Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

O'Malley?
Here's the response at twitter: #askMarylandaboutOmalley I found this link about O'Malley somewhere in the tweets on #askMarylandaboutOmalley. It seems like a pretty good summary:
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/416197/omalley-made-mess-maryland-richard-j-douglas He sounds like a typical demoncrat and got the typical results. ...1700 miles non-stop from New England to South America. He must know a shortcut. The air distance from Concord, NH to Paramaribo Suriname is 2762 statute miles, or 2400 nautical miles
...then I read the article. Turns out they refueled, maybe RON'd at Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Greater Antilles, then trudged on to SA.
Yes. I noted that too, Bill. Headline was misleading.
Even so, it is an impressive feat for such a small creature. Ok. Ok. So WHO doesn't get the relationship between teachers convicted of test cheating, student loans being too easy to get, AND processing student loans in a fraudulent manner?
I know one gal--got a ph.d. at the campus in the southwest. Her specialty was student loan process and financing. In her first job she instructed student loans department to "process" the student loans of 20 minority students in such a way as that the paper work would fall through the cracks. Nice--eh. Well guess what folks--there is a whole huge professional association out there who think she is just wonderful! She's helping the victims, destroying institutions that prevented them from "being equal". So my question to you is this: if that university turned her out with a phd in these particular skill sets, how many other education "professionals" have that same degree? Of course no one--no one would go after her because she is also a member of a victim class and you know which one--the one that'll force you to bake cake! what university offers a phd program in student loan financing?
Re: the teachers who ceated on test scores. What really happened here is simple: Most if not all of these teachers and administration got their jobs and no doubt their degrees largely thanks to affirmative action. They don't really know how to turn around these failing schools and failing students. Their own experience is pretty much "it doesn't matter" just fake the data and push them through with affirmative action. When you add in the very real risk that having these students fail would result in possibly firing the teachers and most certainly no bonus for the teachers than the incentive to give these students what they didn't earn is great. There are two huge failings here; the teaching and meeting the students need. But also the failure that is affirmative action. Would you go under the knife of a surgeon who got his job through affirmative action? Well, there is a good chance that someday you will. And the same blinders will be in place that allowed these teachers to pass the students through without actually teaching them anything. Once that student enters medical school the school will bend over backwards to make sure they graduate. They want and need the money, they don't need the negative attention that flunking them out would bring so they WILL graduate. Once they have become a doctor who is going to come forward and say they are incompetent? So until they have screwed up enough times such that they cannot be ignored they will keep their jobs. Essentially this is what happened to the teachers and admnistrators. Do you think for a moment that this problem has been fixed? Not on your life. What has been "fixed" is that now every teacher knows that they will need to be more careful and cover their tracks to keep from getting caught. For all the good these trials are doing we might just as well let them go back to teaching. We are treating the symptom and not the problem.
Government isn't concerned with our happiness.
They are however concerned with *theirs*. and its definitely an us vs them World. Beverly Hall functioned as the equivalent of a mafia don overseeing the chance at an education fora generation of poor black schoolchildren. In addition to the $600,000 in bonuses that were given to Hall based on test scores, over $2 million has been spent by the state of Georgia. There has been serious, serious damage done to the schoolchildren, the school system, and the city of Atlanta.
Also? Firing and fines is exactly what was offered to the people who were indicted, and 21 of them took the deal. They were given fines of a few thousand dollars and got I believe two years of probation, which because they were all first time offenders would be wiped off their record upon successful completion. The people who went to trial - with the exception of the Special Ed teacher who was acquitted - were all arrogant jerks who refused to take a deal and thought they could get away with it, despite copious evidence of fraud and racketeering. The people who got convicted deserved to be convicted. They refused to take a plea and instead demanded a trial that lasted for seven months (by the way, it costs $10,000 a day to run a court - this was told to me by a public prosecutor when he was explaining to me the reasons why he always tries to get a plea bargain rather than go to trial). "overseeing the destruction of any chance at an education for a generation of poor black schoolchildren"

"Try asking a Muslim bakery in Dearborn to bake you a gay cake. I double-dog dare ya."
Indeed. "Overreaching by prosecutors. Fired and fined would suffice. Jail should be only for the violent."
I agree in principle, prison for serious and violent crimes only. But instead of "fired and fine," I would prefer fired, serious community service, and fines. By serious public service I mean something necessary in the public domain, like roadside trash removal, but for a significant period of time. Here 5 to 10 years of service. And make it a significant burden. For full time 35+ hour per week workers, one ten hour day per week for the prescribed number of years. Doctors note required for sickness (from an approved doctor), and missed days add 5 days to sentence for the first 3 per year, then they add ten days up to the tenth day. After that it is completion of term in prison with the community services fulfilled during probation. For non-fulltime workers, the total work necessary must equal 45 hours per week, just as for fulltime workers. The missing hours would be made up with community service time. Temporary time to look for work would be available up to 2 days per week but would not change the obligation and the convict would need to make up the time missed before the end of the sentence or face increased community service days. No vacation days, no personal days, make this difficult and uncomfortable. Invite them back, we need good people to help out with making our communities look good! Rich guys don't get to pay a small fine and skate, they get screwed where it hurts the most, time. Mark Sherman re Is there E Pluribus Unum anymore?
This was an interesting read. If I understand Fred correctly, he thinks the USA will dissolve due to demographics and nobody really caring at the Federal level, thus allowing it to happen. I am not sure I agree with that, I don't believe anyone is going anywhere while the wealth transfer payments flow. However the virtue of his argument is that the trends are mostly already in place and momentum will carry us to his conclusion. Changing course will require a huge effort and there may not be enough of us up to the challenge of stopping the drift. We'll see. |
