We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Read about the good old eastern US Red-Shouldered Hawk, the lover of wetlands and swamps, at Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Like the Barred Owl who keeps the little wetland critters on their toes at night, this bird likes the kinds of places I like. Wild, wooly, and wet.
One of my favorite memories of N. Cal was sitting on a deck in the early evening, seeing a RSH being chased by a Rufous Hummingbird. When the Rufous had made his point and peeled off, the hawk tried to regain his composure sitting on top of a telephone pole. While doing so, he spotted a lizard in the tall grass. He dove for the lizard and returned to the top of the pole, at which point he began shredding the lizard. All was well with the world, so we returned to our drinks.
