Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Is There an Epidemic of ADHD?
Remember when kids played outside? Remember when kids were allowed to have jobs? If not "jobs" then did chores? Have you ever seen a kid cutting the lawn or shoveling coal or shoveling snow recently? They can get arrested for that. Remember when kids got on their bikes and disappeared for hours at a time? Now parents are arrested for that. All this talk of paid maternity leave for women employees. When is government meddling and doctor and teaching meddling in parenting going to stop? Most of us grow up and live normal lives and are in most respects "normal". This includes many/most of the children who had disciplinary problems or other social and personality problems. I think for a lot of children the social structure and education model is exactly the opposite of what they need and would thrive in. I believe this is especially true for male children who need more activity and education model based on "doing" and not listening. At the risk of being sexist I see the modern American education system as one designed by women and best suited for girls. Not necessarily intentionally but inevitably because most teachers/educators are and have been women.
Designed for proper young ladies, not girls. I've know quite a few girls who would not fit in the modern school environment, at least not until they had been broken and put on the path to being a proper young woman.
The schools today are of late 19th, early 20th century upper middle class finishing schools that produced proper young women ready to take their place in society. "At the risk of being sexist "
I guess that makes me sexist too, I agree with you. Boys and girls are not the same. And trying to make boys not be boys, (discouraging masculine, aggressive behavior) is what most of that ADHD medicating is about. I have one kid left in school - HS. She said they are disciplining teachers for speaking out against things they don't like (things that don't work) as well as being very harsh with the dress code and things such as carrying backpacks in school. (under some stupid weapon excuse). There has never been a problem. This is a rural area where probably 15 yrs ago, kids brought their rifles to school in order to hunt before and after school. They are pushing and punishing everyone for something that some kid somewhere else did. This is how kids revolt. They are creating problems. We have a matriarchial society now. Not an honor based, patriarchal society. And it sucks. Paid maternity leave taken out of the unemployment insurance companies already pay into. Genius.
Women in hourly wage jobs are unfairly penalized for having babies. We should be encouraging women to take time to heal after having a baby. This is a very family-friendly idea. I would rather have a business give paid maternity leave than for that woman to lose her job and go on welfare. MY state's UC news already states that over 11% of UC payments are fraudulent. Yet my rates go up every year even though I have never had anyone receive payments under my account.
They will raise the cost of paying maternity leave to all businesses regardless of whether they employ females of child bearing age or not, driving the cost of employing someone even higher. No one will hire a woman. Guess you didn't read the part of the policy where they would target waste and abuse? Revenue neutral.
I do not want women forced to quit a job to have a baby. Nor do I want that woman in the emergency room with complications b/c she had to go back to work a week after giving birth in order to pay her bills. Do you? It's not revenue neutral, sorry.
If there is waste and abuse in the system, that's something th

I don't base my political ideas and supports on how they affect one person or one part of society.

What about getting a husband? This also ties into the ADHD article.
Maternity (or Paternity, since you know that'll be coming, too) may work for some, but if new mom is not just a replaceable cog in the machine it might not work too well. Not everyone in the workplace can be temp replaced by giving a person a day or two of OJT.
Missing a key person for an extended period can really mess up workflow and results. Temp hiring is not a valid method of replacing a key person when the position needs specific experience or or position-unique knowledge. Maybe some hybrid of work-at-home along with convalescent leave would be a solution for folks like that? Re: Fall waterfowl
I've about come to the conclusion that the waterfowl population numbers are inversely proportional to the harshness of the winters. Whenever "record numbers" are forecast, the winters are mild north of us, resulting in empty skies. Voting

How Did “Vincenzo” Become “James?”
Common for other nationalities as well. My grandparents came from Finland and Americanized their children...one uncle's name was Toivo but he was always called Jimmy. When he died at age 97 and his obituary was in the local (small town =100 people) paper as Toivo, no one knew who it was. Newest approval rating on RCP is tied. 48 approve/48 disapprove. Only a few days ago, Obama was up over 10 points in approval ratings. I sense a downward trajectory now that he is on the campaign trail.
An example of the above: Greenwich Is the Worst U.S. Housing Market, Sternlicht Says
IOW, more wealthy residents are leaving Greenwich CT than are moving to Greenwich CT. Result: lower housing prices. Spin that , Z-Team. You Know What’s More Important Than Hillary’s Health? Climate Change!!!!!!
Initial claims on Sunday implicated Climate Change in the attack on Hillary, via overheating and dehydration. This only ended when no one in their right mind could say it was not the most genial of days even hours after the collapse in the heat of the day. Columbia U. conservatives’ horror stories: Threatened, bullied, censored.
Times have changed. When I was in college, though I was on the left, I made a point of finding out what my political opponents were up to, by reading National Review and Commentary in addition to lefty stalwarts like The Nation and The New Republic. I was surprised one day to read a letter to the editor in National Review written by the brother of a high school classmate. He wrote that while his conservative views were in the minority at Columbia, he received civil treatment from his leftist/liberal/progressive classmates. That letter would not be written today, it appears. I found out that he picked up his conservative views from his parents. He was Jewish. His parents had fled Austria after the Nazi takeover but before the beginning of WW2. Why would a refugee from Hitler be a conservative, I asked myself. Before Hitler, while the lives of Jewish citizens of Germany or Austria were not free of racial or religious prejudice, their lives were fairly comfortable. Hitler took over saying that he would change everything. And change he did. Which helps explain why Jewish refugees from Hitler could be conservative in their politics. THE METRO NORTH BAR CAR - in late August one year in the late 1980s, the trains were losing power due to high residential demand for A/C on sweltering days. For several days in one week we sat on the tracks for over an hour with no power and no A/C. After a day or so of this, a couple of professional traders bought all of the beer at the bar during the next power outage and sold it to patrons for twice their cost. People weren't happy but the traders made a few bucks. The next night we lost power again and the traders bought up all of the beer again - about 100 cans - only to find that power was restored in 10 minutes. The bartender refused to buy back the cans so these clever guys were stuck with 100 cans of beer and no buyers.
This is very cool.
SPITFIRE P9374 The remarkable story of the discovery and reconstruction of a Supermarine Spitfire http://www.christies.com/spitfire/interactive/index.html My problem with paid maternity leave and with all of the mandated benefits is who pays. An employer shouldn't be mandated to give time off or to pay for that time off. And the taxpayer shouldn't have to pay for it or pay for child care either. The federal government should not be in the business of telling employers who they should hire or fire and what the benefits and wages should be.
I can see a compromise. That is anyone who wishes to have a baby and get paid or unpaid leave could save up their vacation time to be used for this purpose. If they do not have vacation time they could "borrow" the time to be made up in the future by giving up that vacation time. And in the event they left the company before they paid back that "baby" time they would owe their employer the cost of the paid or unpaid leave. I do have a question for those who favor benefits for childbirth and childcare. How should the rest of the employees be compensated for not getting those benefits? If the company gives an employee a week or two weeks of paid leave to have a baby what do the rest of the employees get? To be fair everyone should get that same paid time off. This is going to open floodgates of entitlement.
I just adopted a baby. I deserve 8 weeks off. I just got a dog. I deserve 8 weeks off. I am single, but why don't I get 8 weeks paid leave off? Oh wait. This is already happening. I agree with you. Govt regulates every transaction between employer and employee. There is NO incentive to be self employed or hire anyone. You'll know if Clinton lost the debate if the lead story in the MSM is how he bullied her. Or if she makes a major gaffe and the story is about how the GOP is taking advantage of it rather than the gaffe itself.
