We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
ah, Uber. Illegal in Europe because "it's a taxi service without a license".
And taxi licenses are a major source of income for local councils, as well as for taxi companies.
In more than a few places the scam goes like this:
Taxi license costs 5k from the city. City grants exclusive permit to issue taxi licenses to favourite taxi company. Taxi company sells licenses for 10k to their own drivers, demands 50k from competitors, pays 6k each to the city (1k of which in graft to the people who're supposed to verify that they're not abusing their monopoly by making life hard on competitors.
