We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
This is a great talk! We control more of our lives than we're willing to admit but part of that control is that we control how we react to not only the things we can control but also the things we cannot.
A lot of people don't realize how empowering that is that you are responsible for your life. The people (mostly who are doing well in their life) who tell those who are not that they aren't responsible for their plight are doing the most destructive thing they can do to those people. It doesn't relieve them of pain or guilt or whatever they may intend. Instead it relieves them of the power to do something about where they are in their life. And that is the story of the welfare state.
