Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Trump
if we can get along with eight years of Obama and can be concerned that Hillary will get the nomination I reckon we can live with one, maybe two terms of Trump. Jefferson: “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.” There's no historical evidence for that attribution, and the syntax seems foreign to Jefferson.
For every threat there is an opportunity. Trump is almost universally despised by Republican politicians for his threat but they should be loving him for the opportunity he dropped in their lap.
Not even a year ago I remembered stories of the demise of the Republican party. Trump is turning that around by appealing to the large center of America who has been completely ignored by the left and the right. He is pulling in millions of the silent majority and turning the Republican party into the party of the broad middle class - upper, lower, and center - who believe in America, in hard work, in their families, in a hope for their children's future, and in traditional American values and, importantly, the value of the individual American citizen. Many of these people would have been Kennedy Democrats in the 60's but today's Democratic elite have no use for them. If the Republican establishment would quit worrying about dividing up the pie and instead took this opportunity to grow the pie, they could all benefit. I'm not convinced they want us - meaning the messy middle that's not connected enough to have influence in DC or poor enough to serve as a permanent block of votes they can promise stuff to and never deliver - to have pie at all.
Because it damn sure looks like they're trying HARD to hog it all. he didn't say it. next time, make it a fake quote from Alexander Hamilton, it will seem more plausible.
Why you should doubt the stream of breathless news of cosmological discovery*: Virtually all are fanciful placeholders that keep the funding going. Integrity need not apply.

If my doctors suggest some form of mind over matter or placebo/pseudo-science treatment I would look for another doctor. I do understand the desperation anyone might feel with a terminal illness and if they choose to seek solace in unicorns and rainbows that is their choice. But if my doctor starts treating me with magic I will opt out.
I tune in to these threads for the great benefit of your opinion.
I wonder if you are aware how much your comments focus on personal attacks against other posters rather than substance. It makes your points less persuasive. I don't mean to sound too snide about it; I offend in the same way myself quite often.
QUOTE: Pakistan: ONE MILLION MUSLIMS Attend Funeral of Terrorist Who Assassinated Moderate Lawmaker Who Defended Christians "One million" is extremely doubtful. Most media are reporting about 30 thousand in Rawalpindi, a city of three million, in a province of a hundred million. Is there any attribution to substantiate that MOST "news organizations" claim about 30,000? Those words don't seem to be what any reputable reporter would use.
Times of India: Tens of thousands of Pakistanis chanting anti-government slogans on Tuesday attended the funeral of a police officer executed the day before for assassinating a secular governor in 2011 over accusations of blasphemy.
BBC: Security was tight as a crowd of about 30,000 gathered to pay their last respects to Mumtaz Qadri in Rawalpindi. Voice of America: Tens of thousands of people in Pakistan Tuesday attended the funeral of a man executed a day earlier for the killing in 2011 of a powerful politician who criticized the country's blasphemy laws. CNN: Thousands converged Tuesday on the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi to bury a former bodyguard who was executed for killing the governor of Punjab province over his opposition to the country's controversial blasphemy law. Yesterday I voted in Marietta, GA.
Then I heard "The reason Georgia voted for Trump is because they are "poor and dumb" on CNN. It came from David Axelrod, a Hillary supporter. Mrs. Clinton also won Georgia. I would gladly trade the intelligence of the average Chicago voter (Axelrod's and Obama's stomping ground) for the intelligence of the average Georgia voter. When the Tea Party was popular, the parties and the press categorized them as crazies. It worked. Many people did not want to call themselves Tea Party members because they did not want to be thought of as crazy. That's not working this time because Trump and his followers are winning big. The establishment parties and media try a new slur almost daily to see if something will stick but it isn't working. In fact every slur is just working to reinforce Trump's followers' belief that it it us against them. And "them" are panicked. One day they go with the KKK story, the next with a Mussolini quote (the quote did not originate with Mussolini, BTW, it was a popular Italian phrase long before), tomorrow it will be something else.
Yesterday, it was the racist Trump hates innocent, polite and behaved black college kids and throws them out of his rally for being black story. None of the media bother to actually show the videos, which show the innocent little black kids tearing down banners, doing the Black Lives Matter schtick, black power salutes, and chanting and screaming, and then being hauled off by the police. Trump wasn't even there yet, they started the agitation before the rally got started.
Whole thing orchestrated by the Left through phony tweets and then fed to the leftist media which of course gobbled it up. RE [zman] Related, on Cloud People vs. Dirt People:
QUOTE: If anything, like the peasants in the Italian countryside when Alaric approached Rome, they will side with the wrecker. this analogy is correct and the zman is right but not for the reasons he thinks. the teutonic invaders who destroyed the western empire turned around and aped its civil, religious and administrative apparatus, and the peasants who might have welcomed a change found themselves as second class citizens again. This will happen here. If Trump wins, the only long time winners will be the establishment. That may well be true, Donny, but if that is the case, why are they fighting him?
the establishment will do everything it can to resist change. but the elites always land on their feet, and a Trump and the GOP will accommodate each other in the long run. whatever the prospects for change look today, in Trump's second term, it will be business as usual for Washington.
Connecticut. What could possibly go wrong?
From the article: Monday, a bill to ban the weaponization of drones was discussed, and on Tuesday, a bill to control the use of drones in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies, was debated. Police made the argument that armed drones in law enforcement could be an effective weapon for public safety. "We've had a report that somebody's going to fly a drone into an airplane, into an engine, or it's a weaponized drone," Farmington Police Chief Paul Melanson said. "We're concerned and we don't have those answers yet." http://fox61.com/2016/03/01/police-appeal-to-lawmakers-for-future-options-on-arming-drones/ "We've had a report that somebody's going to fly a drone into an airplane, into an engine, or it's a weaponized drone," Farmington Police Chief Paul Melanson said. So, not content with becoming special forces wannabes, now the police want to become an air force too. And, once again we have an announcement by the NEA that they are wonderfully corrupt in the most important ways !
