Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, June 17. 2016Guns againKnives are the tool used in 5 times more killings in the US than guns. Admittedly, though, a firearm can kill more people at a time, making for scary headlines. Omitting 9-11 from the stats, however, the number of mass murders in the US has been on a multi-decade decline. There is an argument that there are too many It is a very rare bad guy who uses a long gun. Too hard to conceal. Mass murderers sometimes prefer long guns because they are more accurate than handguns. With the exception of Switzerland where firearm ownership is close to required by law, most governments want their citizens disarmed. Disarmed citizens are more helpless citizens. Most of these governments want their police and government agencies well-armed. Why? Because bad guys have firearms even in disarmed places. New Flash: bad guys ignore laws. Police have weapons because bad guys have them, illegally. They were not purchased in gun shops. You can't keep guns away from bad guys and the occasional lunatic. Impossible. Thus governments try to limit guns going to good guys. Pointless, but good politics in some places. Essentially all legal firearm sales in the US are for sport and recreation, self-defense, and for collectors. The extremely rare violent exceptions are Muslims and the mentally disturbed. Firearms are as American as apple pie, and as common. The average American is quite comfortable with a firearm. Many if not most American boys and girls learn to use them. They all should. My parents taught us. The 2nd amendment is not there because of militias so much as because weapons were forbidden for the common man in England. Only aristocrats could own their own swords and firearms. Same as in the UK now. If by some miracle firearms could be kept from jihadists in the US, they would simply make bombs. "Assault-looking" rifles? These are just light-weight rifles that look mean. Best-selling rifle in the US today. True assault weapons are illegal in the US except for government agents and the military. Even IRS agents have an arsenal of assault weapons. Isn't that nice? I think all of the politicizing of the Orlando jihadist's firearms is virtue posing and grandstanding. BTW, I am in favor of vetting all gun buyers, all knife-buyers, and all immigrants from anywhere. Did you know that it is easier for an illegal immigrant in California to stay and to get government freebies than it is to legally-import a hunting dog from England? I also think anyone using violence or threat of violence whether with firearm, knife, baseball bat, or anything else in commitment of a crime deserves execution. Not tolerable in civilization. Photo: Good self-defense handgun, the Taurus Judge which fires .45 and .410 shotshells. Popular with judges. With a .45, it takes training to hit anything, but the .410 makes it easy. Best home defense firearm? A pump 12 ga.: Just the sound of the pump action will send any bad guy running for the hills unless they are crazed rural meth-heads. Home defense is like buying insurance. You hope you never need it. re I am in favor of vetting all gun buyers,
Disagree 100%. We have a right to bear arms, PERIOD. End of discussion. There are no strings attached. They can't take away your right if you fail to (Fill in the blank), get training, register, permits, appear on a list of undesirables, pay a tax . . none of it. The Constitution adds no caveats that disqualify the right. Anyhow. "Vetting" a gun buyer amounts to defacto registration. Once they know you bought the weapon, they know whose door to kick in at 3 a.m. to get it back. Even for potential jihadists?
Even for illegal immigrants? Even for violent felons? Yes. The founders' chose liberty over security. No law is perfect.
Violent felons will get guns whether they have a right to them or not. Ditto for jihadists. See Europe. no constitutional right is absolute. period. you many have fantasies about unrestricted rights, but just like you can't shout "fire" in a theater, your gun rights are subject to reasonable restrictions that fulfill a compelling state interest. your personal opinion of what the second amendment guarantees is wrong.
so you can't own a stinger missile and the right to own machine guns is severely limited. this also means that little barry isn't coming for your AR-15 anytime soon no matter how wet a gun grabbing dream he has. I realize that the NICS check is pretty ridiculous on its face. Criminals generally do not buy their guns from a gun shop and the only people who are inconvenienced are the law abiding. At the same time, I don't mind the hassle because it is at least an attempt to have a system that, on its face, does not permit criminals to have "simple" access to guns. I know this is contradictory.
However, violent felons and non citizens have no right to possess a gun in my view. Felons lost their right when they committed a felony just like thy lost the right to vote. Non citizens are under the jurisdiction of another country. It's not about guns, it's about CONTROL.
re: 'Just the sound of the pump action will send any bad guy running for the hills unless they are crazed rural meth-heads.'-also let's the more intelligent perp know exactly where you are, just saying. "True assault weapons are illegal in the US except for government agents and the military."
Not true. You do need state and Fed permission to own one though. Knives are the tool used in 5 times more killings in the US than guns.
NOT TRUE. FBI: Murder Victims by Weapon, 2006–2010. Partial list: QUOTE: Total 70,975 Total Firearms 47,856 Handguns 34,544 Knives or cutting instruments 9,075 Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) 4,147 Those are the facts, according to the FBI. So much for Howard Stern, it would appear. Admittedly, there are too many illegal handguns in the US. You can buy an illegal handgun on the right ghetto street corner in any American city in 15 minutes if you have the cash. Illegally-obtained handguns are the firearm of choice for criminals.
From what I have read over the years, Stop-and-Frisk has been fairly successful at confiscating illegal guns. Progs want illegal guns off the street. So why are Progs against a practice that is fairly successful at getting illegal guns off the street? Weigh the benefit of getting illegal guns off the street versus the inconvenience of people being stopped and frisked- most of whom are law-abiding. The average American is quite comfortable with a firearm. Many if not most American boys and girls learn to use them. They all should. My parents taught us. I am not comfortable with firearms, in spite of being raised in a household with about a dozen rifles or shotguns & a couple of handguns, and plenty of target practice growing up. A friend of mine got killed in a gun accident with his elder brother. Thus my discomfort. When I was a hippie dropout activist in Bersekeley, a thug put a gun to my temple in the kitchen of the house where I was living. As a result, my reaction to "If guns are outlawed only criminals will have guns," is to nod my head in agreement. I was mugged by a thug with a handgun in NYC in the 1970s.
The Knives 5x more likely statistic is true for 2014 compared to long gun murders. This is apparently the statistic that has bounced around (see here for example) and subsequently been misquoted. The FBI stats are right there for the link you posted. In 2013 there were 285 murders attributed to rifle use, whereas 1,490 attributed to cutting weapons. That works out to a 1:5.23 ratio.
I also think anyone using violence or threat of violence whether with firearm, knife, baseball bat, or anything else in commitment of a crime deserves execution. Not tolerable in civilization.
This should also apply to government employees, such as tax collectors. Oopsie! Government is fundamentally slavery. I'm in favor of mandatory safety courses for first time owners and an expanded background check. ownership or possession barred to anyone convicted of any crime of violence, including domestic violence without any LEO waivers.
QUOTE: but the .410 makes it easy. a .410 fired from a short barrelled pistol doesn't meet the FBI Ballistic Test Protocol and isn't a good self defense choice. a Glock 17 is probably your best self-defense pistol; a pump 12 gauge shotgun with No. 4 buck probably the best self defense weapon. The background checks to buy guns would "seem" to make sense. But they don't work so why do we continue them? The simple answer is that they were never about making sure only citizens in good standing bought guns. Instead they are a backdoor way to gun registration. When the background checks were first implemented the promise was that the information would be used ONLY to determine eligibility to buy the gun and then the data would be discarded. Do you really believe our government hit the delete button on all those records of honest law abiding gun buyers?
"...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." That means not infringed by congress, the president, the courts, the states, the counties and the cities. Not by the FBI, the ATF, the sheriffs, the police or the state police. It doesn't mean a little infringement is OK or a lot of infringement if state legislators pass it is OK it means they cannot legally and constitutionally infringe on our right to keep and bear arms. Not in California, not in New York and not in New Jersey. What two rights of the American People under the most intense assault from Democrats:
"On the other hand, the right to bear arms is inherent under English ideas, and this alone, with the corresponding right of political assembly, has served largely to maintain English liberty;" --Frederic Jesup Stimson As Professor Robson explains, while historically limited time and group weapon bans have been used they were mostly to humiliate the disfavored group or for bigoted reasons.
This current move by Democrats is to exert power and humiliate Males, Christians, Whites with the trifecta the White Christian Male who lives in the heartland. The 5X statistic refers to knives to "assault rifles."
Handguns murder thousands more than knives. how exactly does a handgun "murder" someone? are they magick on your planet?
