Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Why solar is bad--is nonsense. I am harvesting 95 acres of trees. Does that make me bad?
This article only cleared 11 acres and it will grow back. In regard to commencement speeches, I highly recommend Mitch Daniels'on YouTube. A grown-up talking to grown-ups!
"Charles Murray against Trump"
"There are good reasons to question his fitness to occupy the presidency, because of both his policy positions and for reasons of character." More proof the elite (or as he defines them the "Establishmentarians") don't get it. Trump is somehow unfit but where was he when Obama was running??? Long before Obama ever considered running for president it was clear to everyone paying attention that he was unfit. Was Romney or McCain "fit"? How about Rubio or Jeb? We are close to $20 trillion in debt. More than half of this in the last 7 years thanks to Obama. Does this demonstrate "fitness" to be president? We are doomed to a terrible future facing default/bankruptcy because of this, the piper must be paid. Where were the "establishmentatians" while our "fit" politicians ran up this extraordinary debt? Most of our politicians aren't "fit" to be used car salesmen it is disgusting and self-serving to see them argue they are sooooo much better than Trump. More than likely all of them would be unable to make a living without public jobs. National Review has become a holding cell for self-proclaimed elites having temper tantrums when they realize no one is listening to them anymore.
Murray has pointed out that Establishment Democrat or Republican in the Presidency hasn't mattered in regards to the growth of government or increase in discretionary spending. Of course, Reagan is the exception, but then he wasn't much liked by the Republican Establishment until he proved to do what they hadn't been able to do for decades.
QUOTE: Conservatives who plan to vote for Donald Trump say that Hillary Clinton is so awful that anybody, even Trump, is preferable. Without getting into the comparative defects of Clinton and Trump (disclosure: I’m #NeverTrump), I think it’s useful to remind everyone of the ways in which having a Republican president hasn’t made all that much difference for the last fifty years, with Ronald Reagan as the one exception. Obama was not fit, morally, for reasons that were obscured in the campaigns. Same for Bill Clinton. McCain, Romney, Jeb, Rubio, Cruz, etc all were fit in that sense. They fought fair, they didn't lie about who they were. You can believe they were wrong in their policies or foolish or incompetent or whatever.
You can believe that Trumps's policies - whatever you humorously imagine they are going to be - or his competence or his instincts are better than the other candidates. Fine. But he is not honest and he doesn't fight fair. In that sense he is unfit. Worse than Hillary? No, he at least rises above that standard. Jeb Bush is a nice man I wish he were my uncle or grandfather but certainly not my president. He is unfit because he think unlimited illegal immigration is an act of love and he would do nothing to stop it. Our country cannot survive this invasion and a president who would not stop it and reverse it is unfit.
McCain has held a similar position on illegal immigration. When he last ran for reelection he created ads showing him at the border insisting if he got reelected he would build the wall. After he got reelected he reversed his position on this. I would call that dishonest. Rubio is a nice guy but for historic reasons he considers himself and certainly his family a "Cuban" first and an American second. Because of this he cannot help himself he puts non citizens ahead of citizens and IMHO that is an automatic disqualifier. All of the GOPe are hell bent on moving jobs offshore and spending more money. WHO from the GOP would have been a good candidate/president. I liked Cruz but his own party "Borked" him and then there was no one left but Trump... I suspect you believe I am pro-Trump and that you are anti-Trump and thus that is your issue. I am not "particularly" pro-Trump but I am pragmatic. Like Trump or hate him he is head and shoulders above the other two candidates left in the race. I do not know and cannot know if he will do great things or not. In fact I think the economic and immigration situation is so bad that no one can fix it. We will IMHO fall into a full blown economic depression. Could be next month, next year or two years but soon. It is unavoidable. If this were to happen with Hillary in office she would use the crisis to create a new socialist America. Trump will (hopefully) choose a capitalist solution. He would probably "put America first" and take actions to find and deport illegals. Although this won't prevent a economic depression it will most efficiently pull us out of it. The Keynesian/socialist model the left prefers is economic suicide. Trump is the only pragmatic choice left to us. "Two themes seem to dominate Commencement speeches. One is shameless self-advertising by people in government, or in related organizations supported by the taxpayers or donors, saying how nobler it is to be in "public service" than working in business or other "selfish" activities."
Well, the old working class resisted socialism. But the new working class, those with college degrees and destined for government, non-profits and cubes in corporations seem more amenable to socialism. They certainly aren't going to own the means of production. Not like the old "working class" or the Trades where many are small business owners and even "employees" often own their own tools and basic means of production. Re: Trump Derangement Syndrome
I had a short email conversation with Jeff Jacoby his willingness to vote for a ticket with William Weld as a VP even though all the Libertarian arguments he made while campaigning for governor of Massachusetts were forgotten once he took office. The point I made was that a vote for anybody but Trump was, in effect, a vote for Hillary (or Bernie). Then I realized that that was true for him since Trump was unlikely to be competitive in Massachusetts anyway. But it is true for many of the rest of us. I understand peoples' misgivings about Trump, but not voting is just pouting that you didn't get to vote for a candidate you like. You don't always get to choose between a good and a better candidate, you may not be able to choose between a good and a bad candidate. You may have to choose between a bad and a worse candidate. Those conservative NeverTrumpers need to stop whining and pick the one that can be expected to go the most in the direction they want to go. Even though they don't like the driver, the bus, or the route taken.
Yes. If the choice is between the bus you don't want to be in and the bus you want NOT to be in - it makes no sense to risk being in that latter bus.
Re: Hillary lying through her lying teeth
How could she have so brazenly broken all sorts of rules on handling government documents and just assumed she would get away with it? Well - do you really think that for as long as she was using her own private server, nobody ever noticed? She did get away with it during her time at State, didn't she? You have to doubt what you're seeing when it's that bold - surely she can't be committing a crime that openly, can she? Surely if it were as illegal as it seems somebody would be saying something, wouldn't they? But nope, that's the beauty of the big scam - make it bold enough and people have their doubts about challenging it because they can't believe anybody would try something that obvious unless it wasn't a scam. How could she have so brazenly broken all sorts of rules on handling government documents and just assumed she would get away with it?
----------------------------------------------------------------- Her "team" with a big D on it controls the White House, the Justice Department, and the media. So certainly hubris says she thought she would cruise into office and never have to pay the piper. And frankly, if it weren't for Donald Trump making this and everything else about Bill and Hillary an issue, she probably would. Say what you will about Trump, he has done a big favor to our country by calling out what is going on in a number of ways. The sad thing is we have only scratched the surface. The more disturbing part is how she and Bill could have made tens of millions of dollars in payoffs while engaged in "public service." (Perhaps many times more than that, if it is revealed that the Clinton Foundation was just a way to launder money--perhaps that is why they are now going after McAuliffe as well.) |
