We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I’m not going to paint this post with pictures or videos, but just let the words stand on their own. Today is Yom Hashoah, the day of remembrance of the millions of Jews singled out for slaughter in World War II and the heroes who fought back. Everyone says “never again”, but we all know that is a hollow pretense for almost all who say it. We have watched mass slaughters, including some specifically targeted against discrete ethnic or religious groups, and done little or nothing. As always, almost all say it’s not their business or they don’t want to get involved or similar. So, where does that really leave the Jews of Israel who are daily, openly threatened with extinction by MidEast fanatics who are gathering the means to do so, and getting closer? It leaves the Jews of Israel to do everything possible within its limited persuasion and power to protect itself. That’s the simple truth of the matter. And, the other simple truth of the matter is that the enemies of Israel have so infected this administration in Washington that it is speeding and easing the day of confrontation, in effect and in direct consequences of Washington’s weakness.
It is not surprising that some Jews in the US go along, either out of comforts or lack of ever actually feeling the wolf’s breath. There have always been such. And, although fate has not been kind to them in the past, they are an infection that is not due any excuses for their perfidy. These are simple truths. We will all face the violent outcome and consequences -- regardless of religion or national background -- either by fallout or the burning of our souls in the hell deserved for cowards. Or, we can be more forthright and outspoken and involved in doing all we can, really, to turn this administration away from utter capitulation and the prospective presidential candidates from any shadow of such policies.
"Never again" did not turn out to mean never again will the decent people of the world allow a genocide. It turned out to mean never again will we elect anyone from the Right. So they can comfort themselves that they never sold out, really. They are still staunch, courageous, and determined, just as their parents promised.

You're right and I'm glad that you posted this. I heard a quote on the radio today from Albert Einstein: the real evil comes from those who witness but do nothing, they see what's happening but they don't speak up.
It all started with 1 Samuel 8. Especially 17 & 18.
17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.
18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
"Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it." In this case, I believe those who are doomed is the rest of us. There are so many of us who are ignorant and self absorbed that we may be doomed to be the great evil that watches evil happen and does nothing.
I'm appalled by Obummer's apparent attempt to support Iran in their quest to exterminate the Jews as I am at the increasingly common instances of antisemitism here and Europe. I am also, obviously enough I hope, very supportive of Israel and its right to exist its historic homeland. But at the same time something that bothers/worries me is the effort to encourage Jews to immigrate to Israel.
I am reminded of three things. First, my mother telling me when I was young that the Jews were the canary in the coal mine and that their treatment said a lot about the state of the world's civilization. Second, of a Muslim (high level official Hamas or maybe Iran, I don't remember) who said that he welcomed Jewish immigration because then all the Jews would be in one place and easier to exterminate. And last, of a quote by an American, whose name I also can't remember, who said several years ago that the US, in many ways, was really the promised land because there is very little antisemitism here and that the US fostered a climate where they could prosper.
I don't like the idea that Jews should abandon the land that Gad gave them, but I am much more opposed to their annihilation.
I guess they have more faith in God's providence than I and I hope if they are attacked, the US (and hopefully others) will be willing to be God's hands and feet.
