Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Romney Speech on 2016
"It will help Trump" Exactly Is the GOPe obtuse or are they gaming the voters? I've been saying for 6 months - Hillary got Chris Stevens and the rest killed in Benghazi. She got him killed so she could use her SecState job to sell off U.S/ Foreign Policy then scrub the details of her dirty deals.
You Are Richer Than a 19th Century Billionaire
True, but up until a bit more than 100 years ago, even the middle class with good budgeting could afford servants in their rather large home. Now not so much, university professors hardest hit. Damn graduated income tax. And really, which is better, having every modern convenience or having people to lord over? I'm sure that was said tongue in cheek, but it can't be repeated to often that 99% of the political party elites, choose the latter, every single time. It is no accident that very few of them speak in terms of individual liberty. They don't believe in liberty for us surfs.
JK Brown: ... up until a bit more than 100 years ago, even the middle class with good budgeting could afford servants...
Actually much more recent than that. When I was growing up in the '50s, I knew several kids whose parents employed a maid. Actually, once upon a time we had a functioning social and economic system. A substantial number of families could survive comfortably on the husband's income. The wife could stay at home and help raise the kids. There was enough money to employ a cleaning lady or maid. That in turn provided employment and income for those further down the ladder so they could better themselves and improve their situation.
Under the Socialist Democrat system as it presently works, the cost of living is so high both husband and wife must work. Sometimes more than one job each because no full-time work is available any more because of costs, especially Obamacare, which has made hiring full-time workers cost-prohibitive. Although both husband and wife work, their standard of living is lower than when only the husband worked. Partly this is because it takes almost one full salary to cover paying the total amount of taxes and other exactions taken by the government. However, much is also taken by childcare costs, since the wife can no longer afford to stay home. So the kids now grow up without exposure to their parents, because they have to work all the time and are never home. The maid and cleaning lady are long gone. They, along with their kids, are permanently on the dole. They spend their time collecting welfare and other government benefits, doing drugs or getting drunk, and having children out of wedlock to maximize their government benefits. Those higher up the ladder who would have hired them once upon a time cannot afford to, but are still paying for them indirectly through paying exorbitant taxes to the government (which then takes a healthy cut to satisfy all its hanger-on bureaucrats before redistributing the money to those on the dole). There are no jobs for those in the lower classes, because they have been all exported to other countries because of costs, and because employers can no longer afford to hire them because of Obamacare, government regulation and taxes. Then you have the other parasite government class, which are those who "work" for and owe their allegiance to the government. They push papers all day, siphon money out of the system to pay for their comfort, and administer government make-work programs to make it look like economically the U.S. is not a basket-case. They are also expected to kick back part of their income to the Democrat Party, the government unions, and their bosses in the form of union dues and political contributions, and during election season are expected to spend part of their time campaigning and maintaining the system. There is no safe space from tequila except abstinence. Tequila will get you drunk then lie in wait until you are trying to recover and drink a glass of water, then new drunk.
"wearing sombreros at the same time as they were drinking tequila at the party, " I blame the cultural abandonment of lighting with lampshades. Bring back the incandescent bulbs and avoid this crime. Around the corner from my house is a store front with a cartoon Mexican.
It's a Mexican restaurant owned and operated by Mexicans. Who should get offended and counter offended? The non-Mexicans who are offended should raise hell on behalf of the Mexicans who aren't but should be.
"The predictable effects of marijuana legalization" WTF???
BD, did you even bother to read the article before posting it as , "The predictable effects...."? Obviously not! That article had far more to do with the effects of abandoning an national advertising campaign against using drugs, than anything to do with "legalization of marijuana!" Here's a far more accurate description of what happens when the "Prohibition" mindset is dismissed and reality substituted : http://www.vice.com/read/three-concepts-you-need-to-grasp-if-you-want-to-know-whether-to-legalize-drugs-yes-even-heroin Did you also fail to notice the anti-gun BS slipped into this diatribe? I'm no fan of marijuana, but that article is really off he mark. Unless they are also calling for prohibition to return (alcohol is a major contributor to violent crime), they are being profoundly inconsistent.
Eliminating the profit margins of ardealers, bringing people out of the shadows, as well bringing users out of the shadows of the criminal world is a good thing. "Racism Charges in Bus Incident"
It is interesting that false charges of racism seem to be ten times the actual cases of racism. I chalk this up to the meme that fighting the good fight against racism in the 60's created "heros" that we look up to today. The would be hero's wish for those good old days so they make up stories of racism. No matter the very real harm done to very real people these hero's will not be denied. This has been going on for years and rarely is punished. I am quite happy to see that finally some of these criminals will be punished. Someone commented here recently that the proximate victim of racism isn't the only victim and it's purpose is to scare others into line. So true. That is what these SJW are doing with their false racism and over reaction to innocent events. Their goal is as much to scare off the honest people as it is to elevate their own street creds. re P.C. fatigue: Progressives Suddenly Realize They’ve Created Frankenstein
The entire scenario of the progs eating themselves via political correctness remind me of a 1961 Twilight Zone episode, 'The Mirror.' That episode was about a Castro-like dictator who acquires a magic mirror that allows him to see his future enemies. IIRC, he ends up killing all his allies. Or as Orwell once said, once the party has wiped out its real enemies outside the party it would turn on its imagined enemies inside the party. PC may not be as violent but the pattern is the same. It's the Purer Than Thou game. Garry Keillor knows it and uses it in doing his "Sanctified Brethren" stories.
Moms Ask Man to Leave Seattle Locker Room While Their Swim Team Daughters Are Changing
I would have 'asked' him to leave. With the battery operated cattle prod that rests behind the seat of my truck. Re: Hillary and Libya
This is a good article by the shrink--I would like to add my favorite bumpersticker for this year: DIRTY DIRTY GIRLS = GOVERNMENT Why were nuke plants abandoned? Lefties made them too expensive, as they make everything expensive.
You noticed how he glossed over (didn't mention) all the protesters, the legal battles, the fear mongering -- all coming from the left. Now to be fair, the early designs kind of sucked, and there is that waste problem. Newer designs are better.
Future designs like the Traveling Wave Reactor solve most of those problems, and a few others besides. (The TWR concept goes back to the 50's, but never got serious consideration) Being able to use nuclear waste (depleted uranium) as a fuel source for one. I'm not sure there's anything preventing the prototype of a TWR beyond legal issues, but with Gates money & connections behind it, I'm assuming it's a done deal just waiting to happen. I suspect that there are too many radiophobics in the boomer generation to allow for the development of any nuclear power generation. I have observed my generations willingness to shut down nuclear plants as well as west coast hydrogenation plants. They also wish to close all coal burning plants and I think they are probably a deconstructionist generation trying to find a safe space they find nonthreatening. When you combine those ideals with the current generations in college I am not sure there is much future for this country other than government mandating safe spaces for one and all.
Trump's candidacy is frightening only to those who have never seen a JFK Democrat before.
