Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Unsaid in the Donald Trump & Bernie Sanders Are Burning the GOP & Democratic Party To The Ground, Thank God. article:
Reason knows that when the primaries are over, voters will discover in the first debate that there is a popular former Republican governor from a "leans Democratic" state running as the libertarian party candidate, and (in comparison to Sanders and Trump), he sounds sane and sensible. Ref: "knew of ISIS plot..."
Here we go again, more authoritarian BS. 'Necessity' is always the justification of the tyrant. These government power types are having a collective orgasm over the ISIS threat, because they see it as a chance to frighten the public into surrendering more of their privacy. The truth is, while privacy provided by networks is good, nothing substitutes for using a strong, open source program on your own device. Unlike the wording in the news articles, these are not some mysterious tool that terrorists have, they are tools that anyone can use. It's damned hard to suppress freely distributed software. Looks like it's time to reboot the cypherpunks movement of the 90s because the fight is coming back. [I've never been an Apple fanboy, but Tim Cook is looking like a hero to me] Apple will lose its brand, the raison d'être for its existence and primiere pricing, if it gives in. Cook needs to stand his ground or the Chinese will be in every phone and all the contents within hours.
The FBI went to the wrong place for cracking services. They could have gotten it done in Russia, Romania and a few other places for a nominal price.
Science says Bible more bloodthirsty than Koran
I smell a rat - and a big one at that. How do you scientifically "prove" a moral judgment (i.e., whether someone or something is "bloodthirsty")? Comparing holy books is a pointless exercise that proves everything and nothing at once (and I should add here that nothing annoys me more than non-Muslims who cite things in the Quran to "prove" things about Islam - particularly the "bloodthirsty" stuff). I read the article but didn't find any science.
Anything I wanted to know about islams I learned from 911 and watching them yell allahakbar as they beheaded normal people and shot up army bases and Christmas parties. if yon animals tell me that raping women and murdering children is authorized by the Coran, who am I to argue theology? Its their holy book. I am willing to concede that a number of mohammedans -- possibly around a hundred -- are bad islams who have fallen away from the teachings of mosk and coran and who aren't all that jazzed about slaughtering infidels. It is also true with the ongoing war that a large number of islams are good islams, in the Gen. Phil Sheridan sense of the word good. as for the rest of the islam gutter trash, f'em. "Science says Bible more bloodthirsty than Koran"
Interesting thing about science compared to religion. Science can be and often is wrong. Science changes itself when it discovers that it is wrong. The Bible is more blood-thirsty because God knows man is sinful and cannot escape the chains of sin. Since the Bible is a record of what actually happened, of course there will be violence and blood and horrible things. That is the state of man. And that is why the New Testament, which is full of redemption, grace and love has survived for over 2000 years. The Old Testament (plus parts of the New Testament) is a mirror of who we are. Only Jesus Christ can save us from that blood, violence and death.
The difference between the Bible and the Koran is that one offers saving grace from God and forgiveness and the other encourages man to continue his violent and destructive ways. The difference between the Bible and the Quran is really quite straightforward: the former is the holy book of Christians; the latter the holy book of Muslims.
Beyond that, the argument over the relative merits of either is purely theological. "Rent-a-minority"--isn't that the definition of affirmative action quotas?
"The Ban On Cash Is Coming, Soon"
Will the imposition survive the first hurricane? The first widespread power outage? "The head of the CIA says American spies knew the Islamic State terror group was plotting an attack days before militants slaughtered 130 people in Paris last year."
Yes, but as is so often the case with these maddeningly inane and useless "news" snippets, did the CIA know the attack would be against Paris and did they alert their French counterparts? Dear American Cousins,
I'm only going to say two things about your presidential election process: 1. It takes far too long and it is far too convoluted and expensive. 2. If The Donald and Comrade Bernie drop out, it will become very tedious very quickly. Yours truly, A Canadian Friend and Ally @ JJM - Careful there. You don't want to get labeled as a fascists, commie or socialist.
Obama has been great for America, so much so they voted him in not once, but twice! Imagine if either Ms. Clinton or Mr. Sanders end up in office. I suspect our American cousins will be asking for visas to either your homeland or mine! ;-) Then again, Mr. Trump could win. What could possibly go wrong? . I sympathize with the head of the CIA and others who are privy to information that is down right scary. I think it would be useful for our government to find a way to better inform the public about the terrorist threat. Something that mirrors what is discussed in the top secret briefings. We are simply not taking this threat seriously enough and the public is simply unaware of the roadblocks to protecting Western civilization. It is possible that we will merely see occasional bombings, shootings and other terrorists attacks for years to decades. We might become accustomed to it much like Israel has. A hundred people killed in Paris or London or NY City; no big deal that's the price of choosing to not really deal with the terror threat and the radical Muslim death cult. But it is a very real possibility that the terrorists will acquire nukes. They truly want to kill millions. In fact if it were possible they would gleefully kill billions, When that happens (not if) what will the talking heads and politicians say then? It could be prevented, but it won't be. It will happen. Imagine the disaster that a nuke will cause in Tel Aviv or Paris or London or NY City. It will happen. That is the deal we are making either unconsciously or knowingly. That is what the CIA chief is trying to say but cannot. Imagine a million people vaporized in a second in a great Western city and we 'could' have stopped it but our confirmation bias prevents us from understanding what's at risk and what must be done to prevent it. Understand that when that happens, when the terrorists nuke Tel Aviv or any Western city that is just the beginning. It will likely trigger a nuclear response on Iran and other terrorists supporter countries. What will we say then about the intelligence gathering?
...‘deconstructing whiteness’ program at Northwestern University. They're skating real close to brainwashing with this.
Re: Donald Trump & Bernie Sanders Are Burning the GOP & Democratic Party To The Ground, Thank God.
The similarity is that ideologically Bernie is actually for what the demoncrats are for but won't admit it (cradle to grave free stuff) and Trump is actually what the GOP establishment is ideologically for - something that ain't really conservative. The difference is that Bernie is ideological and Trump is not. If they both blow up their respective parties, the demoncrats become socialists and the pubbies become... whatever... We'll see if the Libertarians can rise out of the ashes of either or both of them, but their history for this ain't very good. "greening deserts globally."
I often wondered, having been a participant in the Persian Gulf War (1991), how much the extra water introduced to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the Emirates, etc., by 500,000 servicemembers using untold gallons of water a day for drinking, cooking, hygiene, and so forth. That had to be a LOT of water added to a relatively arid area. Had to have SOME effect. Don't recall where I saw this. Written in 2010 but more relevant than ever.
