Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Dear America: Quit Flipping Out About Gluten
Stupid people annoy the shit out of me. Stupid, gullible people are the worst. A few weeks ago, I bought a turkey with 'gluten free' written on the package. Of course it's gluten free, meat is not wheat. If you can't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Please wake me up when the majority return to sanity levels. As long as I encounter "Gluten Free" anywhere but the bakery aisle I know that the hysteria is still about.
At my market I've seen "Gluten Free" on Yogurt, Hot Dogs (or Frankfurters if you prefer), Orange Juice ... (but my favorite dumb label is the "May contain Peanuts", on a jar of peanut butter) Maybe this isn't funny for the between 0.5 and 1.0 percent of the population that actually have coeliac disease. But why millions of people are cutting gluten out of their diet, a necessary protein, low fat and cheap I don't understand. Power of advertising and lack of training in critical thinking, which would help some other choices those people have been making lately. CO2 is a " pollutant."
the EPA has banned argon, an elemenT used on pesticides also in welding. common sense is not common. OT a little. I saw a TV ad warning that you should not use product X if you are allergic to product X.
They banned Argon, an element found in air? Its banned as an additive in pesticides. No reason. Just because they can.
I like the commercials where drugs side effects includes an increase in whatever the drug is for. "May not be able to empty bladder completely.". the overactive bladder drug where the lady is dragged off to the bathroom by her cute little bladder.

Have you seen the Adult Wednesday Adams web show? Hilarious.
Although Mr. Herold doesn't create new cartoons anymore, you can go back through the extensive archives of Butch, the serial killer at Chopping Block for a different point of view.
http://choppingblock.keenspot.com/ Wow, what a great list of links today! I've laughed out loud 5 times already and I'm not halfway through.
re hugs now sexual assault at UVA
Sheesh ..... what's next? Handshakes? After that, will smiling at the opposite sex be considered assault? Or maybe 'leering' or 'ogling' ??? I wonder if the rule makers ever consider that those rules may one day be used against them? Like laws and regulations in the real world, I can see the day coming when there will be too many rules to keep track of and students/faculty will violate them without even knowing. It will be just another version of the 'You're inadvertently committing three felonies a day' theory. The 2nd time today something has reminded me of 'Brave New World'.
Sex will become a contract between two individuals. Procreation will take place in a laboratory/test tube. I guess evolution only goes so far and it starts reversing. re Photo: perfect for home or farm maintenance.
If I may take the liberty of disagreeing with our esteemed blogging hosts, no .... no it's not. I see no redeeming quality to that contraption unless military engines are exempt from EPA emissions regulations. Furthermore I would guess that it is in need of extensive, expensive maintenance. Somebody else can buy it. Two salient facts when you read the details:
1) you get no title, and agree that it is for off road use only 2) it is not operational I can think of better ways to spend $5,000. QUOTE: PODHERTZ: But there is a third force on college campuses. And it is this bureaucracy of counseling. In field after field, in gender, in race, in sexuality, there is now this bureaucracy that has come up to help counsel kids with their problems on college campuses. And one of the problems is, it’s a classic thing in economics: if you subsidize something, you get more of it. So if you have counseling bureaucracies, one of the things that a counselor in problems involving gender is going to find is more problems involving gender. More discrimination. More hostility. Same with race. Same with LGBT. And when you create a permanently-employed bureaucracy that is in part enriched by these things happening, because of course, then maybe you can hire more counselors and you are more central to the university’s mission, and your center gets more money, and you get raises, and all of that. I wonder if this is "incentives matter" or "Cui bono" which is college talk for the age old crime detecting technique, "follow the money" Re: Is China Doomed to Fail
I wouldn't bet against China. They have certainly engineered an economy (based somewhat loosely on capitalism) that helps a lot of people - and we can see how even in the US, prosperity can sometimes dull the senses to the value of civil liberties - but I'm also not so sanguine on the Chinese economy. Any government that can build entire cities that remain uninhabited because nobody can afford to live in them could be dangerously ignorant of the information contained in prices. As long as the people in the city are taken care of either with jobs or welfare or both, I don't expect the Chinese Communist Party will be seriously challenged (we've also seen this in the US), but if the wheels fall off, things could change rapidly. I'm gong to continue to hug my children and grandchildren, even if it means I have "sexually assaulted" them. I also know some college administrators, et alii, who I would like to ....uh..you know..

I am gonna go with Gawker this time. Nice juxtaposition with the Food Babe and the safe spaces college student.
Both are part of the same racket. [i[College Student Says You’re Just Not Smart Enough to Understand Safe Spaces[/i]
You have to be smart enough to be admitted to Brown to understand it. Re: China
If you spend time traveling in Asia, you quickly find out Chinese tourists are the most prosperous tourists. Merchants will quickly pay attention to them, but now pretty much ignore Americans. They understand our economy has collapsed and that Americans are now "Cheap Charlies." It's another stark reminder of just how much damage Obama and his party have done to our country. |
