Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Burying alive your own. How does that work as a recruitment tool?
Ah well, Darwin and all. "Nobody know what healthy is. It's all fad."
So wrong, on so many levels! There's a ton of dietary research out there that clearly establishes that excess carbs and sugar will cause anyone to gain an unhealthy amount of weight consisting of fat. That is not a fad and was something that was thoroughly researched by German and Austrian scientists in the 1920's and 30's. Unfortunately almost all of their original published research was never translated into English and WWII intervened casting a bad light on much that was German in origin. Since then, its been one governmental or egotistical mad scientist (including MDs) FUBAR after another leading to the current plague of obesity and its resultant disease diabetes! Want to reach and maintain a healthy weight? Each fewer carbs and less sugar, as well as more protein as part of your diet, so your body's metabolism is trained to burn body fat for energy, rather than store it around your belly and elsewhere. The stupid fads consist of believing the government and arrogant Ivy League research types on diet and BMI. QUOTE: Nobody know what healthy is. It's all fad. Not so, but if you ignore all the studies, I suppose it has an element of truth to it. Linguistically. As if denial were truth. There's a ton of dietary research out there... Exactly right ...that clearly establishes that excess carbs and sugar will cause anyone to gain an unhealthy amount of weight. No, that just some conflated nonsense you made up. It establishes that the American carnist/Adkins/nonsense fad can put your impaired system into weight loss at the expense of nutrition unless you also pack it with carbs and sugar at which point the impairment piles on the fat. Yes, that's exactly what it establishes but who cares because rightists think vegans are Satan-worshippers. No? Ask Ed Driscoll. If you don't kill lots of animals like God intended then you have a cow-sized hole in your soul, says Ed Driscoll. And rightists in general. It's almost like they lifted it right from Lewis and Chesterton and Burke and Hayek and whatnot. Just ask them. But faddists being what they are and blogs being blogs, why bother. The point is to reinforce preconceptions and lifestyle signalling, the smart rightist's sole alternative to creeping progressivism. It's all they have left. Nice piece on the skyfaring 747 pilot. Very interesting stuff much of which we landlubbers don't appreciate. On the flip side there were a couple of points that I could relate to even w/ my modest travel experience.
That is a nice piece.
Reminded me of a flying observation I had back in the late 1980s regarding the sparseness of population but the perception by many of humans overcrowding the Earth. I flew out of LaGuardia on a nice clear night. I just so happened I was on the right side of the plane as we flew just off the southern end of Manhattan then down the coast. Nothing but lights, dense lights. Until we crossed Delaware Bay where the solid mass of lights started to break up. After that we veered west on our Southerly track to Atlanta so the lights became even more segregated. So when some jerk from the NE, San Fran or LA starts whining about urban living, population, climate change, I just know that they are being parochial and have no awareness of the wider world. And oddly, if White, they are in the 10.5% of non-Hispanic Whites who live in the top 20 cities in the US. A very parochial view. And 2/3rd of of non-Hispanic Whites live in areas less dense than Des Moines, Iowa. QUOTE: Since 17% of the entire American population lives in the 20 largest cities compared with less than 11% of white Americans, isn’t the implication that the residential profile for nonwhite America is radically different from the one for white America? I would welcome good science based information about food. There isn't any, well... there is a lot, well it claims to be science based. Well... it's really all opinion. Some people claim carbs and sugar cause diabetes but the evidence refutes that. Diabetes is a genetic disease and you either have it or you do not. The confusing part of this is that for many people diabetes does not show significant symptoms often until the person reaches their 20's or 30's so it does indeed 'appear' that they just 'caught' it. So much like the fantasy that vaccines cause autism (because autism shows itself in children about the same time they are of age to get their vaccines) it is assumed that it was your diet that caused your diabetes. never mind that everyone else is eating the same diet somehow YOUR diet caused YOUR diabetes.
Then there is the belief that carbs/sugar cause you to be fat or obese. Well, there is a little truth there. But your weight is also genetic and if carbs will cause you to be fat so will fats and proteins. However IF your genes dictate that you will be thin to normal weight the very same carbs (fats and proteins) will NOT make you fat. Go figure. Is salt bad for you. Well, without it you go into a coma and die but other than that not really UNLESS you have a genetic illness that can lead to early death and THEN cutting back salt will help control the disease. So is it the fault of salt? In fact like it or not we have conducted the world's largest experiment on the foods common to the West. In the U.S. about 330 million people eat this food and except for the minority of people with genetic diseases we flourish on it. Science has spoken now it is simply a matter of understanding what it has said. IMHO all of the food sold in supermarkets today is healthy and spending twice as much for organic or natural or whole foods is plain stupid. As for being overweight; I think it is less about health and more about personal choice. The 'obesity paradox' is that people who are overweight have better health outcomes than people of normal or lower BMI's. On the other hand it seems obvious that people who are obese (the traditionnal measure of obesity where the iindividual weighs 350-500 lbs not the BMI measure of >30) do have more health problems. But obesity is genetic and many of the health problems that come with that obesity are genetic as well. The bottom line is you are free to eat only meat if carbs scare you and you are free to eat vegan if meat scares you. But you are not free to claim that meat or carbs are bad for all of us because the data doesn't support that myth. It is all just food. Everything sold in the supermarkets is simply good food nothing more, nothing less. Eat what you like and don't eat what you don't like. I would welcome good science based information about food.
The hell. Every time it's cited you deny it. Diabetes is a genetic disease and you either have it or you do not. The hell. Diabetes is radically eliminated by reforming the metabolism. The bottom line is you are free to eat only meat if carbs scare you and you are free to eat vegan if meat scares you. You have zero idea and zero inclination toward the bottom line. "The bottom line" is a rhetorical ploy. Diabetes cured.
https://youtu.be/ktQzM2IA-qU You can find a dozen presentations like this from Ted alone. Some even invoke the hallowed Taubes/Adkins/God-fearing rightist-animal-killer ethic, whatever. But the notion that diabetes is genetic might just kill you. Let's see if Windy's vaunted Opinion values your life. Diabetes is different in different people. It can kill you before your 21st birthday or it can require constant medication and it can take your sight and your limbs OR it can be easily "controlled" by diet. It is very unlikely that any of these quacks can "cure" diabetes and I would certainly love to see them try with a diabetic patient about to have his feet amputated. What they do is cherry pick (either intentionally or by chance) those patients with manageable symptoms. And sure enough with the right diet and exercise you can alleviate or even eliminate the symptoms. Are they cured??? Not on your life.
Take any of these patients who were "cured" by TED speakers and feed them the same crap that I eat everyday and their symptoms would return. You either have diabetes or you do not. If you have it and follow your doctors dietary and medical advice you can (usually) live a long and otherwise healthy life. You cannot "cure" it. IMHO it is pure quackery for a medical professional to make these claims. It is dishonest, unprofessional and harms the patients and families of diabetics. As for the whole "pre-diabetes" thing that too is quackery and not supported by science. I suspect some legitimate and well meaning doctors get sucked into the "pre-diabetes" meme because they want to motivate a patient to adopt a more healthy life style. Fine, if that's what it takes to get a patient to lose 100 lbs and stop eating junk food more power to them. BUT that does not mean thinking intelligent people should start acting as though the "pre-diabetes" thingy is real. As I have said before when I ran marathons and half marathons I would bet the lab tests would label me as "pre-diabetic" (whatever that means). I literally ate 20 pancakes with extra syrup and butter the morning before a race and 3 lbs of pasta the night before. My blood sugar would probably scare one of these TED quacks out of his lab coat. Now 45 years later still eating junk food and just about anything I crave I still don't have diabetes. Diabetes is a disease you get from your parents/ancestors NOT from your food. Listen to you; there's literally no end to the convolutions you'll float in order to indulge that weird narrative of yours that even you don't understand.
You know, upthread even B48 takes your nonsense to task. You people need to get together and compare notes more. You want to cure alcoholism? Stop drinking. But oh, say you, there is no cure for alcoholism. We're all recovering alcoholics, say you, and it's just your superior genetics that spare you the ills of merer mortals. We're all cancer riddled until we aren't and we aren't until we are. And even this rank contradiction you can't see. Yes, everyone's evil and unscientific except you. Because you have sources and the others only have ...sources. Being a vegan is better science because it's more moral, and it's more moral because it's better science. You just can't stop mixing categories, can you? It just keeps spilling out, sputtering, because...because...
And listen to you too.
Do you people ever stand back and look at what you write? Here at the 'Farm science is routinely suspect - which it is, as a matter of fact - until Science! is used to smugly bolster any damn fool thing that needs reinforcing. Or in the case of this thread, it's all a fad unless it leads to diabetes unless it's all genetic. That's not me, Idiot, that's the running narrative, snatched from the pages of a medium-right lifestyle blog meandering between the rails of half a dozen assumed realities that are simultaneously Science! and unscientific depending on the day of the week or the confused socio-political assertions therein. Does this need spelling out? Diet has consequences. That's it. It's-all-a-fad and it's-24/7-Adkins and it's-all-genetic are evident, disproved untruths, some more religiously or egotistically projected than others. But on with the messenger-killing.

I love science. I think the scientific method is the gold standard for understanding the unknown. Scientists throughout history have answered the basic questions that our technology and economy is based on. But the fools and knaves use science or pseudo-science for their own end. The natural course of human knowledge is rife with misunderstanding and incomplete proof. This makes it ripe for the hucksters and for the simple ignorant to make their own "science". All of this is made worse by the lack of decent education in the sciences in our K-12 schools. The majority are ripe to be taken in by a good story and a slick presentation. And the intelligent educated elite are not exempt from this tendency to believe in pseudo-science and their influence sustains the frauds and complicates the effort to understand the facts. Perhaps this is just the way it will always be but that does not mean we shouldn't try to correct the record and understand where the facts lead us. There will always be differences of opinions and if someone can prove their case or show significant exceptions to what is understood to be true than these issues can be reevaluated.
My advice to anyone on this is to follow the money. Too many people are sucked in by slick frauds. The entire AGW community is drowning in money from governments and special interests and any scientists/activists who strays from the politically correct agenda is shunned/fired. Why? Because there are billions of dollars in play and the potential for trillions more. Stay skeptical my friend.

...Windy elaborated at some length, employing avoidance and generalities with what seemed a straight face. Even the challenges of scientific rigueur put to him just rolled right off as if they didn't exist. The crowd became more restless.
I love science. He added, excitedly, conflating whim with substance and projection with concrete reality. By now the people laughed quietly among themselves at the transparency of the obvious falsehood. They knew nonsensical marketing when they heard it, remarked some as they headed for the exits.

Some of the photos in the "I Fly 747s" article are a bit odd. The airplane approaching the Houston airport is (by its shadow) a Boeing 737, a much smaller airliner instead of a giant 747. And the airplane whose wing is shown in Photo No. 3 is an Airbus A320 or A321, which is about the same size as a 737. (You can tell by the winglet on the end.) Maybe the writer kept photos from earlier in his career.
re Islamic State Buries Alive Dozens Of Its Own Soldiers To Stem Soaring Defections
Executing deserters has been a policy used by armies since time immemorial to enforce discipline. Nothing new here other than the method of execution. Great work, DeBlasio! I love it when someone does Chick-Fil-A a good turn. Not only do they serve great food, but they have the best service in the business and I LOVE their politics. If I didn't have a full time gig already that I enjoy, I would open a CFA franchise in my hometown.
