We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The primary purpose of any system is to perpetuate itself, regardless of its stated or intended purpose. Frito-Lay isn't in the business of making snack food, it's in the business of making money. Its purpose for making money is so that the Frito-Lay Corporation will grow and prosper.
Why would you expect the people who work for the government to be any different than the people who work for Frito-Lay? Is government some sort of priestly calling where only the most pious and righteous go to work? Is having your paycheck signed by the government some magical ritual that bestows honor and selfless altruism upon you? Does the government have some sort of magical screening machine that allows it to hire only the most pure-hearted and noble-spirited? I don't think so, I think the people who work for the government are just as dedicated to seeing government grow and prosper as the people who work for Frito-Lay are dedicated to seeing Frito-Lay grow and prosper. And if along the way you gotta convince a lot of people to swallow a lot of garbage that's not healthy for them, well, Frito-Lay does the same thing, doesn't it?
