Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Those comments on baby on a plane are harsh. Never knew what I was missing never flying. The majority of people seem to be less empathetic to other's suffering and a lot of people are hell bent on CAUSING other's suffering to increase. we are de-volving to a state that I don't like. It's Illegal for businesses to help employees pay for healthcare
Because not only does the executive branch and the Judicial branch get to write laws, but so do the alphabet agencies. I'm assuming because the IRS wants a cut of the money anytime, anywhere, anyone ever transfers any kind of value to another person.
"How can it be illegal to give employees $?"
Because that way the big business' lobbyists in Congress who concentrate on the IRS in order to rig the rules in their favor can justify their salaries. Re: Sanity is racist
Only in a university could somebody spout such nonsense. It is a place where not only does being wrong not have a price, but there's apparently no price for being stupid and you get bonus points for saying negative things against being white. THIS is why I'm having such a hard time anymore.. reading stuff that isn't cute kittens or other nonsense, because everything else is all such a waste of time.
Universities (and gvt and probably 90% of other "jobs") exist to give people who are otherwise not employable a job. This crap is so .. just crap. Even my 17 yr old daughter walks around saying, "i don't care anymore, I just don't care. Shut up. Everyone." As Kate on sda says, we need a famine, or an asteroid. Otherwise, I might just do something to get the ball rolling. One has to wonder how much longer this anti-intellectualism can go on. Every time I I think it can't get any more ridiculous, it does.
If you don't base a society or even a civilization on reality and logic, what do you base it on? It seems the answer is an illogical ideology. This better turn around fast! Well, all the famines in the modern era, post 17th century, can be traced to government policies that interfered with the market clearing the crisis, so famine is a real possibility these days.
re The Real “No-Go Zone” of France: A Forbidden No Man’s Land Poisoned by War
Very Interesting. Thanks for posting. If I ever make it to France I would like to visit some of the battlefields of the Great War. The French have been the butt of jokes for decades, ie the “surrender monkey” shtick. “Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion." Norman Schwartzkopf. /"We can stand here like the French, or we can do something about it." Marge Simpson etc……Maybe this article will bring home the reality of post WWI France. There were entire villages without …any…. able bodied men and many survivors had horrific injuries. Try to imagine that. It is why they built the Maginot Line; not because they were stupid, but because they were so lacking in man power.
That said, I agree with other commenters over the cheezy shot at Fox News. It made the article less credible, for me, an Indie. The no go zone appears to be cultivated fields when viewed on google earth
Indeed. That and the "lush forests" and "wild animals" give lie to the term "dead".
FWIW, it's a program to get more $$$ from Germany. Nothing more. Feh. This article seems to borrow quite a lot from Wikipedia and National Geographic. It is confusing because it seems to miss that the 460 sq miles is down to a scattered 65 sq miles (mostly near Verdun), insignificant to the whole of the French landmass.
Re: worrying about the deal, not the deadline
I suspect the Iranians are watching both closely. It seems we are so desperate to make a deal we will make any concession and extend any deadline. When you've already given up on your won "red line" on one issue (use of chemical weapons), you've shown that you're not likely to take a strong position on anything. I just ran across this speech 'Socialism' by F.J. Stimson (1903) last night. Very informative. I was unaware of the socialism experiment in Australia and New Zealand in the 1890s, nor the municipal socialism failures in England.
The speech can be depressing when you see how far down the road to state socialism we've gone since Stimson spoke. Also, how prescient he was on the natural outcome of socialism on religion, marriage, the family, etc. After reading the speech and contemplating where we are at 112 years later, I think I may adopt the statement of fjord's daughter. "Always been a mediocre museum, and always has looked like one too. "
What oft was thought but ne'er so well expressed. I read most of the Q&A of professor Caputo a few days back. Both of those professors are a piece of work. It did reveal why the Humanities are dying. No student in their right mind would sit through more than on class of such drivel. If students can't recognize that for what it is, for get remedial math or composition for entering Freshmen, they need a remedial class in BS. Of course, the latter would undermine most of what is passed off as higher education.
Re: the Outrageous Sophie Tucker
QUOTE: Long before Lady Gaga was pulling down her knickers on London stages, there was a bawdy blonde breaking boundaries named Sophie Tucker. Yeah, but did she ever wear a dress made of raw meat? Caputo: Likely thinks he's an intellectual, but he gives anti-intellectualism a good name.
