We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re Kelly: "But like everything on Fox, Kelly is controversial. Viewers and critics are often befuddled, because they never know where she stands."
They're confused by a news host who isn't a predictable partisan hack.
IS: These IS stories are so grotesque and beyond the pale, to my world, that I admit to sometimes wondering, if they are propaganda, made up by MI6.
please, never read anything about the Holocaust, there are already too many Deniers. I'm not shi'iting you about this.
apologists for or supporters of IS are allied with demonic forces.
The videos are allegedly recruitment tools. I doubt even the Reich produced the equivalent of propaganda along the lines of “Come, lets destroy, rape, enslave, and murder babies together. If you join us, you can be a depraved perv(pedaphile), too.”
Contrast that with Western recruitment which is about service, character, and humanitarianism.
There is automation and then there is digital automation. Of course, we expect churn and in the past it has been a good thing ; we certainly don’t want stasis. That said, it’s not a guarantee it will be in the future. I just don’t know, maybe what we are seeing in this morphing economy is just growing pains and will get worked out.
The information revolution ( meta data), instant global communication, the explosion in digital automation, and logistics are all very disruptive. We are all still trying to come to grips with what it portends for the relationship between individuals and employers, community, government and the economic well being of what we used to identify as the middle class, and not just the American middle class. I have yet to hear a public figure attempt to discuss it with fresh insights as opposed to 19th century ideologies.
Walter Russel Mead: “We instinctively understand that the higher productivity of the information revolution ought to transform the daily lives of ordinary people in a host of beneficial ways, and that a richer and more productive society ought to mean wealthier and more secure middle class families, but we don’t yet understand the mix of political policies, economic techniques, social values and individual habits and choices that can make the revolution pay off. We see an explosive rise in great fortunes, and we see glittering towers of corporate and individual success, but we don’t see that prosperity spreading out the way we’d like it to. In the meantime, the insidious consequences of the rise of super-empowered fortunes and individuals with hundreds of millions to throw into political and social campaigns make us uneasy, and rightly so.”
Yabut at 84, I'm still brushing my teeth (all 32 of them) with the same old toothbrush design and same old tooth paste formulation, and still combing what's left of my hair with the same old comb design, and still drinking my orange juice from the same old kind of glass, and still eating my Cheerios in the same kind of bowl, and still showering with the same kind of soap and same kind of washcloth as I did as a kid in the '40s. Tech revolution? What tech revolution?
My third case of diagnosed Lyme disease this week and human Lyme vaccine locked up tighter than Jenny McCartys bra strap.
And they still won't let anyone harm or even frighten the herds of deer roaming around my town. I've looked out my window and seen so many deer that I've thought to myself " If those buggers were Holsteins my Danish cousins would consider me a wealthy man".
I'm waiting now for my third letter from the town's health department, complete with a questionnaire that I must fill out regarding how I contracted this "infectious disease". Makes me wonder, are there people who wake up in bed with a deer and say "Oh no, I forgot to use protection!".
Where do you live?
I have rellies that still live in Jersey. They all have lyme, also.
Last I heard there were so many black bear in Jersey they were trying to entice out of state hunters to buy bear licenses by giving away free cookbooks.
You can't make this stuff up. Unfortunately, everyone has to suffer.
South of Boston on the Irish Riviera. Weymouth.
Privately nothing can be done about the deer, can't shoot them, can't poison them, can't even throw rocks at them. I've had so many deer on my property at one time that if I could have shot, skinned and dressed them all and popped them into the freezer I would have had a lifetime supply of meat. Though personally, I'm not fond of the taste.
The town does nothing, too many bleeding heart jackasses; deer are cute and noble. They don't even post warnings about Lyme at the park entrance.
Good for you that you don’t have to worry about the future or whether your great grand children will have jobs. I apparently lack vision because I just don’t get how flea markets, beaders, and aroma therapy candle shops will make up for the jobs that generate “real wealth”. Maybe we could stand around all day working for the government, giving each other flu shots? I just don’t see how dead end service jobs, stoop labor, or government jobs are going to make up for the significant revenues or drive the need for infrastructure or provide the resources for infrastructure.
Many of the most profitable companies don’t employ many people compared to what we used to see in the past. Google for example generates a lot of revenue but not a lot of jobs($1M/ per employee in 2010) https://signalvnoise.com/posts/2283-ranking-tech-companies-by-revenue-per-employee . Did you know that the technology exists for… CREWLESS 13,000,000 cu ft ….container cargo ships? Lots of jobs are endangered species.
The economy seems to be two sectors: the one where small, midsize, and regional businesses engage in something akin to capitalism and the one that is corporatist, sectors that are subsidized and or protected by government (bailouts, the revolving door between regulators and corporations) or who often benefit from government imposed high fixed costs that undermine smaller competitors.
The NY Times divides it up this way:
“A rift is opening up. The first, globalized sector is producing a lot of the productivity gains, …….but it is not producing a lot of the jobs………… The second more protected sector is producing more (dead end service) jobs, but not as many productivity gains. The hypercompetitive globalized economy generates enormous profits, while the second, less tradable economy is where more Americans actually live.”
Apologies, I wasn't wearing my readers. This post should have been in reply to #3.
Of course marijuana is going to be slammed as a medicinal: Big Pharma hates the competition! They will, however spend millions to perform multiple testings to keep their big moneymakers like SSRIs (Prozac and its ilk) rolling in the dough, despite strong questions over whether they even pass placebo testing. And millions more settling lawsuits from survivors of users who committed suicide or murder under the influence of such drugs---Dylan Roof, anyone?
And virtually all these studies used older, weaker versions of the plant and most had to be performed in secret, because MJ is ILLEGAL under federal law.
In an ironic way I find myself agreeing that if Dylan Roof had been given medical pot he probably wouldn't have shot 9 people. He would have, like most pot smokers, failed in all his goals and slept until noon everyday and when he woke up couldn't have remembered whatever he thought he must do in life. But I am not a believer that prescribed drugs cause mentally ill people to commit crimes. I prefer the more logical conclusion that mentally ill people do strange things and prescription drugs simply don't always work to prevent this. It is the wrong conclusion to blame the drugs once you understand that the reason they were prescribed is because the person is crazy, looney tunes, mad as a hatter.
I don't know what made Dylan Roof do this terrible act but I suspect the race baiting by our president, the DOJ and the left might have convinced him that indeed whites in America are under attack. One of his comments in his manifesto was that blacks are raping white women. He is correct black rape of white women is virtually an epidemic while white rape of black women is almost unheard of. Did anyone think all this race baiting and excusing of black violence againt whites would NOT cause a problem? When charm city mayor Stephanie Rawlings is voted 'America's mayor' after her disasterous handling of the riots you have to wonder if the powers that be approve of what she is doing.
..."his comments in his manifesto was that blacks are raping white women."
Not only was he batshit crazy, but he was a coward too, as are all killers of the unarmed innocent in 'gun free zones'.
If he was so concerned about "white rape" then why kill a bunch of (mostly) older women and men while praying? He should have started walking the streets of any communist hellhole, otherwise known as a democrat run urban area.
Re: Bobby Jindal
Horrors! An Indian who wants to be an American! That's so old fashioned. Instead the old immigrants who wanted to come to the US to become Americans, the multiculturalist idea is that immigrants should retain their national identity apart for an American identity because the American identity is so awful. Immigrants used to come to the US to be Americans. Their culture added to the US culture. Now multiculturalists think they should stay steeped in their own separate culture which just serves to balkanize the US. Another stupid idea from the Left.
Re keep the Confederate Flag Flying:
The nutcase was no more influenced by the Confederate flag to kill blacks than he was by a box of Dunkin' Donuts.
However the Left and their SJW (social justice warriors) have made the meme stick, to my utter amazement.
The speed at which companies are stopping the sales of CSA flags is mind boggling. It shows that the threat of being accused of being a hating racist is still a potent weapon. Organizations still cower in fear of it being turned on them.
If anyone thinks banning the Stars and Bars is going to end crazy shooting sprees, they are indeed either naive or fools. But they are not naive or fools. When the next mass murder takes place, they can demand Confederate statues be taken down, or the banning of the Gadsden flag, or even the displaying of the Stars and Stripes if they were to be so bold.
Once you cave to these types of demands it will never end. There is always one more thing to ban.
They are not waiting for the "next" incident, calls to exspung all Confederate associated statues, University names and mascots has already started.
Does "Stalin and Lenin College of Virginia" have the right ring?
Re: Getting the South Wrong
The best description of the difference in the way the North and the South view race I've heard is (speaking of the bad old days): Southerners allowed blacks to get close but not advance. In the North, they were allowed to advance but not get close. In the South, even families who were not well off might hire a black maid or nanny with the result that many southern kids grew up with black care takers with whom they sometimes developed very close relationships. This didn't happen in the North. I believe this is a contributing factor to the racial riots that have happened in the North but not the South. The fact that blacks were allowed to advance in the North covered up their true racism which was just as bad or worse then that in the South.
When my dad was in grad school in the '50s, a white Southern student once told him (referring to blacks), "In the South, we love 'em as individuals and hate 'em as a race. In the North you love 'em as a race and hate 'em as individuals."
My parents would never mistreat or be disrespectful to anybody, black or white. I grew up with maids in our house. Some of them would visit and give me gifts of figs or pralines. In fact I remember one occasion we visited the home of one of our maids (don't remember the purpose of the visit). While we all had affection at some level for some of our maids, my parents thought blacks had a place that they should stay there. In the '60s, I think those sorts of relationships and attitudes were fairly common.
Certainly, that's not a totally positive picture of racial attitudes, but I think impacted my attitude toward race positively. The question I always had was exactly what is the black's place and why should they stay there. I never got an answer that made sense to me.
It's a lot easier to deal honestly and respectfully with someone as an individual than a member of a group.
Sums it up well. I've lived on both coasts and both sides of the Mason-Dixon. Boston is by far the most racist city I've seen.

www.proudrebel.com has them, but the site is overwhelmed with visits.
I've lived in Mississippi, basically, my entire life. I've never had any particular attachment to the Confederate battle flag, and actually thought a flag our State used between 1861-94 was far more attractive than our current one. See for yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Mississippi#/media/File:Flag_of_Mississippi_(1861-1894).svg I believe in the late 80s or early 90s, the choice to change the flag was put before the voters and I voted to go back to the flag linked to above.
However, I resent to the UTMOST a change being pushed upon us by politicians pandering to a bunch of twitter-twit SJWs in an effort to sate their never-sated outrage(!). My wife advised me a moment ago that New Orleans's Mayor (D) Landrieu is now proposing removing the statue of R.E. Lee from Lee Square.
The Left is the American Taliban. Nothing will EVER satisfy them because they've a hatred in their hearts and a hole in their soul than can't be filled by anything of this earth.

Dr. Morner says the claims of sea level rise are a hoax.
"Sea level rise" is so easily rebuttable. Just go to the NOAA sea level charts on their site. By federal law, NOAA must keep track of sea levels, since in most places mean high water defines the legal boundary between public and private property. You will see that that the rise in sea levels has been the same for at least a century and is only a miniscule fraction of what is being claimed by the alarmists. In my area, it's something like 5 inches per century. And remember, the official figures take into account not only the actual rise in levels, but the subsidence of the adjacent land mass (which is the main reason why it is different in different places).
civil discovery -- as in burying the opposition in paperwork -- is out of control, abuses are so common that they're no longer considered abuses but a routine tactic. repeat this for procedural motions whose main, if not only, value is delay because in some courts it can take 4 months for a hearing.
big firms use cases as a kind of post-graduate training grounds for essentially useless new attorney hires. paid for by the client, and where the client is an insurance firm, spread over the insurer's customer base.
overbilling, as in billing three hours of work in a single hour. done just by opening an email or answering a phone or reviewing some papers. I could look at a client billing and tell you exactly how and where this is done but could you?
TrueFact: we were in a trial, three sides, so just a few of us in court that day. the judge interrupted the trial to hear some procedural issue for another case. at least 30 lawyers plus client (mostly insurance) reps from all over the US were there, of whom only two spoke, the entire matter took less than five minutes. cardboard cutouts of Matlock would have been just as effective. but every penny, from "review of motion" to "prepare for motion" to "appear at motion" to "consult with client" to airline tickets, hotel costs, breakfast, taxi/rental all billed back to the client, meaning, you.
I well remember sitting in asbestos depositions with roughly 90 other lawyers in a hotel conference room in Baton Rouge where there was one designated "lead" examiner and no other attorney asked any questions of the deponent. The parade of Plaintiffs went on for 6 weeks.
Doom: Warmists Proclaim Collapse Of Society By 2040
"Huffpo Writer: I Will Not Have Children So I Will Not Spread My ‘White Privilege’ Biologically"
Ah, but "White Privilege" isn't spread biologically. It is spread culturally. And anyone can adopt "White Privilege" by accepting the ancient liberties of the English-speaking people as their deepest beliefs. By accepting secure private property rights, equality before the rule of law, individual liberties anyone of any ethnicity can enjoy the "White Privilege".
It does, however, lead to the adoption of certain "white culture": a list of values, such as “promoting independence, self expression, personal choice, individual thinking and achievement,”
The only advantage or "privilege" Whites have is there isn't a concerted, organized effort to steer Whites away from the cultural values that lead to economic and societal success. Well, actually their is...
Well, society may collapse but if it does, it will be from the apparent fact that Obama, the Pope and many other "leaders" have gone batshit crazy.
JK, I disagree only in that it's not just Obummer and the Pope who are nuts, but there are a significant number of destroyers and useful idiots who are supporting the current lunacy.
