Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Is it time to acknowledge and thank the Muslims for their contribution to arming the American soldier with the correct and best sidearm?
The Moro Wars in the Philippines at the beginning of the last century lead to the development of the Colt 1911 .45 caliber pistol which then replaced the .38 caliber revolver in the Army. The .38 was found to be ineffective with insufficient "stopping power" against the Moro tribesmen. Today the Pentagon wants to replace the M9 9mm Beretta. Reason? Insufficient stopping power. Back in the 80's when the military replaced the Colt 1911 with a 9mm most of the disagreement was that the 9mm didn't have enough stopping power. But the wiser heads (flatter anyway) thought it was good enough and standardizing the ammunition with our NATO allies was a sufficient benefit. (Well, if the goal of the process is keeping the quartermasters back at the base happy. Perhaps.) After real life intruded in the mountains of Afghanistan and the Warfighters repeated the same unhappiness with the performance of the Beretta against Muslim fanatics. Here we go again. I think that until the day that we can put a Laser or a Phaser on the hip of the American soldier the Colt 1911 pistol is still the best option. the M1911 replaced the M1909 .45 revolver.
I quote Pournelle's Law all the time. It very succinctly explains how every bureaucracy works. It also explains why minimal-government libertarianism is the only political philosophy that makes any sense to me.
"Army Plans to Start Replacing M9 Pistol in 2018"
They also planned to replace the M16 about 20 years ago but still haven't. They'll play with some other pistols and calibers and come to no decision. Unless they start considering new calibers such as 5.7mm, none of them will penetrate body armor. The pistol is worthless on a battlefield. "The pistol is worthless on a battlefield."
One of my soldiers would disagree vehemently! He always maintained that if an enemy soldier ever got inside our command post, I could throw my pistol at him. Yep - when given the choice, I decided to stuff my pouches with grenades rather than a pistol.
For Marine unit, a lost reputation in Afghanistan
Not shocked that ARMY Special Forces Command leadership did everything possible to destroy a Marine Special Forces unit. See Pournelle's Iron Law for explanation. I had thought that Norway, Switzerland, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand were conisedered advanced countries.
Shhhh! If you you check your privilege and stop imposing your patriarchal values on the light-bringer, you would realize his statements are always true in spirit.
QUOTE: I would say this applies to the Republican Party as well but we also don't seem to be advancing party interests, either. We're advancing neither interests nor goals. Ace of Spades neglects the possibility that those who gained control of the Republican Party are actually fellow travelers of the other party. Almost all non-profits have been taken over by Progressives who defy the donors original intent. The efforts to require college religious groups to allow no believers into the leadership is the same. Walmart had a huge debacle going "organic" because a Democratic operative got into their C-level. Fortunately for the latter, the market forced Walmart leadership to correct, which is why the Left hate the market. Look at the people who ran McCain's campaign. If instead the managers had been sent over from the DNC, what would the new managers done differently to sabotage the campaign and Palin? Yet those "operatives" are still getting high level jobs in Republican campaigns. One thing I neglected, the "operatives" of both parties graduated from the same indoctrination centers and work more from a "like me" premise than well thought out ideological one.
"Success" to a RINO campaign operative doesn't consist of winning elections; it consists of lining his own pockets with the maximum amount of boodle, while remaining acceptable to the talking-head Sunday news shows. That way, he'll have a part-time job before the next sucker hires him for another election.
Look at Romney's "Project ORCA" get-out-the-vote database. They spent, I read, some $50M on the thing and it failed as badly as Obamacare. Romney got robbed - not only of the election, but also of his own (and our) money wasted on the ORCA boondoggle. If the GOP wants to win this next election, they'll need to find, and eliminate, every person who worked on McCain's and Romney's campaigns. Those are the people who know how to lose elections, and that's what they are going to do AGAIN. re RIDING THE RUSSIAN RAILS

http://www.shorpy.com/node/19757 Speaking of the Benedict option, there are two kinds of post-Christians: those who have completely forgotten Christianity or never knew anything about it, and those who think Christianity has succeeded and are grateful for the fact. The strategy of retreat and retrenchment might be the same in both cases however. http://goo.gl/C4k2H7
I think US evangelicals have been pining for this condition.
Of course they're delighted. They willingly aided these changes. Just another group that wants to be oppressed. |
