Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, June 13. 2015Disney: People actually pay to go to this hideous place? Why? ‘Happiest Place On Earth’ Is Also One of the Most Expensive - A hundred and twenty-five bucks to get into Disney World? Why would anybody waste precious life time and money to go this completely phony craphole? Real life is free and far more interesting. Heck, Disney movies are pretty darn good though. Celebrate A Dream Come True Parade Magic Kingdom. They do this twice daily.Theater, I suppose, so fine. The recorded music (sounds like modern evangelical church music) comes out of loudspeakers like North Korea. How do they find enough stoner losers to work at this place? Well, it is Florida, and stoner losers with jobs is better than without them however retarded the jobs are. Our lefty friend Carl Hiassen captured the reality of it perfectly. He did not overlook the air-conditioning units inside those suits. To each his own.

the Tragic Kingdom was more appealing to me as a jr. high schooler.
those were the days of the "E ticket" ride. I had neighbors who went to Disneyland and/or Disneyworld for every vacation. I understood it when their kids were young but they still did it when they were grown.
Turns out that they went because it felt "safe" to them. When I heard that Disney World had plastic flowers, I lost interest.
Disney Land, on the other hand, brings backwarm memories of Annette Funicello. I pretty much agree with your sentiment, NJ. OTOH it seems to be a very well run business, and people are still free to choose how to spend their discretionary income. So, on the whole I have no problem with it.
Mrs. feeblemind's thinking parallels Whitehall's. She hates corporate Disney but has a soft spot for Disneyland, having gone there often as a child. Free, unlimited transportation throughout the park (someone has to service those things, after they've been bought, likely financed)
Nightly parades (again, the floats need service, as well as the performers needing to be paid) Topiarys and landscaping, trash collection, building maintenance... Good grief, have you ever seen the support required just for the attraction rides themselves!?! The operation is enormous, staggering even, if you consider it in detail. And it costs money to run. I dislike Disney for several reasons, but the money aspect, well, last time I was there a couple years ago, I felt like we got our money's worth. Disney is now off our list forefver, but not because it's fake but because of the way they treated the IT workers who they fired and replaced with H1B's. We will not patronize companies that back list former employees whose only crime is to tell the truth.
So you're adding Disney to your list that includes (at least) IBM, HP, Apple, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Microsoft, your local electrical utility (likely), your local doctor (almost certainly - offshore transcription service and/or claims processing agency), virtually every insurance company in the US, Your bank (if they do not offshore work, they use software produced by a company that did), your State Government (contract employees), Sony Pictures, pretty much every animation studio....
It's no secret in the IT industry that once work gets to be routine, it gets off-shored, or farmed out to contract agencies that use H1B workers. I agree with tanstafl, they treated their American workers like crap and brought in foreign replacement workers to handle their IT. disgraceful.
To each his own.
I have never been to Disney World. I have been to Disney Land, with 2 young boys. I have an interest in seeing it because so many of my friends have gone and are stunned that I have not ever been there. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, but my friends say I am. I have 2 sets of friends who go for 3 days every year. Because they like it - not for their kids, who are grown. If your reason for not going is because of how they treated their IT staff, then you should boycott most major corporations in the US. That story is fairly standard across many US corporations, but you probably haven't heard half of the stories. Every company takes steps to maintain its position and place, as well as its revenues and profits. If their transgressions are bad enough and well-known enough, I will usually not utilize their services if I can avoid it. But doing so means making uncomfortable choices, in many cases. I have no issue with Disney World. Not a huge fan, but hey-we all seek entertainment. What you enjoy isn't necessarily what I enjoy. Ever been to a punk rock concert and joined the mosh pit? I have, many times. It's not for everyone, but I really loved it back in the day. Disney was only good when Walt was alive and, even then, ended its best years when "Zorro" was cancelled.
if you grew up in Florida it is almost mandatory that you have been to Disney World at least once. I actually have painful memories of Disney World because that is where my dad would take my sister, brother and me for part of our 2 week yearly visitation after the divorce...I wonder if divorce is what drives the artificial happiness for sale at Disney?
As far as the workers, I'd say don't come down on them as stoner losers. They are usually very clean cut, friendly and working hard. I find it hard to believe they are just stoner losers. The teens that work at my local Chik fil A are similar. Not a tattoo, nose ring, strange hair anywhere and unfailingly polite. "Why would anybody waste precious life time and money to go this completely phony craphole".
Can't think of anything at the moment that has ever been stated as accurate.......................................................or eloquently. |
