Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

FDA Report Finds Food Prevents Hunger 98% Of Time When Properly Used
I looked at that and said "Onion!". African wildlife: I'll see you one dentist with a rifle and rise you twenty poachers with a shopping list for "Chinese Traditional Medicine". The US Census has discovered that Birthdays are good for you. The more you have the longer you live.
Why Millennials Are Still Living with Their Parents
Because there is no incentive to become responsible, self sufficient or independent, which is required for unsupervised living. 47% (or more) of adults don't even exhibit these qualities. Recently I handed my daughter her occupational/residency tax, since she graduated high school last year and has made more than $2400 this year and isn't attending college. I said, " Here's your penalty for working." (this tax is yet another that goes to the publik school system which is why every time I walk into my kid's school I am handed a census form requiring information on everyone who lives in my household.) African wildlife.
...."Thanks to the arrogance and ignorance of folks like Bill Gates, Bono, and Jeffrey Sachs, the continent has been showered in millions of chemically-treated mosquito nets, most of which have by-passed the bodies they were supposed to protect and ended up lining fishing nets. Perfect if one wants to poison fish and sterilise watercourses. “Without Western aid the law-enforcement agencies would not have been able to move and sell all the illegal meat, ivory, and fish,” says a safari-operator who wishes to remain anonymous.... Those who have come to help have only helped destroy. Humanitarian ‘feel-good’ philosophies aimed at stimulating population growth and Western guilt, which leads to ‘politically correct’ interventions that do not ruffle official feathers, seem set to stay. The only hope for African wildlife lies with those who make a living out of killing it." I give to a charity that digs water wells in Africa. now I'm seeing a lot of petulant, petty whining about mosquito nets being used for fishing. if said nets are being repurposed, I'm inviting you to consider that eating rates higher on the needs-scale than the malaria prevention for people who don't routinely ponder whether pasta is better with or without pasta water. So, this month, I'm going to make the donation to world vision donate a fishing kit in your name as well as all of the other detractors appearing on this thread.
your Jesus told you to "feed my sheep", He didn't tell you to do this in the most efficient, conservative/Taki-approved way. in fact, I'd bet the life of every lion not yet shot by dentists that 95% of the Taki readers use the reasoning in that article not to make any charitable contributions anywhere. >>I give to a charity that digs water wells in Africa.
well good for you ! I wonder why Africans can't dig their own water wells. Or produce their own mosquito nets. Or grow their own crops. Or conserve their own resources. Or run their own countries. these are the times I'm embarrassed to be a conservative.
but correct me if I'm wrong. I assumed that Christian charity intersected conservative values. but then again, I'm not a Christian and I don't do venn diagrams well. perhaps an actual Christian/conservative could explain this. Christian charity and care requires careful discernment, not reckless giving and self-congratulation.

in context, bd, in context.
are you agreeing with 4.1.1's assertion that Christian conservatives believe Africans should dig their own wells, feed themselves, produce their own mosquito / fishing nets?

"Christian charity and care requires careful discernment, not reckless giving and self-congratulation."
Christian charity requires little more than a willingness to help others without thought of personal advantage. There isn't a "Christian" way to improve either the governance or the economies of shambolic African countries. But Christians should be prepared to help Africans in need regardless.

Heh.
And speaking of fishing, remember the old saying: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you force him to buy a fishing licence." feed a man to the fishes and he's no longer a problem.
This comment is misplaced--it should be under # 4 instead of your other self-righteous comments.

RE The H-1B Visa Program Gives American Workers a Raw Deal
the Department of Labor will certify an alien under the "Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners" category if the employer does the employ-an-alien dance. because, who doesn't need more foreign maids and housekeepers? "French Maids" fall under a different category.

Public schools are pretty bad and inner city schools are the worst. It wasn't always that way. When I was in high school, NY and DC schools were very good, but that was before the cultural slide in the US started and the unions gained power in education. All attempts to impart accountability to the system has made things worse. It's obvious that the education model in the public school systems does not work. And why should that be a surprise since the federal government is not accountable to anybody. Why should public schools be any different. The only option is to allow people to inject their own accountability and vote with their feet. Went to the gym, not trying to get buff just rehab on the knee . Afterwards across the street to enjoy a beer at the pub and read the paper.
WSJ. http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-beautiful-oath-sullied-by-politics-1438730914 If you don't have access to the paywall; the Obama (mis)administration has (for totally unknown reasons) eliminated the section of the naturalization oath that enjoins the oath-taker to "Defend the USA by bearing arms..." Why? What possible reason is there to change that? Is the asshole afraid that someday he'll be found out and made to recite that oath if he wants to stay in the USA? Wouldn't you like to see his bucket list of abominations that he intents on inflicting on the country before 2017? Re: "bucket list of abominations..." We're like the frog in the frying pan, just one abomination a day, every day.
