We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
France: Riots over proposed increase to 35-hour work week
Ha! The 35-hour work week. This always makes me think of a French Army officer I worked with. He said that when the 35-hour rule was first established, there was a joke making the rounds of the barracks:
"Did you hear that the civil servants are all upset about the new 35-hour work week? They don't think it's fair they'll have to work an extra five hours."
thez man is truly a man of his time, which is about 1955 or so.
germany already has the second largest armed force in Europe, behind the french surrender battalions.
anyway, do you really trust those people?

Better is the enemy of good. I'm guessing the guy who wrote about Mr. Trump's alleged impure business deals was not one of the folks who was forced to train his replacement by a foreign H1B visa holder.
Interesting column that recites the same sad story that is our education system. The same story that fostered the formation of the Department of Education (which has had no effect on the quality of schools or the students' education). The part that was left out was how much we spend to get this poor result. Many of the comments, not surprising since it is an NPR article, focused on teacher pay, etc. Somewhere I read that Chicago public schools teachers average about $100,000/yr and their schools are the worst. Some public schools cost tax payers almost $15,000/yr/student. That's a lot more expensive than many private schools with much worse results.
What's controversial about "I think Islam hates us?" Islam is a cult built upon hate, murder, oppression and lies. It, of course, hates Jews more than the west since the Jews laughed and mocked Mooohumet when he declared himself a prophet of something called allah.
