Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Real Clear Science is a joke when it comes to actual scientific understanding. And that article fit into their usual uselessness.
Jeb the Unlucky? Try Jeb the least manly!
Guy started the year with a paean on his website to his diminutive, mini-me bride, that was sickeningly "beta" and made it very clear who wears the pants in Jeb's house. Then, instead of working out and developing an actual, you know, manly male physique, he appears looking soft, round-shouldered and dough boyish, with those ridiculous wire-frames. He resembled nothing so much as an associate professor of Women's Literature at a third-rate Southern liberal arts college. And with that image (including his own self-image) he was going to stand up to the ultimate alpha, the Donald? HA!!! He could barely compete with that ghey caballero, Rubio. This message brought to you as a free public service by the appearances-centric organization for elections strictly by popular acclaim. Thank you for supporting your candidate as part of the nearest mob, just as structural originalism intended.
I don't know man, I've heard a lot of Trump supporters who seem to be fixated on manly men and alpha/beta males and dominance and submission. NTTAWWT, of course - de gustibus non disputandum, as the dung beetle said to the honey bee.
re Not From The Onion: Women Make Less Money Than Men Selling Things On Ebay…
If true there could be two reasons for this. The first is obviously incompetence, and there are plenty of such sellers out there, both male and female. The second is that there are sellers who just seem to want to be rid of their stuff, ie get it out the door ASAP. It appears they are willing to take less to get their widgets off their hands. Perhaps more women fall into these categories. I find it highly unlikely that people purposely bid less based on the gender of the seller. I was thinking the same thing. There's a problem either with the journalist's report, or the methodology underlying the study.
In an auction, I'm not going to be bidding 4/5 $X if I presume the seller is a woman and full value $X if I presume a male. That's not only illogical, it's a waste of time to do the legwork needed to figure it out. After all, if I do that, someone else will likely know some people will be less than full value $X and bid the price up using a sniper program. My guess is that the study was done poorly. It should not be difficult to design an experiment where you auctioned a variety of identical items, varying the gender clues in the seller description, and looked for correlations. However, since the bidders would not know they were participating in such a study, this may not get past an IRB.
But still a data dredge would seem to be the worst way of doing this (or most other kinds of research). The way I see it, this article is not about eBay or money or men and women. it is about the mindset and instincts that provide aggressive/passive, hunter/gatherer predator/prey behavior. Money in this case is only the marker.
We can learn from our little friends in the animal world: slow, fat, passive, lazy &c behavior gets one eaten. Aggressive, (I hesitate to use "alpha male"; it is so misused,) behavior ensures one has a place at the dinner table. Winners and losers. Either/or. I suppose I could have just said that. "Women Make Less Money Than Men Selling Things On Ebay"
Where does stuff like this come from? The answer is simple. Special interest groups do a little research usually using a data dredge technique to find anomalies that favor their biases and get them into print. They may have to throw out a dozen or more anomalies that counter their particular agenda before they find a suitable phony story but that's the life of a propagandists. Think about it; it had to go one way or another. Either women made less on Ebay or men did. It can be a fraction of a percent difference but no matter it is the headline that counts. Remember the headline from a few weeks ago where more white Americans are committing suicide? No exact data, that is it could be one more than last year but never the less it was more. Meaningless in the greater scheme of things as statistical data tends to ebb and flow over time. What did surprise me was the glee from the minority communities to this news. Where did that come from? Actually it is predictable, it is classic socialism/liberalism. That is giving the appearance of equality by dragging down the successful to the lowest common denominator. I for one am in favor of women rising their prices on their Ebay junk. Hang tough and next year women could be the big winners. Re: Guys: Never Talk to a College Girl
If half of what I hear and read about feminism on campus is true, I would advise men not to go to college at all and go to tech schools instead. Re: Guys: Never talk to a college girl
For many throw-away majors, college has just become a six-year baby-sitting activity for the institutions to pull in cash from the unsuspecting. No one can get a job with a degree in women's studies or black studies and degrees in humanities are almost useless. The equally-useless professors in dead-end fields try to turn student's attention away from the very bad deal they cut for themselves ($250,000 for worthless script) and aim to get these students ginned up about something other than how they are being screwed. You don't see engineering or accounting or pharmacy students at sit-ins and protests. They are too busy preparing for their careers. Even back in the 1960's when I was in college--science and engineering. We had no time for the protests as we were in class. And that means Saturdays too. Labs were required and often at night or on the weekends. Some geology field trips were Saturday and Sundays and we camped out on Friday and Saturday nights--we didn't know we were oppressed!!
Re: Brexit: Left and Right Unite to Eject the Green EU from Britain
This is one of those stories that illustrate the axiom that politics makes for strange bedfellows. Farage and Galloway are truly strange bedfellows! The risk is that the radical left that supports Galloway will become more powerful out of this. Getting out of the EU this way could come at a high price. NOT retreating from the EU could come at a bigger price. Thanks to Boris Johnson for making the point that the EU's policies are turning the UK into a socialist satellite of the Continent requiring them to give up any and all democratic stances.
Students Panic Attacks & Whiney Brown Students
It would seem these college students are not really there to get an education as much as they are there to push some sort of agenda. Or more likely, trying scam their parents out a few more years of being financially supported under the guise going to college for an actual education. It would be an interesting study to determine how many professional degree students (by that I mean, mathematics, hard sciences, engineering, pre-med, etc.) are having these same problems. And I would pretty much bet no there are no whiney brown Indian students either. My guess is the students with all these social problems are the ones studying what I would consider hobby subjects like most of the liberal arts subjects such as literature, history, gender studies, art, music, puppetry, communications, graphics, etc. The same ones who got a gold star for putting their name on the paper, and were passed along just to get them out of school. And because whiney brown people are allowed to get in to your universities with lower scores than the non-whiney, non-brown people, the problem is obvious. I suspect none of the students in the hard sciences have time for this sort of nonsense because they're too busy studying and preparing themselves for the real world. . I like the Oculus.
I've seen it, walked through it, and while outside it looks something like a hedgehog, it's still a pretty cool concept. Public officials approved spending 4 billion on an empty people transiting warehouse. This is precisely the reason there will never be enough taxation to satisfy the infrastructure "needs" for which the government constantly nags the citizens, "more please". Reminds me of the Boston "Big Dig". Limiting bidders to keep bid prices up to keep money circling back to political pockets.
OH Canada !
Click here for a good giggle https://www.facebook.com/inthenowrt/videos?fref=photo All of our Canadian relatives are angry about Justin Trudeau winning last Fall. They literally don't understand how he won and are afraid he will destroy Canada. One Aunt calls him a "wackadoodle" and she only wishes they could trade him for Trump. I stay out of their politics, I listen to them but resist the urge to chime in. I do have a question for any Canadian or anyone who knows; what has Justin done? He seems quite young. What has he achieved in his brief time on earth that makes him qualified to be Prime Minister? I mean something other than his last name.
My former neighbor now in Germany wants to trade Merkel for Trump. I guess he needs to clone himself.
