Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Lettuce bad for the environment? I don't think so.
Every time I've tried to grow the stuff, bunny rabbits have found a way over, under, or through my fence and munched it down to the ground. Then they turn it into fertilizer pellets they leave all over the yard. Finally, they come back once too often for another snack - and instead become lunch for the local hawk. I supposed the chunks of fur, bird poop, and dried blood in the yard also nourish the soil. My only complaint about the whole process is that I still have to buy lettuce at the market if I want a salad with my steak. Lettuce, especially the trendy leaf lettuce, is a very inefficient way to ship water.
Whereas hogs are a very efficient way to ship arteriosclerosis. #winning!
Meanwhile, ostensible 'Murican patriots disconcerted that "How Not to Die" makes NYTimes best-seller list: http://nutritionfacts.org/video/book-trailer-for-how-not-to-die/ QUOTE: Lettuce ´three times worse´ for environment than bacon, new study says Lettuce has virtually no digestible calories. You can't live on lettuce. No one suggests you substitute lettuce for meat in terms of calories. According to the study, Tom et al., fruits and vegetables have low greenhouse gas emissions, but high energy and blue water utilization. Grains, which typically form the core calories of a balanced, reduced-meat diet, are low on all three measures. The purpose of the study was to determine the environmental impact (greenhouse gas emissions, energy, and blue water) of various recommended diets. The biggest recommended change was a reduction in sugar additives and solid fats, which have a low impact. Substituting vegetables and dairy substantially increases the overall impact. Oberlin used to treat black students as students, no quarter asked or given. The same standards for everybody.
That would be acting white today. Candid photo of Igor Stravinsky (1963) visiting Oberlin, back when it was a serious college. https://www.flickr.com/photos/rhhardin/8549267605/sizes/o Sometime in the late 60s it went leftist. It used to be one in ten was admitted, now one in ten accepts. Reading the Merkel story, I was stuck by her naivety. Such as supporting the wholesale immigration of Muslims and expecting them to support the Christian Democrats to rule them?
I, also, remember one big issue with Germany in the 1930s was the large groups of ethnically unassimilated Germans in other countries and how Germany needed to annex these areas. Guess Germans really can't do critical thinking. I've come to accept the theory that the International Socialists really are trying to use the Muslims against the Nationalists.
I like the premise that the failure to enroll white students at what is aggressively touted as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) is apparently due to white bias.
The fact that the very aggressive marketing tells the white student they will not be accepted as a fully legitimate student at the school apparently has no impact. You have to be real "educated" to be as dumb as those in that article. QUOTE: Five Favorite Moonbat Stats Debunked ... Joseph Bast and Roy Spencer did an excellent piece explaining how this works at the WSJ. Bast & Spencer cite a study by Bray & von Storch. QUOTE: Bray and von Storch: Since the time of publication, the opinion piece, or parts thereof, has been widely distributed, more often than not verbatim, in the blogosphere. A.k.a. the right wing echochamber. QUOTE: Bray and von Storch: Bast and Spencer make claims about our work, which are inaccurate if not outright false... http://klimazwiebel.blogspot.com/2014/06/misrepresentation-of-bray-and-von.html And all the studies that support your point of view are gold standard accurate, eh Zach?
feeblemind: And all the studies that support your point of view are gold standard accurate
You missed the point. Bast & Spencer based much of their essay on a misrepresentation of a study by Bray & von Storch. Certainly Bray & von Storch are a valid authority for the content of their own paper! Or you could read the actual study. QUOTE: The spreading virus: Oberlin edition: UPDATE (Is this for real?) We believe these demands are appropriate insofar as they embrace certain nonnegotiable racial issues at Oberline. Howsoever, we also demand that the students demand an end to all microagressions against climate. We also note that of the 11 professors of jazz studies at the Conservatory, 9 are White Male Oppressors. Because all dese White Maless are culturally appropriating a Black African mucisal style we Demand that all 9 be fired or at least transferred to the marching band. And we Demand that Associate Professor Billy Hart be made boss man because he a cool cat, dig? I figure your comment was tongue in cheek, but I will add some information about blacks and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Max Roach, one of the all-time great jazz drummers, thought that the Oberlin Conservatory of Music was good enough for his daughter,Maxine Roach.
Which reminds me of a surprise I had when I met up with a cousin I don't see very much. I was showing him some of my photos, several of which I took of Max Roach playing at a local club. My cousin informed me that Max Roach almost bought his stepmother's house. Max Roach, one of the all-time great jazz drummers
Especially for bebop and hard bop fans. We liberals are uneasy with the concept of modern jazz, not only because of cultural appropriation issues, but because musicians must comp or solo, a risky display of individualism departing from rigid adherence to the Arrangement. In the 1970s I lived in Florida and the Florida Conservative Union was running ads with a picture of a car going off a bridge and the caption , "All The Way With Teddy K". They evidently didn't like Kennedy.
QUOTE: The San Bernardino Terrorists Weren’t Radicals -- They Were Mainstream - A huge tiny minority of extremists. The article attempts to claim that Muslims are inherently opposed to the U.S., pointing to high unfavorable ratings in Pakistan, but ignoring equally high favorable ratings in Muslim-majority Indonesia. Notably, there's an age-gap. Younger adults are more likely to approve of the U.S. Two adults with extensive ties via family and religion to radical organizations, and who were arguable recruited and planted in the US as agents are not at all representative of a certain strain of fundamental Islam, but a single troubled teen age boy unable to find anybody to join his plan to ignite a race war is evidence of virulent white supremacy in the United States. Have I got that right?

Have I got that right?
No. There is certainly a strain of radicalism within many Muslim communities. There is just as certainly a strain of racism within American society. The difference is that the U.S. is a much more open and democratic society, and is therefore more capable of restraining its worst demons. Z-Team: The article attempts to claim that Muslims are inherently opposed to the U.S., pointing to high unfavorable ratings in Pakistan, but ignoring equally high favorable ratings in Muslim-majority Indonesia.
Talk about changing the goalposts, Z-Team. There was a very good reason why the article focused on Pakistan. QUOTE: Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were Pakistani Muslims. Farook was a second-generation Pakistani immigrant who was born here, but when it came time for him to marry, he picked a Pakistani Muslim girl who shared his commitment to Islam and contempt for America. And that’s not unusual. And the Z-Team wants to change the focus to include Indonesian Muslims. Perhaps because talking about Pakistani Muslims will reveal some unpleasant truths about the origins of these terrorists. Based on my experience, I would agree that Indonesian Muslims are different from Muslims from other regions of the world. A good friend of mine teaches at Georgia Tech, and he recently remarked that Georgia Tech has been spared the identity-politics based upheavals that have been roiling campuses at other elite schools across the country for the last few months.
I told him, "Yeah - that would be the calculus requirement at GT. It functions as a filter on the whole SJW thing." So now whenever there is another blowup on another campus somewhere, my friend laughs heartily and says, "Thank God for calculus!" I told him, "Yeah - that would be the calculus requirement at GT. SJWs have never been good with that numbers thing, have they? They are awfully good with imaginary numbers other than [i] i [i].
Re "Lettuce ´three times worse´ for
environment than bacon, new study says" I'll show this to my wife, but I don't think she's going to buy it. I have to get my bacon on the sly. Re: Merkel and San Bernardino:
The left accuses those killed or injured in San Bernardino of being bigots, racists, afraid of the other (I especially like that one). If you don't welcome in as many damned Islamists as we can get into the country than you are a bigot. If you don't accept that fact that a certain percentage of them will indeed kill you than you are a bigot. The simple truth is that many/some of those immigrants and their children and grand children will kill Americans. They will do it this year, next year, the year after, the years after that and forever UNTIL we are either all dead or converted to Islam. We can make believe it isn't true and we can call those who do understand the problem names but it won't change it. We have made an agreement among ourselves to go ahead with this forced immigration against the will of the people and as part of that agreement we have decided that we will accept American deaths. Some number of death by Islam is considered acceptable to the left and even a good thing. "Good" because they can use these deaths to push for gun control. When the San Bernardino terror attack first happened the first report was it was three white guys. The media was salivating, it was a feeding frenzy, what could be better than a mass shooting by three white guys!!!??? A perfect opportunity to push gun control and blame white men. After all the media is getting tired of the phony claims by the left of white male racism/sexism that always seem to be exposed as frauds committed by blacks/females/lesbians. They really though they had hit the jackpot. But than the facts burst their bubble. Yes! They could still push the gun control thingy but it would have been soooooo much better if it had just been some white guys and AWESOME if they had been wearing sheets. But no it was Islamists again. Damn! Why won't catholics, LDS and presbyterians commit some terrorists acts for a change????? |
