Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Higher education ala Hillary:
A sop to academia? Cronyism and wealth redistribution to all the useless non productive administrative pencil pushers and folks with otherwise useless degrees? And yes, it's a stodgy Boomer, 19th to mid 20th century mindset. Does anyone even ask if most future jobs will require a college education? Thanks for the 'shout out' to Aazing Ribs. It has been one of my favorite sites for years. Wealth of information there. That is where I found out about the Pit Barrel Cooker. Wonderful device.
Yes, they articulate clearly what authentic smoked ribs are about. The ubiquitous "falling off the bone" tripe is a sure sign the ribs have been at least partially boiled.
and "sealing in the juices" vs. the Maillard reaction
I can't shake the feeling that until BHO is gone (one way or another) it's a mistake to identify "What still works in the USA".
You might be putting a targeting reticule on it. Then, one person's "works" is another persons "wrong". In any case it's a much shorter list than it used to be. Re: Because Nothing Says ‘Protecting Her Honor’ Like A Father Letting His Own Daughter Drown
The episode described in this article points out how, dare I say it, Islam is a religion of death and therefore evil. That is not to say that all or even most of its adherents are evil or that they would let their daughter drown to "protect her honor". I suspect that most Muslims would be horrified at this story. But it is fact that Islam can be reasonably interpreted in ways that support the killing or death of others for religious reasons. This is something that cannot be said of Christianity (or any other major religion as far as I know). here's a different take on "honor killings". there are several other articles by this blogger that also address this issue.
I can sort of get the humiliation part, but the reason for it is the father's interpretation of his religion (or maybe how his religion was taught to him, but the point is still the same). His religion demands that the source of his humiliation (his daughter) be killed. Sort of like how Obummer would be fine with his kids killing his grandchild because he was inconvenient. Same putrid death culture, just a different justification. In both cases the ideology is more important than another's life.
Isn't there a famous musical about the problems of daughters marrying inappropriately... Fiddler on the Roof.
Re: Buffalo, NY
This really is a change! Many years ago I had reason to travel to Buffalo and to a person, nobody I talked to liked to live there! Does this mean that Cuomo's Start-Up New York is actually working? Trump's momentum reminds me of Newt's in 2012. the question on everyone's mind is : will it last?
Shooting of unarmed perps and in particular unarmed black perps is false arguement. While might be true that Michael Brown didn't have a gun it is stupid to say he was unarmed. He was 6'4" 300 lbs! Does that sound like he was unarmed? He was a bully who was accustomed to using his superior strength to hurt and intimidate his victims and that is exactly what he decided to do that day with a police officer. That brings up the second factor in this reoccurring story; the perp acts in an incredible offensive and threatening manner seeming to invite violence and then the apologists want to insist that none of this matters. The only thing that should be considered is the perp didn't have a gun! Far more people are killed by the deadly weapons of hands and feet then are killed by cops defending themselves or others from these crazy criminals.
Parenthood is worse than divorce, unemployment — even the death of a partner
Please. Stop. Writing. Drivel like this. Not all of us are self centered, narcissistic beings that only have children -or one child- for the wrong reason. Germany and mostly Europe has not even replacement rate population because they are conquered. Broken. "The third category was the most significant and was about "the continuous and intense nature of childrearing." Parents reported exhaustion due to trouble breast-feeding, sleep deprivation, depression, domestic isolation and relationship breakdown. The findings are likely to be eye-opening for some policymakers who are concerned about low fertility rates in their countries and suggest that governments should consider giving additional support to new parents." A-HA! there it is ! Just another article for the growth and expansion of government! oF coUrse! Next up:
Parenthood causes cancer! Because we need something to whine about and pass stupid laws that address nothing! I agree. What this article leaves out is the absolute love you feel for your child once he is born. How helpless that child is and how much care and concern you have for his welfare the minute you bring him home. Yes, sleepless nights are tough, but that last only a short while, and even after those sleepless nights you breathlessly watch your baby grow and develop. There is nothing in this world like being a parent. It is possibly the number 1 life experience that changes you for the better, in ways you couldn't imagine.
This article is most definitely for the liberals who want a reason to continue with abortion...("See how awful it is to be a parent? You can avoid this nightmare with a simple procedure.") Having a child requires sacrifice and now a days, too many people are selfish. They don't want to take the time and effort to start a family (i.e. a new generation). I don't think they care about the potential benefits. They just want to party. Just like they don't want to personally do anything about poverty or anything else. They'd rather get the government to do it for them.
It has to compete with voyeurism, celebrity worship, looking at oneself in the mirror, playing with the telephone, and preoccupation with cosmetics and clothes. In short, the infantalization of the West.
Taking care of an infant or toddler can be difficult, so yes, it is not a surprise that indices of happiness could go down for those who take care of an infant or toddler. Ask any caretaker when the child is older- was it worth it? Most will emphatically say that it was worth it.
Seems like a self-solving problem. Government can help here: sterilize all mothers and fathers who become unhappy because they have children. In a generation or two, problem solved by the natural course of evolution.
