We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It sure does. It used to be done by wise old politicos in smoke-filled rooms, shrewd guys who really knew the people. Now it's up to the press, amateur and professional.
"Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz also deserve their share of blame for promoting an expansion of military without subsequent cuts. The U.S. should have a military to protect itself, but when a country is over $18T in debt, the only way to grow the military is to either cut from other places or raise taxes. The latter isn’t something conservatives tend to support, nor should they. The former is something conservatives in government don’t do enough."
For a true conservative (or libertarian), the solution to balancing the budget while strengthening the military is obvious - eliminate the so called "non discretionary" budget items that (a) make up the majority of the budget, and (b) are not authorized by the US Constitution - Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security.
For a politician, the conservative solution is problematic. They all recognize that the entitlement programs are devouring the country (in economic terms, they are shrinking our production possibility frontier). Yet, they also recognize that accusations that they are "pushing granny off the cliff" will doom their political ambitions.
There's an election going on up here in Canada, and a surprising number of candidates have been caught out for former Facebook postings, tweets, etc. Best one so far is an NDP (New Democrat Party - left wing for you Yanks) candidate in Ottawa who was found to have made an excessively tasteless joke about the electric poles shaped like penises at Auschwitz; her excuse was she didn't know what Auschwitz was until now. Only problem is that she is (or was) a local school trustee in a school district which has received awards for promoting Holocaust awareness.
