Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Amazon is evil. They are promoting the nationwide sales tax hard because they figure they have a huge advantage over their online rivals with Amazons enormous processing power. And I have other problems with them.
Haven't bought anything from Amazon since last May. It seems Walmart.com is going after them. The last 2 times I ordered from Walmart, I also ordered items sold and sent by what they are calling Walmart partners, I think. Both were delivered quickly and correctly. I have ordered a LOT from Walmart.com with only excellent results.
If they delivered fresh produce and dairy, I would seldom leave the house! I buy most everything from Amazon. The ebook thing is due to the big publishers running their ebook prices up to $14-$15 dollars. Short term thinking there. I just stick to the $4-$7 dollar range, plenty of decent writers in that price range.
Exactly. The smaller publishers who accept Amazon's pricing are doing just fine and have rising ebook sales.
Diversity
I’m just average, common too I’m just like him, the same as you; I’m everybody’s brother and son I ain’t different from anyone; It ain’t no use a-talking to me It’s just the same as talking to you. And perfect diversity will be when we no longer need the word "diversity". Equal, all on the same page, there are no losers, group-think obviates differing points of view, team player, go along get along, on the same wavelength, took the words right outta my mouth ... Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer . Re: Layla, it's about the coda
It is about the coda and also Duane Allman. Gordon's piano and Allman's crying guitar make the song. I'd go further and say that without Allman, Derek and the Dominos would be just another great band - among many. But Allman takes the band to another level. QUOTE: Decade long ice age predicted as sun 'hibernates' Probably not. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/07/14/no-earth-is-not-heading-toward-a-mini-ice-age/ Damn, back in the late '70s when the WaPo was predicting an ice age, we got warming instead. So now we are probably really in for a big freeze.
Michael Mann is not a credible source. Where are the Katrinas?
mudbug: Michael Mann is not a credible source.
The finding is not dependent on any one scientist. Various studies show that the signal from greenhouse warming is much larger than any expected declines in solar radiation. Those studies were done by the same people who are invested in AGW. I'm not impressed. Where are the Camilles?
Re: learning in this classroom
Any guess whether that male "student" knows his father (or whether any of them know their father)? What about the discipline policies in that school (all public schools for that matter)? Any bets that the administrators think it is unfair that more blacks are disciplined than whites? Maybe an administrator admonished a teacher for complaining about discipline by telling him that it was the student's classroom and he was a guest (actually said to a teacher at my daughter's grade school). Is this a Great Society of what? "But 50% of Americans have below-average intelligence. That's not defective, but might not be ready for calculus "
So you are equating being Conservative with not being ready for college? Nice. But this is a great sign. The real advancements of mankind have not happened at or due to the mainstream universities, unless you count Marxism. The great progress, steam power, the Industrial Revolution, classical liberalism and the belief all men should be free, the free market and capitalism for all, all came about from individuals educated outside the universities or at dissenting academies. The universities were and are also rans. Not unlike the Catholic Church picking up and running with the building of schools after the dissenting religions planted the idea of education for all. The "Conservatives" just need to set up a new signaling model and the universities are toast. Unfortunately, most of this complaint is about Conservative professors wanting a nice warm sinecure. I think you are reading too much into that. Conservatives and below-average-intelligence are not the same group.
Please define "conservative" as your comments fit absolutely no one I know who identifies as one. Please it's the age, the locations, the job, the dynamics of your media…clue me in.
"Big corn, big sugar go to court..."
A strange article but I was suprised by this statement: "and sugar is indeed bad for you" So I followed the link and found a health site based on superstition who believes if you follow his advice you can "Supercharge Your Body. Upgrade Your Brain.". Wouldn't that be great? Just eat the right food and with enough 'woo' you can be healthy and live forever. But in fact that is what every quack has claimed in their never ending effort to separate you from your money. Is sugar "bad" for you? Obviously not it powers your brain, your muscles and keeps you at 98.6. 100% of the carbs you eat are converted to sugar before they can pass through the walls of your intestines into your blood stream. (I suspect a lot of the whacko foodies still believe that those good carbs actually enter your bloodstream unchanged.) If you don't eat enough carbs your body can and will convert the fat and protein you eat into sugar. In fact if you are not eating it will convert your stored body fat and your muscle into sugar. Sugar is what powers you. Good carbs, bad carbs, your body doesn't care and doesn't know it is all converted into sugar and burned as energy or stored for later use. Re: OECD report on Britain's health care system
This is not news. The horrors of that system have been known and reported on for years. Of course, that didn't dissuade Obama's Medicare's chief Donald Berwick from extolling its virtues during the Obamacare debates. He claims the voting booth is the final arbiter of accountability (I guess he never read the polls about the popularity of congress or the direction of the country). Now he's trying to fix Britain's NHS - the very thing he said was great! Re: Obama licenses Iran to ship missiles to Hezbollah
What could go wrong? One could be forgiven for thinking that Obummer is just clueless (I've said so myself), but it's clear that he's actively working against our and our ally's interest (in this case, Israel). No one is going to live forever unless they conquer the Hayflick effect.

A commenter wrote: "This is a wonderful photo which I’ve never seen before. It is a picture of the 159th Street train yard just north of the 155th Street station of the 9th avenue el – the northern terminus of that line. The large structure along the right side of the photo’s frame is the Polo Grounds. In the distance to the east is Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The two bridges in the photo both cross the Harlem River. The bridge to the right is the Macombs Dam Bridge, which still stands today. The bridge to the left no longer stands today. It was used by the “Polo Grounds Shuttle.” A line that went from the 155th Street Station to the Bronx where it terminated at the 167th Street station of the IRT Jerome Avenue line. The Giants played their last season in the Polo Grounds in 1957. Subsequently, the line saw very little patronage and it ceased operation at 11:59pm on August 31st, 1958. It is worth noting that the Polo Grounds Shuttle line ran right through the heart of the area currently occupied by the new Yankee Stadium. http://www.shorpy.com/node/20276 I had no idea that Yankee Stadium and the old Polo Grounds were so close to each other. I Ben Carson Running for President: "Conservative politics are so closely intermingled with a lucrative entertainment complex that it is frequently impossible to distinguish between a political project (that is, something designed to result in policy change) and a money-making venture."
Am I living on the same planet? Having worked on the fringes of the entertainment industry for more years than I'm inclined to admit, I have met but a handful of Republican/smaller government/balance-the-budget peeps. Last week when the O was in town, the $33,000 per plate extravaganza was loaded with more "entertainment" doyens than I knew existed. I guess it the old meme: repeat the same meme often enough and anyone of any intelligence will swear it's the truth. That's the reasoning behind the word "meme". 6-Year-Old Boy Suspended for Playing with Imaginary Bow and Arrow -

And why shouldn't they shred the Constitution? It is the worst creation of sexist, racist, classist, homophobic white males.
When liberty dies in the hearts of the people, no court, no law, on constitution can save it. And it died among our elite decades ago. I can't recall the last time I heard politicians, academics, entertainers (sigh), journalists (sigh), et. al. speak positively of liberty and mean it. I sigh because in a sane society, those classes of people would not be regarded as important. Any guesses on how many politicians must be hanged until Britain is free?
