Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I loved PJ O'Rourke's Eat The Rich. Only slightly dated now. It is accessible to bright highschoolers, and I have given it as a graduation gift.
Absolutely agree, but anything by P.J. O'Rourke is going to be not only informative but hilarious. "Eat the Rich" was good - but "Parliament of Whores" was better. Read both!
Feminist punished for sympathy for men was quite an interesting video. Thank you for posting it.
NJ has insane laws. I trust the NRA will join me in not endorsing Chris Christie, though it's likely not his fault.

Makes one wonder for whom the teacher voted all these years. If voted for the people who made the law and enforced the law, then, yes, it should be enforced on him, too. He wished for it, wanted it, willed it, voted for it, then wants an exception. That undermines democracy. If he voted for candidates who promised year after year to abolish NJ’s insane laws, but did nothing, then he’s a Republican, as the Republicans’ behavior at the federal level amply demonstrates. I am not a fan of Governor Kitzhaber but he is better then most of the far left politicians in the state. His resignation will be followed by worse lefties and worse laws and policies being passed. Oregon's lefties are jealous of California's repressive taxes and will inexorably work to squeeze the last dollar from their citizens to further their green objectives and illegal alien pandering.

I also like The People's Cube's (http://thepeoplescube.com/) "Je suis random folk in a deli". Re: flintlock possession. I guess it doesn't pay to be honest. Per Wikipedia, Alaska has 2.7 gun murders/thousand (57.8% gun ownership), while NJ has 2.8 gun murders/thousand (12.3% gun ownership). Of course other states like TX don't make as good a case. Simply put, other factors outside draconian gun laws drive murder by gun rates.
Re: flintlock possession
A few thoughts spring to mind: 1. What sort of idiot would write and pass such a law? followed closely by 2. What sort of idiot would live in such a state? but legal curiosities spring up (probably because I'm not a lawyer and can't be expected to understand the nuances of such things. I'm not a fan of most Federal laws but: 3. I thought if a local law conflicts with a Federal law, the Federal law takes precedence. (I guess that doesn't apply in the case of marijuana or firearms laws). 4. What part of "shall not be infringed" is supported by the NJ law? 5. For that matter, what part of the Second Amendment is supported by the NJ law? 6. If the Feds can have prosecutorial discretion with regards to immigration law, voter intimidation laws, for example, why does a prosecutor feel the need to spend tax money on this issue? Maybe that is answered by #1 and #2. 7. What will Gov. Christie do about this? WRT Mark's comment above, I refer you to this Afterburner video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pELwCqz2JfE Missed one
