Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"The Fable of Edward Snowden"
A pardon for Snowden who is currently in Russia? How would the US government possibly justify that in light of the current spat with that country over hacking? Probably because the Russian 'hacking' is mostly in the minds of Obama and Hillary. There's plenty of reason to be skeptical, including the fact that the techniques were far from 'nation state' grade and much more typical of joyriders.
Hillary took millions in German taxpayer money during election.
"Between July and September 2016, unwitting German taxpayers gave as much as $5 million to the Clinton Foundation, Germany newspaper Die Welt reveals." http://legalinsurrection.com/2016/11/clinton-foundation-received-millions-from-merkel-government/ Why haven't sanctions been imposed on Germany and their diplomats expelled from the country for trying to influence the election?? But it's my understanding that hacking is really, really, really bad, especially if the Russians are involved in any way, and if you don't agree the terrorists win. Also, there's no such thing as voter fraud except that the Russians hacked the election without affecting vote tallies in any way except mind control from hacking Podesta's emails about manipulating the election for Clinton, so shut up.
"From A German: Americans Are Too Timid In Confronting Hate"
Oh sure, the Germans are really tough on haters. As long as it involves the odd hopeless neo-Nazi skinhead and not "immigrant" men of a certain religious persuasion. Hate is defined by the activists and politicians. In Germany German citizens have gone to jail and paid fines for simply disagreeing with the policy of taking in refugees and various border crossers. Often the determination of what is hate is made without notice or logic and you can be ostracized for something you said years to decades ago which in the context of the times wasn't hate or considered hate. Today we can't say the N word we can't write it and we even look suspect when we refer to it as the "N" word. But anyone can say the H word; honky and any college professor can call for white genocide. White people today are called names and threatened for something some anonymous (maybe) white person did over a century ago to some anonymous (maybe) black people long ago. 100's of thousands of recent immigrants of color automatically qualify for free stuff simply based on their race and the assumption that they are the product of discrimination and taxpaying American citizens who have done no wrong must pay for their free stuff, give up going to college or having a job so that the immigrant can be awarded those things for free. We are maybe two baby steps away from our government taking our homes to give to the near do wells and complainers. Why? Because someone, not you, gets to decide what 'hate is and can legislate against you because of it.
Re: Showers
Buy Euro plumbing fixtures and pull out the restrictors when installing. I have an excellent shower. I have a great kitchen faucet. It will blast food scum off of plates. Toilets are a bit of problem. The best solution I've found is to buy Japanese. It is amusing to think that any of these regulations conserve water. You flush twice or more. Women need longer to get the soap out of their hair. You run the dishwasher twice. It goes on and on... And I read somewhere recently that residential water use is only 2% of the total. I can't help but think that Brazil , the country where the Electric Shower Head was invented, might not be the best example for the virtues of government non-interference in the setup of your bathroom plumbing.
I have washed loads of clothes twice because they aren't coming clean in the current front loading machine I have.
Another myth demolished, finally: Feds preparing to drop warnings on cholesterol
Dietary cholesterol has minimal to no medical significance. Expect no apologies for messing up so many people's food habits for decades. And yet Thinker's rightists get all sideways somehow turning this: The greater danger in this regard, these experts believe, lies not in products such as eggs, shrimp or lobster, which are high in cholesterol, but in too many servings of foods heavy with saturated fats, such as fatty meats, whole milk, and butter. ...into this: So for the last 66 years, we have been acting on alarmism that turned out to lack a full scientific basis. I'm so old I remember last month when rightists were lauding Leviathan's advice that fatty meats, whole milk, and butter were health foods. Lauding it the rightists' logical matrix that there are no health foods. Isn't it great when occasionally Leviathan confirms bias? It's like being totally validated by Michelle or something - definitely take it when you can get it, even if it needs a nice redefining first. What's really going on? There's a wealth of data out there. Rightist has no meaning in American politics. It's a made-up term. It's a more nonsense term than referring to socialists as liberals.
That's the point. Rightists are unthought partisans without a known ideology. They're cultural signalers, lemmings, lifestylers, and typically as great a set of statists as the leftists.
When the left is psychotic rightists are just dumb. But kinda proudly so because their greatest talent is reaction. That's how they blew an entire country out of intellectual and political sloth. Trump himself may not be viewed by some as having a 'mandate,' but it cannot be denied that the American people gave the Republicans both Houses of Congress and the Presidency. That is no accident.
But Trump does have a "mandate". No one would argue that Trump was elected to continue the status quo. So that is a mandate. If he is successful in his efforts to make America great again, he will be deemed as having met his mandate.
What the Obamaites fear is what Trump has already shown himself capable and willing to do, improve job prospects and overcome the "New Normal" the economists ginned up as cover for the current economic policy failures. "The Culture: Apparently, no issue was too trivial for the administrative state and its armies of bureaucrats. It was not just a hint and a nudge. It was an imposition."
QUOTE: But in fact what the Progressives advocated and ultimately succeeded in obtaining, through their activism and through their intellectual persuasion, was what they called the Administration or the Regulatory State. Which was a new beast in American economic and political life. The Administrative State surveils economic life. It investigates economic life, gathering data. It regulates economic life. And it performs all the functions, the Progressives argued, in a kind of scientific way. It's well to remember that a big part of the Progressive Movement was of course about political reform as well as about economic reform. American politics in the Gilded Age was notoriously venal and corrupt and dominated by parties. So, the Progressives not only wanted to expand government--they wanted to change government altogether. So, the Administrative State serves a very interesting and crucial role in the evolution of government economy relations. QUOTE: ... social science experts gave elitism a new form and rationale in the Progressive Era, one expanded on by Irving Fisher. The United States had abandoned laissez-faire, Fisher said, out of recognition that "the world consisted of two classes--the educated and the ignorant--and it is essential for progress that the former should be allowed to dominate the latter." --Thomas Leonard 'Race, Eugenics, and Illiberal Reformers' Russ Roberts commenting on the above quote from the book QUOTE: How much do you attribute simply to the economists' desire to have more power? So, there are many, many quotes in the book from economists justifying an expanded role for the state. But it's an expanded role for themselves. So, it's a kind of awkward form of public intellectualism. And it remains so to me to this day. Americans hated Germans in WWII????
Sorry, you fucking idiot, they did not. They hated Naziism. They were substantially German themselves. Did you think "Eisenhower" was a Chinese name? Jesus H. Christ. As a Canadian son of German immigrants who suffered through American bombing of Germany (Paderborn, 1945), American occupation afterwards, I can assure you that Americans were the kindest most courteous, most loving and charitable people on the fucking planet, and don't' you fucking forget it.
