Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"Academe is Overrun by Liberals. Here’s Why that Should Disturb You."
You mean besides that that is a complete misuse of the term "liberal"? And we certainly know that the modern academy does not promote a liberal education QUOTE: Liberal education, education that enlarges and disciplines the mind and makes it master of its own powers, irrespective of the particular business or profession one may follow. [1913 Webster] "Britannia, stemmed from a word used by the Celtic tribes translating to ‘Land of the Painted People.’"
The sad thing is, it appears no one in the university's history department or any liberal arts professor rose to make the point of the "painted people" being really owned by the pale white people who hail from today's British Isles. The article on Yiddish, and the associated hyperlinked articles seem to be talking about both the genetics and the language at once. They assert that the genetics point to Northeast Turkey, yet include a statement that the genetics are also Greek and Roman. No percentages, no discussion, no nuthin'. Perhaps that confusion is nailed down in the underlying articles and it all fits nicely, but it's not obvious here. The discussion of the origins of the language, which has indeed long been a controversy, was more interesting, but I also know there have been other sides to this argument. Historical linguists fight about a lot of things. As for customs like breaking wedding glasses and putting stones on graves, such things are unreliable markers, especially among trading peoples.
re Family with stock pond beats EPA in Clean Water Act overreach
Here's the kicker: QUOTE: stock ponds are exempt from the federal law and he had obtained the necessary state and local permits. The EPA is ignoring the law and doing as they damn well please. If you can't afford to lawyer up or find someone to take your case, you are screwed. And that's what they are counting on. And our elected ruling masters have no interest in fixing this problem. The EPA dumped the Gold Mine water into the Animas River on purpose. They are armed and desire to control every drop of water in the US. It will not end until they are gone and there is no EPA.
Great Lakes water levels
The hand wringers are at it again. Don't worry, it is still climate change. The predicted no snow winters turned into big snow winters and, of course, more snow = more water. I'm sure someone is applying for a grant to study the issue. We had a big snow year in Colorado this season (and the mountains are still getting snow as of yesterday) and our rivers and streams will be blown out with run-off for most of the summer...cuts into my fly fishing. Leftism is the one of the most destructive forces against civilization. Is there anything that is more demoralizing, numbing, and soul-destroying than to be told that you have no input into your future - that if you are successful it is because you were just lucky and that if you are a criminal, it is because of the system. Deconstructing this a bit - if the system is the source of success or failure than you can engineer success by engineering the system. If you are successful at engineering the system, does that mean it was only because you were lucky? re Uber
I'm totally cool with requiring Uber to background check their taxi drivers. I wish they'd been able to come to a work around for the ppl that only provide rides a handful of times of year. I believe it was last week, MFer Bulldog had a post up on being tracked on the web, concluding it was worth it because you gained more than you lost.
Wretch at Belmont Club has a post up on surveillance that is quite good. QUOTE: If mass surveillance has destroyed privacy even among elite politicians the vital unasked question is how much of democracy and liberty was destroyed along with it. https://pjmedia.com/richardfernandez/2016/05/10/the-backroom/?singlepage=true Speaking of PJMedia, does anybody know why PJTV is going dark today?

As Hillary's problems get bigger (upcoming Q&A with FBI, plus depositions for Judicial Watch case to be made public) and as the polls start to look worse and worse for her, I expect the inevitable "medical" problem that will force her to give up the nomination to some hand-picked replacement like Biden. Get ready....
Nah..to suck in Bernie voters, you have to go full commie. Lizzy Warren will go on the self righteous warpath and the braindead liberals will whoop it up heap big time.
You mean, Goofy Elizabeth Warren? She's toast with Trump. LOL.
While I think Trump can beat Clinton easily enough, I don't think he will beat Warren.
Basically, Hillary's biggest weakness is that she's Hillary - she's fighting an uphill battle for the general electorate's votes no matter who she's running against. Warren, is already not-Hillary, so she's ahead in that she doesn't have to overcome that level of built-in negatives. She's already wildly popular with the kind of people who are driving Bernie's success and she's not odious to the entrenched political elites, so she can pretty much instantly unify the Democrats. On top of that, she's going to be better at capturing never-trumpers than Bernie or Hillary. The election's not going to turn on her gaming academia's hiring preferences (which are absurd anyway - it's like saying I shouldn't be elected because I don't obey the speed limit; even if it's true, it isn't going to persuade the average voter). File under irony for Leftists.
