re Spanking

The main purpose is shaming, not causing real lasting physical pain. A lesson sometimes must be learned by having real physical consequences to a enforce the idea of and cause/effect.
Because people, especially young children have short memories.

Ridiculous.
NOT spanking or disciplining often leads to gangsta kids with their pants hanging around their ankles and ripping off 7/11's when they are twelve, as evidenced by the large portion of the population that are raised by women and have no fathers who are the traditional disciplinarians.

Or becoming special snowflakes who vow to commit murder against people who wear the wrong Halloween costume.

Lovely, so what is he going to concentrate his efforts on? I'd rather see him spending his last days in office on issues out of the country. There's the Mars project, he could work on that.

I've decided I'd like to see Congress impeach him...not that he could be removed... just to keep him busy. The busier he is the less harm he can do; short sheet his bed, steal his dog, give his phone number to telemarketers. Run down the clock.

Thanks for the link to pure-gas, it had been a while since I had checked it and there is now a station listed within 15 minutes. I can't wait to run the gas gauge down far enough to try it out. The new Camry has never drunk so sweet a draught.

SS has been self supporting and has contributed $0 to the debt. Conversely welfare is an unmitigated disaster costs the federal government about $1.2 trillion a year and has cost over $25 trillion since 1965. Where is the effort to end or trim welfare.

SS takes in about $830 billion a year and distributes about $830 billion a year and yet it is suddenly causing our debt!!!
Here is how you "fix" SS:
1 Remove anyone from it who did not personally contribute for 40 quarters. Did you know that immigrants who come here after age 62 automatically qualify for SS?
2 Pay SS benefits consistent with what the beneficiary contributed during their working years. In other words follow common accounting principles. SS is not and should not be welfare.
3 Set the benefits to match the income. If SS takes in $830 billion and the benefits in the next year are going to exceed $830 billion then reduce every benefit by the amount needed to keep the total payout at $830 billion. Simple as that, never goes broke.
4 Separate the SS system from the clutches of congress. They screw up everything they touch.

Social Security has not caused one cent of the current national debt. Social Security was one of the main creditors for the national debt. However, it is no longer taking in more in "contributions" than it is issuing as benefits. Therefore, it is no longer providing credit to the general Treasury and will soon, cash in rather than roll-over the current bonds it holds issued by the US Treasury.

This is not a recent occurrence. Before they issued the first benefits check, Congress had already "stole" the reserve, uhm, Trust fund and issued I.O.U.s in its place. Now those I.O.U.s are going to be cashed in, but the government is in a panic as they depend on the "contributions" for their routine budget and don't have the funds to repay the loans.

That's not exactly true as your post seems to indicate. SS has been a drag on (rather than a contributor to) the treasury for several years. Earlier than it was supposed to after Congress fixed SS for 100 years in 1983, I believe).

Other than that small nit, I agree with your post. SS is just a slush fund for government.

As implied in the Bible quote above, it is a behavior rather than a physical condition. I have cancer, whether I think I do or not. Immutable.

This or that person thinks he is queer, or straight, or neutered; thoughts, synapses, neural pathways can be re-directed.

I used the word "queer" not pejoratively but to illustrate that the homosexual lifestyle is not Blue skies, apple pies happy and gay.

"I don't like who I am so I'll be who I'm not". That vibes: loser.

Michael Gambon does his usual good job portraying John Harrison in this very interesting historical tale.

Nowadays, of course, all navigation depends on clocks. The first Harrison naval clocks cost nearly a third of the cost of the ship itself. An interesting sidenote: The clock used by Cook on his voyage was lent to Bligh, then commandeered by Christian, and ended up on Pitcairn's Island.

John Harrison started as a carpenter and progressed to building clocks with wooden mechanisms - amazing stuff. A couple of them are still around. Even the first 3 sea going Chronometers had wooden components. You see the wooden gears on H1 here:

Accurate, detailed maps of at least South America and an ice-free Antarctica predate the invention of the modern, reliable clock. Nobody knows how, as longitude is impossible to calculate without accurate time.

Be assured your expertise in conforming things to the purported consensus view remains intact, Z-team. An ice-free Antarctica was charted, however, at a time unknown.

As was an ice-free coastline of Greenland and much of the southern Pacific by folks on rafts recording their landfalls by, of all things, wave patterns across many hundreds of miles. Like I said, nobody knows how the Antarctica was mapped.

Thanks for the Wikipedia proof. I know I eventually turn there for everything too.

Just finished watching 20 minutes of Dr. Carson's press conference from yesterday. I am now thoroughly impressed with his ability to handle pressure, answer questions on the fly, defend himself and fight back. Wow.

He took question after question after question tossed at him. He didn't have any handlers interfere. Didn't have pre-determined questions. Etc.

This is 100% the opposite of how Obama and Hillary operate.

It also shows me that, yes, Dr. Carson can do it. I can imagine him now in a press conference and deftly handling attacks from all sides. He didn't break a sweat (well, maybe a little one under the lights) and never really got that upset. He is starting to look more presidential to me. This scholarship controversy is actually going to help him.

Looking forward to the primary process and see the trial by fire. I still haven't made up my mind yet about whom I'm supporting. So this is all very enlightening to me.

My spies have sent me a Carson fundraising letter as he attempts to cash in on the fraudulent article.

It says:

If you've been watching the news, you've seen that the media is in full attack mode. They've been tracking down and interviewing my childhood friends and even accusing me of fabricating parts of my personal history.

Funny, because this was the same media that time and again declared it off-limits to dig into then-candidate Barack Obama's background.

The media's double standard is incredible, but even worse is their viciousness and blatant disregard for the truth.

I'll be honest -- I need your help. Now. I always knew this campaign would be tough, but the media is now going off the rails and we need the resources to fight back, 24/7.

On Ben Carson's Facebook page they have now posted the West Point recruiting materials from Carson's era encouraging blacks to apply. Among other things, the materials emphasize that admitted students receive a "full government scholarship." Also posted is an article from that period similarly talking about a "massive recruitment drive" by the service academies for qualified black students.

Another thing they have targeted him for is supposedly making up a story about a fake psych exam. His campaign has now also located and posted on his facebook page a media story written about that at the time, corroborating Carson's account.
