Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

In 1993, I saw Hillary being interviewed on the Today Show concerning her health care bill. When told that most of America was against the bill her response was: "Oh Brian, you know that sometimes Americans don't know whats best for them and when that happens those of us in government must just make it happen". NFL donations to brain research benefit league-linked doctors, raise worries about influence on science: Researchers should only be funded by the government because that way you can be sure there's no influence on researchers to come up with findings favorable to government, conducive to keeping the government-funded-research money train rolling, right? I'm not sure what sort of traumatic brain injury you'd have to suffer to believe the CDC or the NIH is ever going to conduct research that concludes "there's no role for the CDC or the NIH to play here and government funding for this program should be cut". If it's so obviously a conflict of interest to have the NFL funding research into whether or not the NFL is responsible for a lot of injuries, why is it not so obvious when the government funds research into whether or not we need more government spending on a particular problem?

Good for Kent, Connecticut. The more good guys that we allow to carry guns, the less damage bad guys can do with guns.

My small hometown considered doing the same thing 2 years ago. I went to the school board to urge them to pass it. But they voted 4-3 not to. Every time the board came up with straw man argument, we explained how the plan would not be hindered:

"But you can't arm every teacher". I know. None of us want anyone armed who can't handle a gun. We will only allow a small number of teachers and staff on each campus to be armed. They will be concealed handgun owners who provide their own weapons and ammo and store the guns in biometric safes hidden in their classrooms.

"You can't trust anyone who isn't a cop to have a gun in a crisis situation". Really? Have you seen how often cops shoot the innocent bystanders? Every CHL holder I know spends their own time and money practicing to make sure they hit their targets. While I realize nobody is perfect, is it any worse when a CHL holder shoots an innocent bystander than when a cop does it? "the cops will show up and shoot the good guy teacher by mistake". Our plan won't allow any teacher or staff member to carry on campus unless they work with local law enforcement a minimum of 60 hours per year in combined response drills and range time. The local law enforcement will know these people.

None of that mattered to the people who are sure that guns in the hands of CHL holders are deadly. Never mind the fact that CHL holders carry every day all around you and NONE of them have ever mistakenly shot a bystander. I am not saying it can't ever happen. Just that it happens so seldom as to be statistically insignificant.

So, the Democrats are eating their own. Thomas Jefferson? Andrew Jackson? Does anyone wonder why 95% of the States are Conservative. Will the Democrat, Liberal, Socialist, Communist party be willing to rename or destroy all historical objects (buildings, roads, bridges, etc) honoring former Ku Klux Klan members? They could start with Justice Hugo Black, Senator Robert Byrd and President Harry Truman. Ask some of your friends of the Anti-American crowd.
