My lad and a couple of my cousins are studying old family portraits and putting them on a family ancestral photo website. Good clean fun. They emailed me this photo of a couple of my Mom's ancestors, asking me whether I recognized them. They must think I am ancient, but I can't even make out the faces.

A guess is that's my great-grandfather's winter house in Fort Lauderdale. His grand old place still stands there.

Because they are on the porch, and the awnings and chair cushions are stripes, I understand why you would think that is FL. However, I have to question the trees in the background--those do not look like anything I have seen in FL.

I agree. Trees such as those don't populate any area near Ft. Lauderdale.

Then it's Bridgeport. Very nice photo to have as part of your family heritage, BD!

Interestingly, my daughter has decorated the enclosed porch on her Victorian frame house with much the same furniture, striped window shades and wicker tables. It's a cozy place to sit during summer rainstorms.

My first thought when I saw it was that it is a picture of a painting.
It looks vaguely familiar.

The lady in the photograph appears to be wearing leg-of-mutton sleeves, which were fashionable for only a couple of years in the 1890s. The photograph was likely taken in 1894 or 1895.

I've been putting my Family pictures on Flickr. I migrate a few over the family ancestral sites as I get to them. I can keep a terrabyte (which is nearly 30,000 photographs) on Flickr for free. (No I am not paid, I'm just most familiar with them. There are other sites.)

Those old photographs, such as the one you show, usually show an extraordinary amount of detail, much more than a digital camera, even now, can capture. Your quick digital shot likely doesn't do it justice. You can scan them and use one of the photo editors to focus in on an area you want to look at more closely. A photo like this has an incredible amount of period detail to examine. As I've scanned in more family pictures, I've found I get better at figuring who was who in them, where they were, and even when the picture was taken. Add to that the wealth of information available on line, and you can learn a great deal about your family.
