We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My daughter is a vet. With some regularity they see cats brought in with severe liver disease and malnutrition from some idiot owners who decide to feed the poor animal a "healthy", aka vegan diet. Many cats don't survive this cruelty and stupidity.
Dogs are omnivores; cats are obligate carnivores (doesn't mean they can't / won't eat other stuff - they are notorious for poisoning themselves with houseplants, for example). I'm sure this requirement for meat goes for the big cats as well.
Of course, dog owners are stupid too: here in "We Wuv Weed" Washington, vets are seeing a huge increase in dog deaths from marijuana ingestion. Dogs get a severe hyperactivity/seizure syndrome, which is not pretty to watch, and a high percentage die. Meanwhile their stoned owners claim the dog "accidentally" got into their stash (like they would let THAT happen...), but most cases involve intentional ingestion from the owners.
To wit: if a lion escapes from your local zoo, safest place to be is in the Whole Foods vegetable aisle, where the vegans hang out... safest place from dog attacks is your local marijuana dispensary.
How cats handle weed is another question -- they've been hooked on catnip forever...
