Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

We wouldn't need the word "prose" if it weren't for poetry.

Inside the Mind of Poetry. A quote:



I believe that to read poetry, one must have a mind of poetry. You must enter a state where you come to understand meaning-resistant arrangements of language as having their own kind of meaning. It’s quite similar to those Magic Eye posters from the ‘90s: If you haven’t figured out how to look at them, you can’t believe that anyone really sees the dolphin. (This metaphor has its limits, making learned skill seem like an on/off conversion; too, with poetry, even when you’ve mastered “the trick,” not everyone sees the same thing.)



"Mind of poetry." I like that. A floaty state of mind to get into.

I think part of the "Mind of Poetry" is having enough time to savor the words. I can dash through prose and enjoy it, but poetry requires some quiet, no interruptions and maybe a cup of tea.

Poetry isn't all that fuzzy and warm.

Theodore Roethke "Last Class" might be a good read to check it out against. The first several pages googlebook'd

Interesting 'news' story.

Seventy-two killed resisting gun confiscation in Boston!

From the story:

Boston – National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed by elements of a Para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.

I cannot read poetry with any enjoyment, but I can listen to it with great enjoyment.

Perhaps that's the point.
