Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: Thomas Sowell: What The U.S. Can Learn From Sweden's Immigration Experience ... A hundred years ago, when a very different mix of immigrants were coming to a very different America, there was a huge, multi-volume study of how immigrants from different countries had fared here. The Dillingham Commission study concluded that immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe posed a threat to the U.S. and should be restricted, countries such as Italy, Greece, Poland, and Russia; and that immigration from Asia should be halted altogether. Those people will never be "real Americans". "The Dillingham Commission study concluded that immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe posed a threat to the U.S. and should be restricted, countries such as Italy, Greece, Poland, and Russia;..."
The wanted to c ome here and become Americans. The Muslims want to live here, but not, it seems, to become Americans. Sam L: The wanted to c ome here and become Americans.
We didn't provide the citation. We just read it. The Dillingham Commission claimed that people from Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Asia couldn't be assimilated. It's the same story being told today. “My culture is a very dominant culture, and it’s imposing and it’s causing problems. If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.” — Marco Gutierrez, founder of Latinos for Trump And in case you don't get the point, Columbus Day, Haredi Jews, Chinatown, and even taco trucks (on every corner!), are part of what makes up American culture.
So your reasoning is we were wrong about those over 100 years ago, so we must be wrong now. There are a lot of weaknesses, but as usual, the insult how ignorant the rest of us are is enough for you.
We did eventually assimilate those groups, but you will note that wasn't easy or straightforward. Cosa Nostra remained a very big issue for decades after that - Still something of an issue even now, though it is less connected to the Italian-American mainstream now. Cities had Chinatown's because people weren't that welcoming elsewhere (though there was some self-choice on their part as well). That may mean that we are prejudiced, but that is the human reality, not just the American reality, and it is hard to unlearn. Americans have actually learned to do it better than anyone else, except maybe Canadians. Even that assimilation was in the context of immigration being drastically reduced 1927-1964. Call it whatever you want. I contend that neither assimilation nor Civil Rights would have occurred without it. Further, when people do not divide along the usual racial and ethnic lines, they just go underground and find different ways of setting themselves apart. Liberals are divisive along class and cultural lines, for example. I'm sure if we just sing "Imagine" enough times all will be well. Assistant Village Idiot: So your reasoning is we were wrong about those over 100 years ago, so we must be wrong now.
It's not our reasoning, but Sowell's. Here it is again: QUOTE: A hundred years ago, when a very different mix of immigrants were coming to a very different America, there was a huge, multi-volume study of how immigrants from different countries had fared here. This included how they did as workers in various industries and in agriculture, and how their children did in school. But the study was wrong claiming that people from Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Asia couldn't become part of the American culture, indeed, were undermining American culture. They didn't know English, lived in segregated enclaves, and held to their ancient traditions. But they did become part of the fabric of American society, both by adopting American culture, and by changing American culture. Columbus Day, Haredi Jews, Chinatown, and taco trucks are America! The founder of Latinos for Trump promises a taco truck on every corner! — if Clinton is elected. "People who came here a hundred years ago usually did so in order to fit within the framework of America and become Americans. Some still do. But many come from a very different cultural background -- and our own multiculturalism dogmas and grievance industry work to keep them foreign and resentful of Americans who have achieved more than they have.
"Some immigrant groups seek to bring to America the very cultures whose failures led them to flee to this country. Not all individual immigrants and not all immigrant groups. But too many Americans have become so gullible that they are afraid to even get the facts about which immigrants have done well and improved America, and which have become a burden that can drag us all down." Sowell is a senior fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. "The trend in political and social thinking known as Progressivism contributed to concerns over immigration, because many Progressives believed that solving social problems such as alcoholism, poverty, urban slums, and poor education required improving the human stock of the United States, and they saw continuing immigration as contributing to civic decay. Creating a culturally more unified nation was part of the Progressive ideology. Some political leaders argued that immigrants were flooding into the country in such great numbers that the newcomers could not be assimilated. Progressives also believed that social problems could be solved by the careful scientific analysis of experts. "The desire to bring immigration under control led the U.S. Congress to pass the Immigration Act of 1907." http://www.immigrationtounitedstates.org/462-dillingham-commission.html "People who came here a hundred years ago usually did so in order to fit within the framework of America and become Americans. Some still do. But many come from a very different cultural background ... Some immigrant groups seek to bring to America the very cultures whose failures led them to flee to this country. "
That could have just as easily been written in 1911 by the Dillingham Commission. Those Scots and Germans, they're okay. But those swarthy Italians and Jews, well, they'll never be real Americans. All of those immigrants did change the culture and bringing in even more varied cultures will change it even more. LBJ's great society programs and Obamacare are a result and now a demand for sharia law. Multiculturalism kills...just ask the muslims.
indyjonesouthere: LBJ's great society programs and Obamacare are a result
The U.S. foreign-born population was at a low point during the 1960s and 1970s, about 5% of the overall population. The Great Society, Vietnam, and the passage of the Civil Rights Acts were the product of the WWII generation. LBJ's programs were put in place to buy more votes and the change in the 60's immigration laws were put in place to attract more foreign cultures (largely Mexican) that were needed to keep the democratic/progressive/socialist/communists in power by securing votes with MORE free stuff. California is the outcome of free stuff and open immigration and illegal immigration culture. Now add muslims and the demand for more free stuff and sharia.

• California’s GDP was $2.5 trillion in 2015, up 4.1 percent from a year earlier. • California has the third highest median income by state in the U.S. • As a country, California would have the 5th largest GDP in the world, above France.

And that is all going to sustain the "free grazers" and the calpers retirement scam. Having worked there I am quite familiar with the crime and illegals ransacking anything not being guarded 24/7. If you like gated communities you will love California...segregation by billfold. Also in the top 3 for worst state to retire. Even my uncles family who have been there since the end of WWII have left the state and now reside in the south. The culture of the southern half now resembles central America...not north America. But is is sustained by north American taxpayers. Maybe add some Somalis for more diversity and sharia culture?

In fact, California is a net payer to the federal government, while southern states are net recipients of the federal government.

Military and government spending in California both as research and as military reservations returns that and more back to the state. Their university system lives off government grants. The southern states have more than their fair share of freegrazers that show up on the welfare rolls and the pubic school test scores. Check Atlanta's fiasco in the education test score fixing collapse. There is not a single city in this country that, once overrun by culture enrichers", can maintain civilization. They all begin to look like Flint, Detroit or any number of California cities that look like a Tijuana slum. It's the culture and recent immigrants have been dragging their culture here. Compton is just a second rate culture replacing a third rate culture.

You keep shifting your position without acknowledging that you have done so.
indyjonesouthere: LBJ's great society programs and Obamacare are a result Foreign-born people at the time made up the smallest percentage of the U.S. population in history. indyjonesouthere: California is the outcome of free stuff and open immigration and illegal immigration culture. The outcome has been economic growth, high median income, and a very large GDP. indyjonesouthere: But is is sustained by north American taxpayers. Actually, it is Californian that helps sustain other, less developed states, such as those in the South. indyjonesouthere: Military and government spending in California both as research and as military reservations returns that and more back to the state. Their university system lives off government grants. So not only is California economically powerful, but it is also crucial for the development of science and technology.

You are talking of first generation immigrants only. Do you actually think third and fourth generation immigrants do not change the culture. Check out the cultural shifts going on in Europe to see how endless, multidecade importation of other cultures destroys your very own culture. Brexit exists for a reason that you simply can not grasp. And you also can not grasp the idea that when defense department and state department budgets can not even be audited that you think you can point to which states benefit or not. It is billions of dollars and only delusional people could make such a claim from your "in fact" posting. Multiculturalism kills...even the Europeans now understand that bringing outside cultures in creates chaos and crime and demands for more welfare. They never did understand why black and Hispanic cultures in the US were a problem but now their large Muslim cultures are "educating" them to the multicultural abyss. California can't even keep up with its calpers problem which is the least of its problems.

Right, because all the problems are because of the Pollacks, Spics, Dagos, and Jews, especially the Jews.

I don't know why a state actor would try to shut down a largish chunk of the net this way. All of it, in conjunction with other nefarious activities, yes. Small probing attacks, yes. But mid-size? I'd think all that would do is put the fear of disruption into people with the authority to harden the infrastructure. Maybe Cisco wants to sell hardware :-) (just kidding, please don't turn off my router) Maybe an extortionist.
My 7th grade science teacher took part in the Hungarian uprising (he had been a medical student) and escaped over the border to Austria. He used to tell us little bits and pieces about it, the thing that sticks with me the most was how he got separated from his brother when escaping and never heard from him again.
God bless those brave Hungarians. They lost and many died. But it showed the world that the Russians were still bloodthirsty and the countries they occupied longed for freedom.
