Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Earth to Yancy: If white supremacism does make a comeback, a big part of it will be the result of white people deciding to be hanged for sheep as for lambs.
re 40% of Blacks Line Up Behind Trump – 45% of Hispanics
This is an eye popping poll and surprises me. Be interesting to see if it holds up. All the more reason for the GOP to crush Trump. They don't want all those 'people of color' voting Republican do they? (sarc/off) feeblemind: re 40% of Blacks Line Up Behind Trump – 45% of Hispanics
It's hard to tell from the article, but that's probably among Republicans. Note that Clinton is not mentioned in the article. re: The science myths that will not die
"Antioxidants are good and free radicals are bad" Interesting, isn't it, that the basis of this entire quackery was "Harman had a thought “out of the blue”, as he later recalled." But isn't that where all of the new age quackery comes from? Wouldn't it be great if there were magic herbs/foods?? Human nature being what it is we want to believe we can live forever or at least in perfect health if we just do the right things. Wouldn't that be great? And their lies the germ of alternative medicine and fad diets. Gotta go eat breakfast now. A sugar free, fat free gluten free crust of toast and an egg white cooked without butter. Some antioxidants are free radicals. Why doesn't anyone ever mention that?
Why do we let those radicals run free? I say, arrest them!
FAD!
"...there is a global scientific consensus to limit saturated fat intake with most authoritative bodies recommending getting saturated fat at least under ten percent of calories, with the prestigious U.S. Institute of Medicine and the European Food Safety Authority recommending to push saturated fat consumption down as low as possible. "The latest guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend reducing trans fat intake, giving it their strongest A grade level of evidence. And, they say the same same for reducing saturated fat intake. Since saturated and trans fats are found in the same place, meat and dairy, cutting down on foods with saturated fat will have the additional benefit of lowering trans fat intake. "The American Heart Association recommends pushing saturated fat intake down to five or six percent. Many people don’t realize how small of a serving that is. One KFC chicken breast could take us over the top. Or, two pats of butter and two cubes of cheese and we’re done for the day. That’d be about 200 calories, so they are in effect saying 90 percent of our diet should be free of saturated fat containing foods. That’s like the American Heart Association saying two meals a week can be packed with meat, dairy, and junk, but the entire rest of the week should be unprocessed plant-foods." Exactly! These organizations see their lofty pronouncements as directly related to their power and in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary they will not and cannot change. This is no longer about science (and perhaps was never about science) it is raw bias and personal agenda. If a plant based diet were so good for you the evidence would be obvious to all. But we all die and many die from heart attacks regardless of what we eat. Clearly these diseases and the propensity to die from them are genetic and not caused by our diet. At this point I simply cannot tell if it is stupidity, stubbornness, or malignant intent. At this point I simply cannot tell
Exactly! It's almost like at this point you simply will not tell! SCIENCE! except when it's lifestyle craving. Either way, SCIENCE! and windy opinions! Pfft. "Professor: Trying to Make Me Like the Beatles Is a Microaggression"
I concur. Would he rather be encouraged to like Weird Al? Frank Zappa? Rap? I am so not bummed for him.
I like Weird Al. I also am a Zappa fan along with Charlie Mingus, Al Dimeola, Marc Antoine, etc..
Music is music - it can never be a "micro-aggression" no matter how hard they try to make it one. What's wrong with the Beatles? You'd prefer Kenye West? Fiddy Cent? Snoop Dog?
"Professor Calls White Americans Racist in the NY Times"
Someone should tell Herr Professor that not all White Americans are Democrats. The Riot Ideology:
The police need to pick it up. It is absolutely crazy that we have these riots one after the other and the best we can hope for is the police aren't routed. What the police need to do is put 100 men on the ground with cameras in addition to the riot police. Get pictures of everyone who breaks the law be it burning cars or beating up little old ladies. Then the next day when they are surrounded by their homies go find them and arrest them and charge them with something serious. It seems likely that once the thugs catch on they will wear masks so the riot police should snatch any rioter wearing a mask and cuff them to spend the night in jail. Special teams of "grabbers" armed with cattle prods. The cops could also have teams of 'draggers' Could then grab the stunned and cuffed thugs and place them in paddy wagons (in seat belts of course). Forget the thousands of "spy cameras" along British highways: the village copper does just as well.
Some years ago, two of our offsprings were visiting Scotland and rented a car for the day. Driver became somewhat lost, and drove into and out of a village en route to somewhere else. Village copper saw them, thought the driving erratic, and called the bobbies down the line. Offsprings were stopped. Bobbies very polite - took id, etc., and the "when did you have your last drink?" "Canada." "And what is your occupation?" "Lawyer." Bobbies satisfied that just unfamiliarity with driving on the wrong side of the road, and sent offsprings on their way with a hope for a good holiday. Something that has always annoyed me on these "safety" stops in the US - it's when the LEO asks if I had anything to drink.
I always say yes I have. The next question is "how much did you have" and I'll say about a six pack or so. That's when they ask me to exit the vehicle at which point I ask why. Then they say "impaired driving test" to which I ask why? Then it's "you admitted to drinking". To which I reply "you never asked me what I was drinking". At which point they get little belligerent at which point I ask for the check point supervisor and in plain language explain that the question should be "have you had any alcohol today". I always get passed through although I hate to ruin a LEO's evening by being a jerk. My youngest is a LEO (South Carolina State Trooper) and he does it my way. I pointed this out to the head of the DPS at a ceremony my son was involved in (he was Trooper of The Year for his post) and he agreed with me, but it seems as if its ingrained into the culture that "drink" equates with alcohol which equates to "drunk". |
