We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Wow. Quite a story. We face this fairly frequently in mental health - a rape accusation that is later recanted. Usually the accused rapist is a family member and the victim comes under some pressure from other family to recant. It becomes hard to know what position to take with the victim. Our suspicion is usually that the rape did occur and the first story was the real one. But we also do not want to contradict what the patient is telling us now, because we do not actually know what happened. We are careful to leave the door open for the victim to go back to her first story.
More than once in my four decades, I have had patients who I eventually believed were both: women who had been raped in the past but recanted or were disbelieved, who later made a false accusation.

Mason and Rittgarn believed Marie when she said she dreamed the rape. Really?! What about the shoelaces and the abrasions? Did everybody else dream them? They were right to be embarrassed at the crummy job they did of investigating that rape! Thankfully, they did make changes.
