Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Our precious little snowflakes--
I'm so sick of everyone - and this includes adults too- who seem to think that your existence is guaranteed insulation from strife, discord, illness, accident, and unhappiness. S#$t happens. we live in this weird world where a large majority of people don't discipline their children or themselves. Where children and people do not have to live with the consequences of their actions because someone steps in and changes it to soften the blow of reality. Where -someone call the cops- a kid states something that goes against nature and the parents bend the world to make that insanity a reality (raising the kid as the opposite sex). Creating mental illness. No wonder everyone melts when things don't go their way. And let's celebrate victimhood! It is another world, now. One of my engineering professors would not go to his sons' high school graduations because he didn't value a high school diploma (everybody got one). One of his sons went on to get double degrees in mechanical engineering and math (in four years with a 4.0 in both), then went on to get a masters in both (in two years with a 4.0). My professor went to those graduations!
Considering some very smart people fail to do well in high school, for some parents you go to the high school graduation b/c it is a RELIEF you no longer have to worry about whether or not your smart-but-obstinate kid will graduate.
If you don't get an H.S. diploma, you are pretty much toast in life. "Considering some very smart people fail to do well in high school..."
The easiest horses to train are the dumb ones. Because the smart ones spend all their energy trying to get out of doing what is being asked of them. Humans, esp in education, equate obedience with intelligence. that was an asshatted thing to do to an 18 year old kid.
My professor told us that while we were in college and we all thought it was pretty extreme (I certainly value my high school diploma) and I certainly don't suggest parents treat their kids similarly. I merely was drawing the contrast between pride one parent in the article had for his son's pre-school graduation and my professor's esteem of his son's high school graduation (and to note that in this case, there weren't any scholastic ill effects). As an aside, my professor was not the ogre his position on high school might imply. He was a very popular professor.
I see your point.
but its a high water mark in the kid's career to date, and the professor, who is also a FATHER, is telling him his achievements are worthless by comparison to what? a professional engineer's? a tenured professor's? it comes off as small minded and self absorbed. while I'd happily dismiss the academic achievements of any engineer as trivial, I wouldn't do that if the engineer were my son.

Carefully sidestepping a lawyer vs engineer discussion...
I think his point was to denigrate the public school system than his kids' achievements. Given that they changed the name of George Washington High School (he owned slaves) to George Washington Carver High School (he was only named after the slave owner, but the saved a lot of money on signage), I think he had a point.

just pointing out that his kids might have done very well on an objective measure and presumably they must have, since they did well in college. so even if Danny Zuko gets an "A" doesn't mean that your friend's son didn't actually earn his.

"Are white men gods?"
A peer of the gods he seems to me, the man who sits over against you face to face, listening to the sweet tones of your voice and the loveliness of your laughing; it is this that sets my heart fluttering in my breast. For if I gaze on you but for a little while, I am no longer master of my voice, and my tongue lies useless, and a delicate flame runs over my skin. No more do I see with my eyes, and my ears are filled with uproar. The sweat pours down me, I am all seized with trembling, and I grow paler than the grass. My strength fails me, and I seem little short of dying. - Sappho Ode, trans. T. S. Dorsch re: Historic Day for Gays, but Twinge of Loss for an Outsider Culture
QUOTE: “There is something wonderful about being part of an oppressed community,” ... said no Jew in every extermination camp. Which really shows the difference between real persecution and the persecution touted by the grievance industry.
re Will Democrats Apologize for Slavery and Segregation? An open letter to DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Heh. It's a question that should be asked to dem candidates everywhere. For some reason I don't think that is going to happen. Demoncrats are proud to ignore their past (I'd say their present isn't any better). Even their website lies about it: http://www.democrats.org/about/our-history
And of course, nobody in the news media will bring that out. Hmm, Monday morning and everyone is refreshed and expecting the world to be reasonable and consistent again. It's a theme in many of the links and the comments.
Regarding the exiles in our own land in particular: Living in New England, and having fed on the modern theater and 19th & 20th C British writing, I have been aware this is a post-Christian culture, and have raised my children in the 1970's. It is ironic, but not unexpected, that Jewishness became accepted mainstream when it became secular, with actual religious observance being part of nostalgia and humor. Same forces at work on them. too much branding.
I never thought I was living in a Christian culture (if so, its never been obvious except in superficial ways), and why would I care whether Judaism was accepted by mainstream anything? I don't need anyone's approval. Historically, most Jews have cared very much about being accepted in American mainstream culture, or at least not rejected. Perhaps we are only disagreeing on definitions here.
Similarly, we may be quibbling over definitions, but America has had a deeply NW European Protestant set of assumptions since its founding, so that even other forms of Christianity had some heavy weather to endure to be accepted. DeToqueville, for example, notes it as overwhelming even fifty years later. One may question whether the US has done that well at being a Christian nation, but I would then ask "compared to whom?" University of Wisconsin Bans RACIST Phrase: “Everybody Can Succeed”
-- Socialism is the Philosophy of Failure Italian Schoolboys Forced to Wear Girls’ Clothes
Wait a minute. Jeans and a shirt, sneakers, etc. are girl's clothes. Why are they forcing boys into gender stereotype clothes when those clothes are optional? They are going back to the ignorant girl's clothes button on the left are they? Oh Dear--here's a thought
Would somebody please point out to the EU banking/monetary group that there is a difference between cultures who live in warm (ideal) climates and those who live in colder climates! Has anybody noticed that those cultures who must retire mid day to the shade of the backyard tree, or the hammock under the coconut palm, or whatever--those cultures manufacture less per person, provide fewer services per person, etc. Therefore, they do not have the same economic scale. Clearly, the Greeks could not/would not produce more no matter how we want them to, I know, I know this is somehow racist--but, I thought it might be fun for MF folks to start the day/week with this one! (Maybe, just maybe there is something to the weather being a part of all of this--no, not global warming !) are you f'ing kidding me? did the frito bandito piss in your cornflakes?????
supremely ironic, considering you're involved with academia, and if there's anything that produces less value and more BS, I can't imagine what it might be. Without claiming it is a cause-effect relationship, an excuse, or an indictment of anybody, it is at least a curious relationship. There are lots of reasons why Greece is it is today - one of them being their economy underperforms. Italy is one of the next Euro countries to be worried about and interestingly, manufacturing is mainly found in North Italy (https://www.google.com/maps/search/location+of+italian+manufacturers/@44.6065607,10.8309759,8z/data=!3m1!4b1) (I was unable to find a similar map of the location of Spanish manufacturing). In general, the northern European countries' economies outperform the southern ones though I found that the IMF ranks Italy above England in per capita GDP so the relationship is not as direct as it might appear (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_in_Europe_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita).
I'll get back to you in a few hours, but right now, its siesta time and I must retire to the coconut palms, and you know how lazy we are.
Why is it racist? If I was not inside an air-conditioned building, I would probably be dozing off right now too. It's human nature to conserve energy when you have reached the point of being warm, well-fed, and out of danger.

You will find the same. Catalonia and the Basque country- northern Spain- have long been the industrial power centers of Spain. Andalucia in the south has historically been an agricultural region- now agriculture plus tourism. There is a slight difference between genetically similar populations in different environments, usually in terms of disease resistance, but sometimes in IQ or metabolism. (For example, Donny, there is an enormous IQ difference between Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and Oriental Jews.) The Northern Italians will tell you that what you describe is exactly what's going on with the Southern Italians. It looks at first glance that this is what is happening throughout Europe, but that is at best only indirectly so. You might start with Steven Pinker's most recent writing (Better Angels), and beyond that, HBDchick, Greg Cochran, or James Thompson. I don't promise you'll like the answers.
there may be, and that would be the beginning of a good conversation on identity politics.
however, I am not going to lend any credibility to yet even more racist bullshit started by No. 9. as I see it, juvenile screeds like hers are best answered by mild ridicule. however, I do agree that the once vibrant classical Mediterranean civilization was destroyed by germanic and other northern european barbarians. Mandating vaccines:
Vaccines may well be the biggest thing to happen to the human race in our entire history. Beginning in the early 50's vaccines began protecting our health and saving our lives. Somewhere between 1 billion and 2 billion people wh would have died from diseases we now prevent with vaccines survived/lived thanks to vaccines. At the beginning of the 20th century about half of the children born would die from diseases we now vaccinate for. Should ignorance and superstition prevent even a single vaccination? The 2nd and 3rd greatest medical discoveries were antibiotics and hygiene and in particular sterilizing medical equipment. But these two together pale in comparison to vaccines. It is a testament to the ability of deranged bloggers and other crazies that vaccines are held in such disrespect. Where is the medical community in standing up and speaking out about this? Mr Fjord and I were talking about shingles this morning, as a friend has it.
Seems they are finding that children that are vaccinated for chicken pox tend to get shingles much earlier -- like in their 20's and it's serious, because they have not HAD chicken pox, only carry the antibodies. What % of children actually die from chickenpox? and it's not FROM chickenpox, it's a complication of it. Since I don't believe statistics anymore, I won't even bother looking it up. There is so much misinformation around vaccines and other controversial medical treatments that it is necessary to be skeptical about all of it. In general problems associated with vaccinations are in reality a health problem that the individual has. Some of these rare but genuine complications would occur with any needle prick including an IV. Their immune system rejects anything not recognized as part of their body.
As to the shingles my gut reaction is that the evidence will show that shingles occurs almost only in people who actually had the underlying illness and is not related to vaccinations. Could it be true? Maybe but it is too good a attack on vaccinations and defies logic so I'm assuming it is more misinformation put out by the looney tunes out there. Re: Texas university's VP of diversity
It seems the highest paid people in a university are the coaches and the diversity bureaucrats. That tells you what's important, and also what's not. College Sex: No, chicky-baby, the Feminists sold you a bill of goods.
White Men as Gods: Fred's Fine Rant. Snowflakes: Not resistant. Who woulda guessed? Puerto Rico: If they vote to become a state, I say we turn them down. Yeah, I don't read Fred anymore. No filters.
It isn't "white men". I think it is people of Northern European descent. They seem to be smarter, more industrious, more moderated-less inclined to violence to solve problems and more attuned to doing good morally.
I am reminded of a story a European living in Africa told: The black Africans who were flying on intra-African airlines would look into the cockpit to make sure the pilot was a white European. If he was they would fly with him, if the pilot was a black African they would get off the plane. where your race identity fails:
how does that work when you can't rely on "race" when you're competing with an individual? let's say, a black Jew who is more educated, more motivated, a a harder worker, better financed and much, much more of an aggressive asshole than you? To you it is like going to a race and the white (or black) horse wins and you become all concernd about the color of the horse and what it means if somene actually recognizes the color of the horse. To me it is simply which horse won and nothing more. I didn't make the stats, I didn't choose which horse won I am simply saying that a majority of the art, literature, medical and scientific discoveries etc. have come from people of Northern European descent. A similar arguement could be made about the contribution that jews have made to the sciences, I assume you wouldn't object to that or try to find some nefarious reason that someone acknowledged that fact.
