We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed---and gazed---but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
Once upon a time, we got poetry that scanned and rhymed, had insights and made sense. Now all we get is badly type-set, unintelligible, badly written prose.
It has been argued on the basis of reaction time measurements that average IQ's in Britain (and by implication the West) have fallen by one full standard deviation (15 pts) since the mid to late 1800's. What that means is that the average white IQ today when adjusted to 19th Century norms is only 85. That certainly explains our modern problems, and the apparent lack of genius in our modern world.
It has also been argued that there have been no basic technological breakthroughs since the 1960's, only clever adaptations of existing technology.
All in all, signs of a culture that is played out.
Thank you so very much for this effort to reinforce the quality of life.
There were wolves at the cave entrance, there have been barbarians at the gates, there are robo cops at the door... not much new there.
Curiously, before I sat down to the digital world, I looked out a real world window and saw (not ten thousand, just a few) daffodils along a margin of a harbor. The jocund company is there if we will look.
The fight today before us may be a fight to retain individuality in the face of the digital collective mind. To remember, to strive for, the bliss of solitude.
Again, thank you so much for this wonderful reminder.
