We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Henryk Gorecki's Third Symphony, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (1976). Mainly Polish laments, but using medieval musical modes. Gorecki's music had been more modern (ie, atonal and unlistenable) before this. This recording is with the amazing Dawn Upshaw. For me, it took three or four listenings and I liked it better each time. Deeply moving piece, in my opinion.
Gorecki insisted that this 55-minute piece, in 3 movements, was not about the holocaust but simply about sorrow in general. However, many feel otherwise, anyway - including the person who put together this visual accompaniment which is, of course, disturbing, but also distracting from the music.
Though the symphony doesn't have a direct connection to the Holocaust, the link is understandable, given its allusions to the tragic events in the history of Poland.
The second movement includes a prayer to the Virgin Mary which was written on the wall of her cell in a Gestapo prison by Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna in 1944:
"O Mamo nie płacz nie! Niebios Przeczysta Królowo Ty zawsze wspieraj mnie."
("Oh Mama do not cry! Immaculate Queen of Heaven support me always.")
When are you going to get over it? The "holocaust" is a past event? NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN that is for certain. BUT, IT IS NOT THE ONLY EVENT IN HISTORY during these past 70 years. Other events have had as great or greater impact on innocent lives. The idea of genocide is evil. Where were you when Srebenicia was going down? Where are you today, today when the Kurds are getting whacked again? Do you not understand that the Jewish people are not the only ones who have been abused? Shucks BD--it could even be said that the Mexican people of today are being seriously abused by the drug gangs? The message you are devoting yourself to has only one victim--but, there are many, many other groups out there that get victimize, brutalized every day of a century. When you and other good "Christians" like you understand that then maybe--maybe we can move on to a system of justice that embraces all equally. Not until.
I forgot to add: when you give an entire race of people a "go free and do as you please" pass--then there are thousands of other victims. People who will be stolen from, people who will be bullied, people who will have their lives destroyed by members of a "go free" class.
We must never--ever allow ALL individuals of a particular group to be above the law. Not like we have done for this group in the past 70 years. NEVER AGAIN should individuals of this group be free to do any damn thing they want because their grandparents suffered brutally in a World War. WORLD means many people of different groups helped to create that war. Some of them from your very own "special group" That is what young people are rebelling against!
Someone sure got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
Tell me, did those two rants make you feel much better?
"We must never--ever allow ALL individuals of a particular group to be above the law. Not like we have done for this group in the past 70 years. NEVER AGAIN should individuals of this group be free to do any damn thing they want because their grandparents suffered brutally in a World War."
Gee, just what particular "group" could you mean, I wonder?
