We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Thank you BD--enjoyed this piece very much. I have always been interested in WWI. Perhaps, that is because I was born into #2 and all of my early memories are from that time after #2 when the men were coming home and there was so much hope: got to California where the sun and jobs are; go to university be the first in your family to get a college education; open up a small business; buy a first house; all of that energy and so much hope! But, that was not the case for the survivors of WWI. They came home to the economic depression and the quiet, unspoken preparation for #2, because as we all know-"The Great War" settled nothing.
I am enchanted by some of the writing that comes from the men (officer class as well as enlisted man). They spoke with a wonderful rhythm and understood how to manage the language. Some beautiful work out there.
I think this is his finest short story. His son Jack was killed in action in 1915 at Loos while serving with the Irish Guards - body never recovered. He wrote History of the Irish Guards in the Great War, considered one of the best regimental histories.
supposing him to be the gardener is a reference to Jesus in John 20:15
Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz
Yes, thank you for this sad, profound piece which packs such a lot into a small space. I wouldn't have understood the scriptural reference, so thanks also for solving a puzzle, Donny. Of course, everyone in England at that time would have recognized it.
