We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Just imagine if Cuba were to put a democratic government in place, a fair legal system and seek investors who would want to build hotels, casinos and entertainment venues. Cuba could become the Hawaii of the Caribbean with tens of thousands of vacationers, millions of dollars and decent jobs for all Cubans. It's potential is huge.
Do apologists look foolish? Do twenty-somethings rise in the morning to say to themselves, "Wow, that Lillian Hellman, what a fool for defending Stalin!" Or "Ugh. When I think of all the defenders of the Rosenbergs and Hiss, I wonder how such fools are made?" Perhaps my social circle is too restricted.
