Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

With regard to parental/child relationships. It appears that others are beginning to notice that we don't have anyone coming after that will be able to manage this country. I know that is a jump in the conversation--but it's early and you all know what I am talking about. Dear little perfect Suzy will never be able to manage because she has never had to be realistic with her level of achievement (or lack thereof). She, nor any group of her colleagues will be able to design anything because she does not understand what it takes at the core of each individual to sustain an ethical code, or maintain liberty. She/he can't measure up anymore, because during all their formative years they have been taught--they are already there--they are already the best. It's there turn to have a job they do not know how to do; are not capable of doing it; and don't particularly give a damn if they do that job right or not! Collaboration does not substitute for individual skills and drive.
"A big fat suprise for dietary dogma"
A good article but it was peppered with it's own dietary dogma. "Everyone agrees, however, that you should stay away from sugar." Does everyone agree? Your body doesn't agree. Your body runs on sugar just as your car runs on gasoline. Sugar keeps you warm, allows your brain to think and powers your muscles. 100% of the carbs you eat are turned into sugar. If you don't get sufficient carbs/sugar than your body can convert fat and protein into sugar. So while you don't need to consume raw sugar to get the sugar you must have you will still need sugar. Your intestines and your liver will first convert your food to glucose and than to glycogen. I am using sugar right now to think about what I'm writing and using sugar to move my muscles to actually write it. So is sugar "bad" for you? If you have a genetic disease (diabetes) sugar can be a problem because your body cannot manage it correctly. However if you do not have diabetes sugar is simply energy which your body was designed to manage efficiently. Thanks for linking the Michael Douglas column. I'm sorry I've lost track of my Jewish friends from college, that column made me want to reach out and check in with them.

Hillary!: The NYT doesn't like me! They REALLY don't like me! EU: Yup, them folks is in a heap o' trouble. re Backyard burger and wiener roasts targeted by EPA
From the article: "The agency announced that it is funding a University of California project to limit emissions resulting in grease drippings with a special tray to catch them and a "catalytic" filtration system." feeb here. Boy do you guys here at MF know how to post articles that will push my buttons. This one makes me want to scream and pull my hair out. That quote is so asinine it is jaw dropping. What possible effect could 'grease emissions' from the occasional barbeque have on either the environment or the health of the user? The answer has to be "none". This is just showing the lengths that the parasitic microbes at the EPA are going to justify their jobs. The regulators' work is never done. It's almost like they are trying to provoke an insurrection, isn't it?
The problem IS the EPA. They don't hire enough real scientists instead they hire activists. Most of their employees were activists for some "green" cause before they were hired and when they leave the EPA they will be activists for some "green" agenda again. This is government at it's stupidist. It would be like the DOJ hiring racist lawyers and allowing them to rain down racist regulations and lawsuits on American citizens and police. Or hiring union thugs to run the Dept. of Labor. Or hiring Teacher union thugs to work for the Dept of Education...
Then that also applies to DEP.
I've dealt with different ones in three separate locations of the state and they are getting more agressive and militant in telling us business-owners what is "illegal". the problem IS gvt. Local, state and feds. It is irritating to listen to people overrpraise their children, and I spent an enormous amount of energy with my sons trying to find the right mix of encouragement and accountability.
I now believe that energy was mostly wasted. Teach character as well as you can, but a lot of the personality is on hard disc before they are born. I am uncomfortable that growing evidence shows this, but I can't pretend the studies aren't there. Naval plan looks quite expensive. some are still trying to declare a peace dividend of boondoggles for everyone while others want budgets trimmed (as long as their district/state is exempt).
