We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Who cares? Truth is an ugly thing! Always has been , always will be.
Lying is part of civilization and cultural in nature. It prevents people from fighting or killing each other. And ultimately, it keeps the human race multiplying: women lie as a matter of course as part of their sexual strategy. Without it, their strategy wouldn't work.
And if it were so terrible politically among statesmen, then BHO, Willie Jeff Clinton and the Hildebeast wouldn't have survived in their political careers more than 24 hours!
No amount of self-righteous tut-tutting wil change that.
Gladwell has made millions selling pretty lies packaged as 'science' .That's the state of journalism today. But this Ted talk unintentionally commits the confirmation bias in the example of Bill Clinton, since the presenter already knew he lied. To test the validity of these signals you would need to test them on subjects where you don't know ahead of time if they are lying or not.

I thought that was an uninformative, even naive worthless presentation.
answers depend on (1) are you entitled to the trvth and (2) what's really being asked.
1a. in all negotiations, to a greater or less extent, each side has to do its own due diligence. sometimes disclosures have to be made, but often there's a disclaimer that one side is not relying on statements of the other. this varies considerably.
1b. in a poker game, every bet, check, raise, check raise, semi-bluff, bluff or verbal statement can and should be deceptive, because the only time a player is entitled to the trvth is if you pay off the winner on a river showdown. but why would anyone think this is lying with all its bad connotations?
1c. Hans Landa is hunting Jews in occupied Europe. a deceptive answer to the question, "are you hiding Jews" (e.g., a flat out, totally deceptive "no") is not a lie because the nazis aren't entitled to the truth. moreover, giving up Anne Frank compounds the sin of Jew hunting with the stain on the soul of her to-be murderer.
2. any husband married longer than a year has to know from the context what wife is really asking when she wants to know if she looks fat in this dress and answer accordingly.
