Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: Roger Scruton, on the Heart of Conservatism Some excellent points about conservatism. QUOTE: Conservatism, Scruton writes, is a natural human impulse, perhaps the first impulse: to preserve the good things of one’s society. Conservatism starts from the “sentiment that all mature people can readily share: the sentiment that good things are easily destroyed but not easily created.” This is the foundation of conservatism. QUOTE: Freedom and institutions go together, indeed they can hardly exist apart Thomas More (by Robert Bolt): "Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you — where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast — man's laws, not God's — and if you cut them down — and you're just the man to do it — d'you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake." QUOTE: Associations can generate inequality; thus, the great liberal drive for equality, which had beneficial effects in the civil-rights movement, has more recently sought to impose a drab secular uniformity, with, for instance, the contraceptive mandate. There's certainly some truth to this. Half of the Left's ideas are half-baked (but which half?). The conservative argument is that change always has unintended consequences, and so change should be well-considered and moderated. QUOTE: Associations can generate inequality; thus, the great liberal drive for equality, which had beneficial effects in the civil-rights movement, has more recently sought to impose a drab secular uniformity, with, for instance, the contraceptive mandate. Ah! The essentiality of liberalism. Mere conservatism would have left the world mired in feudalism. The contraceptive mandate seems a pretty trivial example, chosen, presumably, because it is current. After all, government regulates what speed you can drive your car, what goes in the walls of a new home, stops you from dumping pollutants into the water, and taxes some of your income for the social security of the previous generation. Notably, it's the current liberal change that causes conservative consternation, while previous changes, the ones that have stuck, have become the accepted institutions. Re: NATO
From the article: QUOTE: Today it makes no sense for a country of 300 million to defend a continent of 500 million, when that continent is no longer facing a real military threat. The modern Russian army would stall before it made it to Oder–Neisse Line, due to the lack of supplies. There’s simply no reason for America to have troops in Europe and there no reason for NATO to exist. I don't disagree with the author's contention that NATO is no longer needed, but I disagree with this reason. It seems foolish to me to decide to defend or not to defend Europe on such a transitory situation as Russian supplies. NATO is no longer needed - or shouldn't be - because Europe should defend itself. They have funded huge welfare states from the largess of the US taxpayer. Later the author states: QUOTE: slam is not ascendant, no matter what the rulers claim. Islam is in collapse, a collapse similar to what happened to Christendom in The Thirty Years War. The various sects within Islam are at war with one another over a dwindling amount of influence over their culture. Western materialism is shrinking the pie, as it were, and the tribes of Islam are at war over who will get the lion’s share of what comes next. I think the author is overly optimistic. Europe is being invaded by Muslims, there are Muslim enclaves in major European cities that are ungovernable by the "host" government - in fact, there are factions in many European governments that are facilitating that. Muslims are often not held to account for crimes against the rest of the population, and the fertility rate of Muslim women far outpaces that of the indigenous women which will means that it is likely that in the intermediate term there will be majority Muslim European cities. This is going on while radical violent Islam is spreading across Africa. Islam maybe at war with itself, but that is a side show compared to the success in its war with the West. QUOTE: The modern Russian army would stall before it made it to Oder–Neisse Line, due to the lack of supplies. Meaning Russia would occupy Poland. mudbug: Europe is being invaded by Muslims, there are Muslim enclaves in major European cities that are ungovernable by the "host" government Muslims will be integrated into the broader culture — which is what worries fundamentalists. Terrorism is used to cause an overreaction, and drive people apart. mudbug: there are Muslim enclaves in major European cities that are ungovernable by the "host" government
Where exactly? I would say that when a group gets away with rape for an extended period of time such as Ratherham or Swedish Muslim ghettos or areas where the police claim they need permission from local Muslim leaders to patrol those ares, they are ungovernable in the normal sense.
mudbug: I would say that when a group gets away with rape for an extended period of time such as Ratherham or Swedish Muslim ghettos
If you include organized crime, then that includes nearly everywhere. Notably, even though law enforcement failed for a time in Rotherham, once brought to light, the law was enforced. There was no no-go zone. mudbug: ... or areas where the police claim they need permission from local Muslim leaders to patrol those ares, they are ungovernable in the normal sense. Where exactly? Because if it was a no-go zone, then there would not have been prosecutions and jail sentences for the perpetrators of crimes. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/local/claims-of-muslim-no-go-areas-in-preston-absolute-tosh-say-police-1-7618630

The fact that some responsible for the rapes in Rotherham means nothing. There were government officials who allowed Muslim men to rape girls because they were Muslim. It is highly doubtful that this situation would have been allowed to continue if the perpetrators were white and even more doubtful if the victims were Muslim. This sort of thing is becoming more common place in Europe.
Some police in England say there are no-go zones (http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/625545/Donald-Trump-Muslims-speech-British-police-ISIS-radicalisation-London).

Yes, and some police think the moon landings were faked. Unsourced quotes from a tabloid doesn't constitute strong support for your position. That some neighborhoods are dangerous is almost certainly the case, however, the claim is that they are no-go zones. The single specific you provided resulted in arrests and convictions, so clearly the force of British law applied.

We compel you to be virtuous for the sake and well-being of others as well as yourself. Because our goals are laudable and scientifically proven, coercive means are justified as an ordinary exercise of government authority. Melissa Harris-Perry Brings Parody to Life, Calls 'Star Wars' Racist
