Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

How anyone could use the phrase "cash-strapped" when referring to American universities is beyond me.
Supermarkets: One of the theories of the demise of the Soviet Union was the VCR. Think of all the boot legged movies with scenes from Western grocery stores.
The comment thread had some good posts. See real life in Russia currently at:

You beat me to it! The contrast between the 1990 Soviet supermarket and the modern "Matrix" one is startling. The reason for the difference? Blindingly obvious: 1990 supermarket - state-owned and -operated. Matrix supermarket - privately-owned and -operated corporate chain. From what I have seen, Russian supermarkets are now nicer, and the prices cheaper, than in American supermarkets.
A tale of two countries. From what I have seen, Russian supermarkets are now nicer, and the prices cheaper, than in American supermarkets.
A tale of two countries. Oh I forgot to mention, Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says the problem with America is we have "too many choices" in terms of what to buy. Compare and contrast the Russian grocery store video with the "shopping with the kids" scene from Mr Mom (1983!! sheesh)
An additional bonus is that Americans get their exercise shopping or at least it feels like I walk two blocks just to get a gallon of milk at my local Market Basket. Someone should use the linked footage as an example of Lefty Paradise. VDH:
Actually, if you are a marxist, everything is going "right". I read this quote from Orwell yesterday: "Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship." George Orwell Why We're fat compared to a chimpanzee. Sorry, but I'd like to read some "studies" that don't state the obvious. Animals, unless domesticated or kept in zoos are subsistence existence. Humans are now so civilized that less than 1% of the population feeds the entire world, increasing parasite class and low intelligence beings that can't survive without assistance. Leaves us lots of time for some of us to bitch, whine and break down everything that makes us "civilized'. And for rampaging jihadists to rape and pillage and behead with impunity. Symptom of a fourth turning, what is old must be destroyed to usher in the new. Also while reading that chimpanzee article, I was struck by the fact that certain people lacking intelligence invite these creatures into their homes as "pets".
Only to have their arms and faces ripped off, eventually. I never turn my back on large domesticated bovine creatures (not carnivorous or even omnivorous) due to the fact that you don't know what drives the impulse for them to attack. Donkeys and mules will attack and kill coyotes, dogs and predators that attack their flock... and their sheer body strength is enough to overtake a human with all his "mental strength". Unless you run really really fast. (still not faster than a quadruped). RE: The Founders’ Model of Welfare Actually Reduced Poverty
my dogs have a better grasp of history and constitutional theory than bloggers like West, and they have none at all. 1. supporters of a political model that depended on guaranteeing the import of slaves and then afterwards guaranteeing slavery has no business opining on what might or might not be a stable model of welfare. because when 18% of the population (1790 census) was a slave, you don't have any "stable model" and what you do have was headed for a catastrophic fail. 2. the founders are talking about the limited jurisdiction of the federal government, not the general powers of the states. and don't bring up that dumbass Davy Crockett handwringer because he was an idiot and the story is actually a counterexample. Donnie,
Thank you for your on-going "spew" of opinionated ignorance. Without your fine example, many here would lack such a perfect role model of how NOT to think, act or write. Mr. Cohen's article titled" All is not as it was for Jews in America" is one of THE BEST articles regarding the events, trends of the last 70 years that I have read. I would love to write to Mr. Cohen and thank him. Unfortunately, if you want to post a comment to his article on that site--you have to send money! And, perhaps therein lies a greater irony.
Donny: what I want to say to you is this: It is because I know that I have the courage and the love to stand and defend, that I am also able to be the criticize--to tell you of my experiences, so that you and all of your community can understand what to do to prevent what we both see as coming! It is not brute force, and bullying Donny--but, your community must look inward to those among you who abuse the outsiders. Too much. Mr. Cohen's work is critical to this understanding. Thank you Wife, for your insightful, well-considered and dare I say Christianly criticism of the Tribe. But the blogger Cohen is wrong. There have always been Jew haters in this country. The ease of comment on the internet gives the appearance that anti-Semitism is on the rise, but seriously, they're still the same shrill, loser nobodies they've always been.
As for us, we'll never change. Never. The evidence that the UCC and other Christian denominations (as well as political groups) moving in the direction of BDS are completely insane is this: even if Israel were entirely unjustified in its actions concerning the Palestinians, it would still not be in the top 100 situations of oppression around the globe. The "oppression" the Palestinians live under, compared to situations in half the countries of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, and South America is of no account.
Therefore we must conclude that they are concerned about the Palestinians for some reason other than the oppression. Among the likely candidates 1. Regular old-fashioned distaste for Jews, reconfigured kaleiescopically but nothing new. 2. A counter-reaction because evangelical Christians support Israel, so of course they could never be right 3. A princess-and-the-pea competition to illustrate one's moral refinement by being offended at ever-smaller prejudices 4. A dislike of icky military success by a Western nation. More than one may apply, of course. And remember, this criticism applies even if Israel is in the wrong. If she is more than 50% justified in her acts, the possible explanations for supporting the Palestinians become even more pathological. |
