Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Read Shorto's book many years ago when it came out. It is fantastic.
I second that. Very good book. Also read it some years ago. May be time to revisit it.
"A New World" (Arthur Quinn) and "A Wilderness So Immense" (John Kukla) are a pair of books a also found very good. Leader of the Free World:
I can only think of one, at the present time, Bibi. Even my WASPy kin, who are not too far removed from the green and sceptered isle, admit it, albeit with much face palming and egadding. But the Anglosphere is represented in the persons, of Harper and Abbott. The DHS is worried about "sovereign citizens"! Really?
This is what the DHS has devolved to under Obama. $60 billion a year, thousands of travelers luggage stolen by DHS agents and zero terror attacks prevented by DHS and now we find out that their focused like a laser on "sovereign citizens". Not the terrorists that burned Ferguson. Not the people shooting cops. Not the 3000 deaths every year from illegal aliens. No, it's the "sovereign citizens" who we are tracking. What a contrived distraction... Mark Steyn's column was brilliant, as all ways, but he left out a few things.
For example, Obummer kept reform minded Muslims out of his summit (http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/obama-kept-reform-muslims-out-of-summit-on-extremism/article/2560525). He has refused to support Egypt's president el Sisi and Jordan's king Abdullah in their battle with ISIS. As Steyn says, if Obummer were on the other side, what would he do differently? Kristoff: A self-hating raaaaacist/misgynist/otherphobe is telling us what to think?
DHS: Looked for and found a non-problematic "problem". Those are so easy to deal with, rather than real dangers and problems. Recently you published a picture of your office and mentioned about Yankeeland culture. I am a Canadian and really enjoy your blog. I also admire Classic Liberal ideals often reflected in New England culture. Where would you say would be a good place to visit that would best demonstrate this. A place in New England with "Yankkeeland culture, history, architecture and hopefully good food? I think it would be fun to visit. If George Washington slept there may I could too.
#4 Phil Taylor (Link) on 2015-02-22 17:25 (Reply) Thank you so much fo doing so. Places where the locals might reflect classic liberal ideals. Places with a little history and architecture. This may be a tough question because "Yankeeland culture may be a state of mind more than an actual place.
I am thinking that the coast is going to be generally better for history, food, and architecture. I live inland in NH, which has little coastline, so it pains me to say that.
OTOH, the Yankeeland culture isn't going to show up so much among the current citizens of Salem, Boston, Plymouth, Providence, New Haven, etc. And Western MA is right out, unfortunately. Mt Washington Hotel and surrounding, maybe. Portland. Mystic. Route 13 from MA to NH. Fun question. I was thinking the same about Boston. Mt Washinton hotel. Portland. Mystic. Route 13 from MA to NH. sounds really interesting. I will research that as well as Manchester by the Sea, or Ipswich, Essex, Nahant, Marblehead, Old Orchard Beach. Peabody, Salem, and Kittery, Me.
These places sound great! Thank you for taking the time to respond Assisantant Village Idiot and Gone with the wind. I appreciate it. It depends. Plymouth has a lot of history but is a little touristy. Boston is a good choice, walk the freedom trail and vist the old North Church, climb to the top of bunker hill tower, visit Old Ironsides in the Boston Navy Yard all sites along the trail, so many things to see in Boston. For old towns that haven't changed a lot try Manchester by the Sea, or Ipswich, Essex, Nahant, Marblehead, Old Orchard Beach. Or drive old rte 114 from Peabody to New Hampshire, Or drive old rte 1A (changes to rte 1) from Salem, Ma to Kittery, Me. Get a guide book to the covered bridges in New England and just finding them will take you down backroads and hidden places. Go to any of the many summer resort places in NH during the season just for the fun of it.
It depends on what you like. I can't disagree with any of that. If you say what you are looking for, we may be able to do even better. I think you must either take a buffet approach and drive around, or pick one place and burrow in, recognising that you are missing the broad but gaining some depth. If the latter, there are a few dozen places that would serve. I think it was Gringo who suggested Sturbridge. That could put you in good distance for the Norman Rockwell museum. He was famous for expressing Americana, and that is a reasonable first approximation. But that is even more distilled as a Smalltown Newenglandiana, and would give you easy access to further material after you got home, to fill in the gaps of what you saw.
On this basis, I would say Sturbridge, even though Western MA is an insane region of people who are experts on the nuances of intersectionality. Even waitresses at small diners are worrisome in that region. Yet you might, if you proceed with caution, do well there. Looking forward to CT-biased Bird Dog's take here. WOW! By george I think Assistant Village Idiot may have got it. I am a huge Normal Rockwell Fan. Going to that Museum was on my "to do" list anyway. My favourite paintings are "The Four Freedoms." Norman Rockwell painted America not as it is, but how Americans think of themselves and how much of the world still thinks of America dispite media to the contrary. If Sturbridge will make the visit even more worthwhile then that is a good first trip to do. Then the other suggestions may be for another trip when the weather improves. I am about a 9 hour drive from there so this is very do-able. Intersectionality is a culture I do not have to deal with thankfully, but it would be interesting to see it in action. I can't thank the bloggers enough who responded. Will look into all these great suggestions.
