Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Walter E. Williams: To call any science settled is sheer idiocy.
While all science is considered tentative, we can be fairly well certain that the Earth moves. (See Galileo, 1633.) are you really claiming there's a privileged inertial frame of reference? you live in the 19th century and understand nothing about science.
That's merely one perception from one frame of reference. It is just as true to say the university is moving around us.
Jillian Kay Melchior: Why Liberals Oppose Over-the-Counter Birth Control ... In fact, unwanted pregnancies could decline as much as 25 percent, according to a new study released in February by the University of California–San Francisco, and nonprofit Ibis Reproductive Health.
Oh gee whiz. QUOTE: Foster et al., Potential public sector cost-savings from over-the-counter access to oral contraceptives, Contraception 2015: In a scenario assuming no out-of-pocket costs for the over-the counter pill, an additional 11–21% of low-income women will use the pill, resulting in a 20–36% decrease in the number of women using no method or a method less effective than the pill, and a 7–25% decrease in the number of unintended pregnancies, depending on the level of use and any effect on contraceptive failure rates. That assumes no out-of-pocket costs, meaning it is covered by insurance. The reason most Liberals oppose the measure is because over-the-counter contraception won't be covered by many insurance plans as they are now under ObamaCare. Most have already said they will sign on to the measure if coverage is guaranteed. Exactly how does it make sense to require a woman to go to a doctor and take up his time (even if he doesn't perform a pelvic exam) and then go to a pharmacy and take up a pharmacists time to fill the prescription in order to get around paying approximately $9/month (or $4.50/month if she gets her partner to share the cost)?
I thought women wanted the government out of their bedroom. Get out of their bedroom but leave the cash on the dresser.
mudbug: Exactly how does it make sense to require a woman to go to a doctor and take up his time
A doctor's visit is probably no longer considered necessary for most women, so just be sure over-the-counter birth control is still to be included in insurance plans, and you will have widespread support. In any case, Melchior misread the study, as well as misrepresenting liberal objections. You thoughtfully ignored my other point.
JK Brown expanded correctly on it above. It's a good thing women can take control of their lives now! I find the being dependent on the government so liberating. Don't you? mudbug: You thoughtfully ignored my other point.
Didn't think it required a response. mudbug: I thought women wanted the government out of their bedroom. That doesn't put the government in the bedroom. Making sure birth control is covered by insurance guarantees women have access, even if they are poor. It's remains their choice if they use it or not.

I guess you still don't think it requires a response. But then I see your point. It is very self explanatory.
The purpose of insurance is to indemnify a portion of loss. Since birth control costs are elective and predictable, it becomes a cost sharing rather than indemnification. If a person's insurance is subsidized by the government (you and me), then you and I are paying for it. It may be their choice whether they use it or not, it is not yours or my choice whether to pay for some women's birth control. You and I are responsible for removing a risk from someone else's sexual activity. But you have a point. That sexual activity may not take place in a bed room.

mudbug: Since birth control costs are elective and predictable, it becomes a cost sharing rather than indemnification.
That is correct. However, the study Melchior mangled above shows that if oral contraceptives are provided at low or no cost, then it will prevent a large number of unwanted pregnancies among the poor. mudbug: It may be their choice whether they use it or not, it is not yours or my choice whether to pay for some women's birth control. Just like it's not your individual choice whether they put a stop sign on your street and make you pay for it, then have the gall to force you to stop when you come to it.

With co-pays running $20 or $40 to see that doc/specialist, the $$ to buy birth control without insurance would be neglible. Also, it would be OTC and available for handout at any number of non-profits that supposedly help with 'women's health.' Just like some places give out free condoms. You could do the same with BCP.
MissT: With co-pays running $20 or $40 to see that doc/specialist, the $$ to buy birth control without insurance would be neglible.
Birth control costs more than $20 a year. Many poor women don't have a copay for the doctor's visit. The cost of birth control varies considerably. MissT: Also, it would be OTC and available for handout at any number of non-profits that supposedly help with 'women's health.' Non-profits don't have the funds necessary to provide for everyone in need. I take it you are unfamiliar with Title X family planning services, a large, generous pot of federal money that local health departments and NGOs access to provide free contraceptives. STD testing etc regardless of income. Though with the contraceptive mandate, mandatory medicaid coverage for contraception, etc, it might be a duplicative program that needs to be axed.

So, if a woman is under the influence of alcohol, and says 'yes', that's not real consent because of the alcohol?
What happens if we apply that to driving. The crash is not your fault because you were drunk and didn't know better? Breitbart: American-Africans can do no wrong.
Actually, the case was widely reported by Baltimore media. Seven have been arrested, one charged with attempted murder as an adult. Friends have distributed fliers that read, "Please help our neighbor." http://www.wbaltv.com/news/another-teenager-charged-as-adult-in-beating-of-dundalk-man/32961982 This discussion fits nicely with another link in today's list:
Minnesota Teachers Revolt Against 5 Years of ‘White Privilege’ Training Here's a quote from the article: QUOTE: Curriculum changes, however, were not at the top of their list. Instead, St. Paul schools were required to revise discipline policies in order to cease suspending black students, instead punishing them via “time outs” from the classroom, along with school officials “forgiving or ignoring” violent behavior. “The result has been general chaos throughout the district, with far too many students out of control because they know there are no real consequences for their actions.” As a result of the disciplinary changes, students run wild in the hallways, teachers have “secret knocks” for students who want admission into classrooms, and the number of students attending non-district schools has ballooned. It is, in short, a nightmare. Most students don’t even feel safe going to the bathroom. Michael Bastasch: NOAA Fiddles With Climate Data To Erase The 15-Year Global Warming ‘Hiatus’
Waving your hands is not a convincing argument. You have to actually look at the study to determine whether the adjustments are justified. Or wait to see if the results are validated by further studies. The warmies are desperate. The AGW scam is a good one and has opened up government coffers wider than previous left wing scams have ever been able to do. It must be saved at all costs. You would think public fraud by a prominent government organization that was once considered at least honest if not holding high standards, would be shamed and shameful. You would think this kind of manipulation of data and facts wouldbe done behind closed doors and at least some attempt made to hide it. But no! This is what we have come to, kind of like Russia in te Lenin years where the government lied to your face and you had no choice but to applaud them for it. The proof is the number of dedicated phonies who try to prop up this big lie. They will say anything, any lie, any insult to those who have not yet drunk the kool-aid. It is actually fun to watch. What will they say or do next? Perhaps demand that the first people who stop applauding these lies should be thrown in a gulag. Perhaps fired from their jobs for disagreeing with the AGW commissars. Don't you understand yet? We must all live in the cold dark caves so that Russia, China and India can be allowed to continue their dramatic increased use of fossil fuels and all to save the earth don'tcha know. Do not question authority, do not be the first comrade to stop applauding and do not object as the warmies continue to loot the treasury.

I don't suppose you all recall the Jewish fellow who paid 25% of ACLU budget for more than 20 years? Now we see another case of members of the Jewish community developing non-profit groups to attack Christians--Weinstein! Sorry Donny "facts is facts" -- some Jewish people really want to destroy the Christian tradition, or power, or whatever. you know by now you're on the Special Action List, for when we righteously take back what is ours and openly rule the world. but I have the power to move you down a few slots, maybe onto page two -- if you make a token sacrifice at the Temple.
Minnesota Teachers: Libs are the enemies of blacks--don't want them educated, don't want them to learn how to get along in the greater society with people not like them.

the usual histrionics over what appears to be a harmless bill. actual text of the bill always go to the source, rather than bloggers, all of whom steal text from each other. now, what's wrong with the bill? Dear Donny:
NEVER, never diminish yourself and your community like that--never give any opportunity for wrongful myths to grow! We just have to deal with a few unpleasant facts--not destroy anyone, or any one tradition. |
