Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

CC Straw Poll:
Who do you support for President in 2016? http://commoncts.blogspot.com/2015/06/common-cents-straw-poll-who-do-you.html Frankly after today I've lost all interest in the 2016 election. You can't stop people who don't believe in The Rule of Law at the ballot box.
You certainly can't stop them if you don't vote against them.
Wow--Scott Walker (my choice) 54%, Ted Cruz (23%), Carly Fiorina (15%), Jeb Bush (0%), Hillary Clinton (0%). Pretty conservative poll & site.
Re Psychosurgeons:
"And for people who need them, psychosurgeries can be highly effective. Success rates are relatively high—about half of all patients who undergo anterior cingulotomy recover to completely normal levels of brain function." Half. Psychosurgeons indeed. Where is Nurse Ratched when we need her? A little laser to the brain, and away go troubles down the drain. Do we really need to draw historical parallels to things that are "ethical" because "the procedures actually work"?
Johnny Depp is "The Psychosurgeon" Now playing at a clinic near you.
One of my patients who obsessively thought for decades about assaulting others, and fairly often (1/month) actually did so, despite being under constant observation and having been evaluated by many, many skilled practitioners, elected to have psychosurgery. It has partly worked, which is a relief to her - and to everyone who deals with her, who have at least reduced anxiety about being assaulted unexpectedly.
Mile in her shoes and all that. Re: Sometimes Rush Limbaugh is sometimes right
It's amazing to me that Paul Ehrlich is treated with anything by derision. He is not in the science business but rather in the predicting business. His predictions seem to be derived from a Malthusian view and they are, like Malthus, routinely wrong. RE: No, Everything Does Not Happen for a Reason
QUOTE: No I don’t believe that everything happens for a reason, but I do believe there is meaning in how we respond to all things that happen to us, even when they are not at all good things. I don't agree with the first clause, although the last part is truth. Things do happen for reasons, but the reasons are often known only to God. We do not see creation through His eyes, nor does He allow us to see the cause and effect of all things. Except sometimes He does, for didactic reasons, or to encourage us. RE: Poll of U.S. Muslims Reveals Ominous Levels Of Support For Islamic Supremacists’ Doctrine of Shariah, Jihad
"According to the just-released survey of Muslims, a majority (51%) agreed that “Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to shariah.” " part of this is already true. islams, like Christians or Jews, have the right to arbitrate or mediate under each's own religious laws. in fact, you could contractually agree to arbitrate a commercial dispute using a water balloon duel and both the agreement to duel with water balloons and the results would be enforceable in court. two islams could agree to mediate a civil dispute (but not all disputes, e.g., a family law dispute if there are minor children involved) under an arbitration contract to apply sharia law. the arbitrator's ruling would typically (but not always) be enforceable in a US court. check out the Federal Arbitration Act, this is no shi'ite. I think the respondents to the survey are including honor killings, female genital mutilation, and apostasy in their definition of shariah.
being islams, and therefore childlike-stupid, they probably are, that's why I there are so many qualifiers on my response.
as a counterpoint, the Philippines has a family law sharia code in place, for islams only, that is consistent with its western-style constitution. re Quote from Burge via Insty: "No matter how low your opinion of Washington DC, it's nothing compared to Washington DC's low opinion of you."
Blogger "Ace" at Ace of Spades blog had this to say today: "We did not agree to be ruled like subjects. Our agreement, constructive as it was, is that we shall abide by the laws of a government assuming we have a say in the laws of that government. The Overclass which rules us has torn up that part of the agreement." Hillary Clinton’s dodginess is overpowering her message? O Mon Doo! Dodginess IS her message.
My Tesla is only good.
I have solar panels to charge it up and if I want, can get charged at supercharger at Tesla (30 minutes) for free for life of the car (Tesla has solar panels too, I understand). the article on electric cars is misrepresentative. Have to read the last paragraph to know they are referring to coal-fired electricity to charge the cars. For now, electric cars are the best possible transportation for the environment, especially if you use solar energy. And i still have electricity I sell back to the Utility company: they PAY me.! Might I ask:
Is it Fact or fiction that you got a subsidy to install the system? Does the utility pay retail or wholesale for your "extra" power? If it's retail, not much value to your fellow rate payers. Just asking. "America's runaway spending on the elderly".
All of the 2300 welfare programs of the federal government give away $1.2 trillion of our federal tax dollars to people who don't pay taxes into the system. It is essentially free stuff used by politicians to buy votes. The SS system takes in about $840 billion a year and pays out about $820 billion. The federal government has "borrowed" about $4 trillion from the SS system over the years. Does it strike anyone as odd that a system that pays for itself is somehow to be blamed for the deficit/debt while a much more expenseive system that is paid for by those who do not benefit from it is not even mentioned? Does the Sun swelling into a red giant count as global warming destroying the Earth?
