We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Love Gierach. Remember reading a piece of his about anti-gun hysteria when he recounted riding the NY subway as a teenager carrying a .22 rifle. To public school. Where they had a target range in the basement.
When I flew for a living 50+ years ago, our rule was never travel with more than you can carry in one trip to the crew bus. There was no such thing as suitcases with wheels, at least not in our price range.
That's it - plus money for anything you forgot. Going to Europe for 3-4 weeks equals one carry-on. The hotels can work out laundry service. Going to see relatives at Christmas - add two large suitcases with wheels and clothes for all kinds of occasions.
I absolutely love Gierach. I don't even fly fish, although I love fishing. He shamed me from ever using bait again, except for catfish, which isn't really fishing. If I ever conquer the spinning reel I will move on to the fly rod.
Someone asked me what I was reading one time and after I told him it was a book about fly fishing I realized that I couldn't really explain what the book was about. Philosophy, really.
