Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

This will not go over well with the common folk. Angela Merkel warns other countries should be stopped from leaving Sheesh. This is insane or maybe evil. Brits got it right, dodged the bullets.

"Angela Merkel warns other countries should be stopped from leaving..."
How, and with what means, pray tell? Wow, no self doubt there. If these reports are true, they have a lot of confidence in their power, unless it is bluster.
If you have to be forced to stay in, it's probably worth getting out.
That was my first reaction before reading the articles.
From the first link: QUOTE: The foreign ministers of France and Germany are due to reveal a blueprint to effectively do away with individual member states in what is being described as an “ultimatum”. Under the radical proposals EU countries will lose the right to have their own army, criminal law, taxation system or central bank, with all those powers being transferred to Brussels. This sounds much worse than I expected. If the description of the "blueprint" is accurate - ie. it is an ultimatum - this will not end well. As if the world needed to get scarier. See if this sounds a lot like the "plan" for the EU, as well as for the US after the New Deal
QUOTE: Many advocates of interventionism are bewildered when one tells them that in recommending interventionism they themselves are fostering anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies and the establishment of totalitarian socialism. They protest that they are sincere believers and opposed to tyranny and socialism. What they aim at is only the improvement of the conditions of the poor. They say that they are driven by considerations of social justice, and favour a fairer distribution of income precisely because they are intent upon preserving capitalism and its political corollary or superstructure, viz., democratic government. What these people fail to realize is that the various measures they suggest are not capable of bringing about the beneficial results aimed at. On the contrary they produce a state of affairs which from the point of view of their advocates is worse than the previous state which they were designed to alter. If the government, faced with this failure of its first intervention, is not prepared to undo its interference with the market and to return to a free economy, it must add to its first measure more and more regulations and restrictions. Proceeding step by step on this way it finally reaches a point in which all economic freedom of individuals has disappeared. Then socialism of the German pattern, the Zwangswirtschaft of the Nazis, emerges. von Mises, Ludwig (1947). Planned Chaos (LvMI) (Kindle Locations 132-141). Ludwig von Mises Institute. Kindle Edition. *Zwangswirtschaft (German) is an economic system entirely subject to government control. "Zwang" means compulsion, "Wirtschaft" means economy. The English language equivalent for Zwangswirtschaft is something like compulsory economy Peter Turchin didn't expect Brexit to pass but he did see it as the start of the start of the disintegrative phase for the EU, unless something changes and doubling down doesn't seem like the change needed.
QUOTE: But there are also internal causes. The structural-demographic theory points to two fundamental causes of imperial failure: popular immiseration and elite overproduction. I haven’t studied as thoroughly the situation in Germany as in the United States, but it definitely looks like Germany is following the American trajectory, although with a time lag. Why focus on Germany? Because in many ways the European Union was a German empire. Or, at the very least, a collaboration between the German economic elites and the French political elites. Now this cooperation is unravelling, and the place to watch is, I think, Germany. Everybody talks about how Germany managed to keep low unemployment and sustain economic growth, unlike the rest of Europe. The reforms under the Gerhard Schroeder government are credited for this “success.” But the success is a hollow one. Schroeder broke the social contract on which the modern Germany was founded: the cooperation between the Workers’ Unions and the corporate managers. As a result, we have the paradoxical situation in which the unemployment rate is low, while the proportion of Germans below the poverty line is growing rapidly. QUOTE: Apparently, the fact that the majority of the British people voted to leave the EU just days ago isn’t good enough – leftists want to keep having referendums until they win. Senior figures within the political establishment then began to push the idea of forcing Brits to vote again, including former Tony Blair advisor Jonathan Powell, who told BBC Newsnight, “Remember, the Irish have done that twice this century – they voted against the treaty, had a second vote, and voted for it.” Blair himself then entertained the idea of another referendum, telling the BBC’s Sunday Politics show that it couldn’t be ruled out. Labour MP David Lammy followed suit, urging his fellow regressive leftists to stop the “madness” of democracy by demanding a second referendum. The political class will try every dirty, underhanded trick in the book to sabotage the Brexit vote and annul the democratic decision of the British people, including the demand that Brits vote again on Brexit after a general election. Pro-globalist Conservative Party members will also try and delay the triggering of article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which will officially begin the process of Britain leaving the EU. It is imperative that we continue to hold their feet to the fire – including Vote Leave leaders like Boris Johnson and Michael Gove – to ensure that this populist revolt isn’t hijacked by the political elite and that the Brexit vote actually leads to Britain’s withdrawal from the EU. http://www.infowars.com/globalist-plot-to-sabotage-brexit-kicks-into-high-gear/ Seriously? Don't you guys ever get tired of echoing the echo?
JJM: How, and with what means, pray tell? The question can lead you to wisdom. The EU will prevent disintegration by the sound of one hand clapping.
Given the news today that the EU is no longer letting any other countries leave and the existing ones have to give up their sovereignty and become one country. Germany and France are in it together. the German President said the problem is not the elites but the people (peasants). Have the french not learned anything from the french revolution and the germans from two world wars that they started? Are europeans stupid or what? The eastern europe nationalities just got their independence from the soviets so they are not likely to take this lightly. Do liberals ever think thru people's motivations before pronouncing solutions to non-existent problems?
It is almost as if we are again living thru the run up to WWI when the stupidity of the ruling classes drove europe into war. The parallels are becoming too close. there are similar rumblings out of China, Japan, and Russia as there were 100 years ago. there is a ruling class again in europe. The USA is fractured with europhiles and europhobes, world trade and world banking is necessary for national survival. Turkey is reverting to islam and wants to rule the middle east. Iran, Iraq and Egypt have undercurrents against their rulers who want to project their power. the Pax Americana is unraveling and the forces of evil, and destruction are being loosed. |
